Howard Alden and Ken Peplowski's new cd is called "Pow Wow". It's great to
hear the balance and interplay these two are able to achieve. In terms of
comping Alden is on a very refined level. Howard's Django-esque chops are
very much in evidence. He has great rapport with Peplowski and the two
achieve a lot of amazing little miracles of spontaneity as if by accident.
The approach, while traditional, achieves a great sophistication free of
any overly nostalgic, retro overtones. This is due in part to the quality of
the material. The set list includes Strayhorn, Duke, Porter, Bill Evans
[Very Early], Bud Powell and a couple things by Joe Puma. ....joe
