I noticed they indicate the top is cedar. Is that unusual for an archtop?
(I would have to agree that they certainly look like Eastmans in many
respects.) Looks like they know how to do a nice sunburst.

yeah cedar top is odd choice. I know cedar is used with classical
guitars instead of spruce sometime but I never seen it on an archtop.

It is used sometimes on archtops and I even recall a D'angelico Stlye A
with a cedar top that was in for refinish when I was around Bill Barker.

Several modern luthiers use it also. From Jimmy Foster's website:

"Western Red Cedar has recently been used as a top wood for flattop
guitars. I also really like the way it sounds on a smaller bodied 15"
wide archtops. Western Cedar is a soft wood that produces a warm fat
tone when played acoustically. Tight grained pieces are easy to locate
and are much less costly than any of the spruce varieties. I use
Western Red Cedar on my 15" and 17" St. Charles Avenue models. This
wood coupled with a built-in pickup produces a great sound
electronically as well as acoustically. The coloration is reddish or
dark brown in appearance and works well with a dark sunburst finish.
For those who are skeptical about Western Red Cedar, I assure you that
this is a wonderful sounding tone wood with great response."

Check out his comleted listing. Not one sold! I like the Pisano
looking one that is a 17 inch with a floater.

From Jimmy Foster, I would buy one in a second (if I had that kind of
spare change). But a no-name Ebay listing out of China? Er, someone
else please go first and let us know what they sound like....

that pisano model had a spliced neck. I seriously doubt an eastman
clone with a spliced neck is using western cedar wood. Probably a
cheap plywood...

Since the seller is in China, a likely explanation could be that he
somehow got some guitars from the Eastman workshop before the Eastman
logo was inlayed on them, no? And the cedar top thing is probably just
a wrong translation of the Chinese word for "spruce" - the seller
doesn't seem to be very good in English.

Eastman doesn't make spliced necks.

I think your right re the plywood. If you look closely at the f hole in the
picture, it looks like you can see the layers in the top.

i notice he took down the picture of the sunburst model that didn't
have the black paint over the neck splice...

I can't see the splice. How far down from the dark wood overlay is it?
