newsgroups as well. Usually when this sort of thing happens it is due
to a snafu with Google Groups (since most Usenet posters seem to use it).

I notice also that all posts over the past short while are coming from
people who use dedicated newsreaders. Even more rationale for your
assumption.

Google is not propagating Google Groups posts to Usenet, for some
reason. Unless you're reading on GG, you won't see this message.

Yep. I'd guess that the folks at Google have no reason to play nice and
forward messages posted on Google Groups to usenet and lots of reason not
to. I guess they waited until there were enough people posting through GG
that the squawk wouldn't be loud enough to bother them.

is this right? I figured this was a glitch that would get sorted out,
and I can't find any official confirmation that google stopped
forwarding messages to usenet. (on google, anyway!)

Dunno. I'm just guessing. But from what I'm reading about social media, I'd
imagine that Google is terrified of being left in the dust and depserate to
leverage everything they've got.

Well, times change. And maybe usenet's past its sell-by date. I'm more than
a bit of a fuddy-duddy: the idea of putting all one's data in the cloud
(e.g. gmail, iPhone) strikes me as nuts . And letting Google or Apple or
Facebook or Twitter know that much about you seems insane beyond words. The
Mac-ophiles spent the last 20 years screaming how evil M$ was, and then run
like lambs to the Facebook slaughter. I don't get it.

There are other things in life besides usenet and social media, so we'll all
survive. Even me.

Well, Google has clearly not much cared about the Usenet ecosystem
outside of its own sandbox. Google's not-so-hidden goal is to own all
the information in the world- not sharing it is one way to accomplish
that!

I'll miss Usenet if/when it finally does die, which is the only "social
media" thing I engage in on the Internet. And Usenet will die sooner or
later because it is not a ready profit center, unlike Web based media
which can be easily monetized. I don't think it's too far a stretch to
say that Usenet is the last bastion of democracy and freedom on the
Interwebs- and unfortunately for us, democracy and freedom are
diametrically opposed to multibillion dollar transnational infotainment
capitalisms like Google.

You guys killing all your Google accounts my March 1 when the new Google
anti-privacy policies go into effect? I am probably doing it and also
no longer using Google as my search engine of choice. And I am sure
they will really notice and reconsider the error of their ways!
