I was watching a guy on Jools 'Later' playing a Tele with a Bigsby and
thinking is there a Tele with a standard Strat trem fitted. There is but
it's a Deluxe which loses some of the 'Teleness' so I was thinking if a more
standard Tele is fitted with a Strat trem, arm and belly contours, upper
cutaway, 'plateless' contoured neck joint, extended fingerboard for extra
frets, 'swimming bath' rout for any size/combination/postion of pickups,
extended pickguard to reach the trem bridge etc. it would make an
interesting project.

I was looking at aftermarket bodies but probably easier to do the pickup
rout, upper cutaway and the plateless neck joint on a body blank. I could
also use a compression spring from the rear rather than routing for both
conventional springs and pickups in the same body position. I'll probably do
a photo montage to see how good/bad it might look.

I wonder if it would still sound like a Tele once you route it for the
tremolo.

I think the ashtray bridge is the largest single factor in the tele
sound.

I agree. I'd be willing to bet that a tele routed for a strat trem
would be a tele in shape only.

Alledgedly, Seymour Duncan has replicated those characteristics in a
standalone bridge pickup. One of the Hellecasters, John Joergenson, uses
one in his signature Strat.

But what would the point of it be? Contours, cutaways and trem like a
Strat. What's left of the Tele? That's a Strat! Try the Seymour Duncan
Strat replacement bridge pickup that (supposedly) sounds like a Tele
bridge pickup.

A Tele doesn't even sound like a Tele if you put a Bigsby on it, IMHO.

This is what it's like working by committee: whatever idea you come up
with, someone will talk you out of.

Somebody on another NG claims to have done it already in a custom guitar. I
haven't seen pics yet to judge but he says my description is very close.

But I ask again: What's the point? What Tele feature is it this design is
supposed to retain?

Some say so, some say nay. I've got 3 sorts, 1 genuine ashtray, 1 brass
'ashtray' bridge-strung copy and one fixed bridge with piezo saddles copy
and they all sound much more Tele-like than any of my Strats and
Stratalikes. They don't have trem routes though, and I'm intending to route
toward the end-pin for a compression spring.

Yes, changing the bridge can significantly change the sound,
especially if you go to a trem. But the issue shouldn't be whether it
sounds like a Tele or sounds like a Strat, but whether it sounds
good. I have an alder Tele with the standard bridge and
minihumbuckers. It sounds great. I have an ash Tele with P-90s and a
trem. It sounds great, too. I don't even use the trem on this
guitar, but I like the sound it imparts. That's all that matters.
Don't be afraid to try something new. Where's the rule that says you
alter the formulas only at your peril?

Neck and headstock.

So you could just bolt a tele neck onto a strat body and be done with it...

(Presumably, this has been done before.)

Hey! I thought that I was the only one who felt that way.

I don't think Tele and Strat necks and neck pockets are compatible... So,
what he needs is really a Tele neck with a Strat neck heel---call Warmoth!

But they each exist in a context. The Strat headstcok with a Strat shaped
body etc. A Tele headstock on a Strat body would just look weird, I think.
Maybe it would look good after a while, when I got used to it, though.

I never liked it. It always struck me as too large. I can't justify it
-- just a personal thing.

The strat neck has rounded corners, so it will fit on a tele, but
there will be some small gaps visible. A tele neck will fit on a strat
with some sanding..

There are those who will attach a Mustang body to a Chevy El Camino
bed! Sheesh!

Or a GMC front with a Ford bed.

There is a trem bridge for Tele's available from Glendale Guitars
called the Chime Master. I've never played it on a Tele, but it
sounded great on one of our guitars and I'm told by a couple other
builders that it works really well on a Tele. Here's a link to the
Chime Master page on their site.

http://www.glendaleguitars.com/trem%20blocks.htm

The only downsides are that its hard to get and expensive. But I'd be
happy to vouch for the quality.

I've got a Strat with a Glendale Chimemaster bridge. It introduces a
nice twanginesss to the Strat. You can check it out here:

A Tele with a trem, keeping all the bits *I* like and think are
characteristic of a Tele, but adding any modern conveniences from Strat or
other guitars *I* don't think detract from it looking like a Tele.

Burt that would be a Strat, in fact I know somebody who's done that and it
sounds pretty good, but it still looks like a Strat.

This is really intriguing, but, unless I'm mistaken, it looks like the
current tremolos for sale are designed for a Strat.
