It's always interesting to me to hear from the various working musicians
here regarding their plans for New Year's Eve. Since the economy is still in
recession the gig scene is not as robust as it was a few years ago. Still,
I'm sure a lot of people are working and it's helpful in terms of better
understanding the marketplace to hear some of the details.

So where will you be playing? How many people on the job? What are the
hours? etc.?

Happy New Year!!! ..................joe

p.s. I will be performing with an eight piece group at The Red Lion Inn in
Stockbridge Mass. from 8:30 to 12:30. This band has played NYE there for
several years. It's beginning to look like the sort of gig that we will have
until hell freezes over or we all die; whichever comes first. They are
paying us more than last year, too.

last year I had a really good payday music directing a smooth jazz
thing. this year, I'm working my trio. it's a "first night"
celebration, here in st petersburg. unfortunately I believe it's an
alcohol free event- I'll have to bring a flask. they have venues set
up all over town and people go to and from and check out music and
art, etc.... they have my trio in a church. hmmm maybe i should
leave the flask in the car! I'm happy to do it, I'm doing three sets
between 7 and 11, but I'm bummed that the pay is not what I'm
accustomed to for NYE. I used to make half my yearly income in
december, but this year has been pretty bleak in that regard.

I almost forgot. I also have a two hour solo gig at a nursing home during
the afternoon that day. .....joe

It's good to hear that you are working. At least you won't have to worry
about snowstorms and freezing cold in St. Petersburg! We have a lot of those
first night events up here too. I've played a few of them. They are family
friendly events with magicians, clowns, etc. and no alcohol. They hire lots
and lots of bands too in a variety of venues. Unfortunately the weather can
be brutal and this discourages people from walking from one event to the
next. .....joe

I'm playing at a retirement center here in Chicago; piano, guitar,
bass, drums, and singer; then at a private party with another group:
sax, trumpet, poiano (maybe), guitar, drums, bass. Both pay pretty
well, so I hope to be let back into the house and not have to sleep in
the garage with Lucy the possum.....again.

Wow! That's double duty!

NYE is one of those nights that my wife and I have never really spent
together in terms of the "auld lang syne" routine. But I'll be home when
it's all over so she's fine with it.

Happy New Year to you and your family; Lucy too!! .....joe

Early cocktail-hour duo set (8-9:30) with a trumpet, before the place kicks
into party mode with a pop cover band.

Here in Retirement Central, New Year's gigs typically run 6-8 PM or
7-9PM. I did one a few years ago that was to run 9-1, but by five
minutes after midnite, the band was alone, so we went home :-)

I played with a Singer who plays Drums a couple of months ago so.....
I now have a NYE gig in Snottsdale with Me, Sax, Bass, Drums and the
Singer.
I wanted to play Bass instead (Lots of Bass players here who do
classic rock and since they can play "Moondance" they think they know
2000 standards LOL) but he likes me on Guitar. I'm a little concerned
about the Bassist but whaddya gonna do? (I don't know the other
members of the band)

So after spending a week learning Tunes Not In My Book (TNIB).
I call said singer and he says the gig is off.
They kept asking for Swing????? (Cause as we all know Sinatra didn't
ever "SWING")
I noticed he didn't call me and waited for me to call him so I guess
that's it for him.
I learned to play "The Look of love" in any key though so it wasn't a
complete bust.
Anyway If you hear of any New Years Eve gigs in any style Jazz, Swing,
Country, 60's and 70's Rock or Polka Band.
Please call anyone but me. ;-)

I'll be with the HORDE!
