I have the classic studio stuff, including New Rising Sun, already;
but I was thinking of DL'ing the Monterey and the Berkeley sets, which
I had spread out over several LPs. There is a nice 3CD box on emusic
set that has some miscellenous cuts like the studio version of Star
Spangled Banner that was on the LP Rainbow Bridge.
You have to look at both "artist: Jimi Hendrix" as well as "artist:
Jimi Hendrix Experience."
anyone have any favorite live recording recommendations? I only have
the studio stuff
Hendrix was the first guitarist that blew my mind, and i was surprised
to hear something new that i hadn't heard of his before that would be
this good and give me the same chills at 46 that i got at 15 or 16,
but check this rare live jam:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wLwMWuE-80
Sure there's 95% chaff in this jam but i like its vibe and there's 2%
super-cool and 3% whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! And while it seems to
fade at the worst possible time, that end solo, from 8:18 or so until
the fade--->OMFG! someone let Godzilla outta the cage, and he ain't
happy ! And it's funny in that Butterfield's kind of ineptly tooting
away and suddenly Godzilla annihilates everything in its path with a
cosmic blast of electric love!
Nice early solos here by Hendrix too, with all those over-bends and
intense phrasing right at the smear where transcription's start to
bottom out under the weight of accuracy vs readability. While i
eventually had to move on to other things besides Hendrix, as i really
couldn't be happy with just that, he still sounds fresh and dangerous
to these ears even today .
The Live at Winterland is very good. But I didn't recall seeing it on
emusic last night.
The obvious "Live at the Fillmore" set is the classic "Band of
Gypsies" album with extra tunes. That's a must have and is on
emusic. Two bad it's 24 downloads. Machine Gun on that has some
screaming Jimi playing.

Really? That's the same recording as Band of Gypsys?
I second Live at Winterland and Band of Gypsys (or, indeed, Live at the
Fillmore)

I'm pretty sure that's how they packaged the Band of Gypsies stuff on
CD.
IIRC you're right. I'm going to download it as soon as my downloads
refresh. I wish I had a utility that would replace Buddy Miles with
Mitch Mitchell.
Yeah, Mitch was a blast. But what can you do. Luckily Mitch is on
most Hendrix.

I must have played band of gypsies a million times as an adolescent. My
younger sisters stole the LP from me when I went to college. I bought the CD a
few years ago, but it now sounds out of tune to my ears and I have difficulty
listening to it. Hendrix sounds great, his guitar playing is incredible,
but it sounds like the bass was slightly out of tune, and buddy Miles's vocals
sound off on "them changes". It's too bad, because the groove is as deep as
Hendrix got. Incidentally, I read an interview where CHristian McBride lists
this aas one of his favorite recordings.

I just had a listen (It's Live at the Fillmore East, BTW); I can't be sure
as my Band of Gypsys CD is in the car, but I don't think any of the
Fillmore East tracks are the same performances as the corresponding songs
on Band of Gypsys. It's the Band of Gypsys, all right, but the Band of
Gypsys album itself is not on Fillmore East.
Looks like Greger's right on the ball. Pretty annoying they split
these up like this.
I kinda prefer it this way. The Album Band of Gypsys is the album Hendrix
wanted, it should be left alone. If Experience Hendrix released a multi
volume Fillmore East with BoG embedded, they run the risk of Fillmore
East, with its padded track listing, replacing BoG.
As it is now, Fillmore East is a complement to BoG, something for the
fans and collectors.
One of my first attempts at a written transcription was the first few
choruses of Jimi's masterful version of 'Red House' at San Diego that
was on the 'Hendrix in the West' compilation and it sure tested my
skills.
The last time I got that same chill from his playing was coming across
this rare film clip from Newport Pop (especially from around
1:30-2:45). Stratospheric stuff!:
In fact, this guy's whole channel is a real labour of love. He's taken
lots of silent Hendrix footage then sourced and resynched the relevant
audio from the best possible sources:
have you guys heard: http://www.philipsayce.com/
Those people just won't stop climbing up in the front. Thanks Paul.
That was cool.
hey i agree
i LoVe Buddy's Philly sound ,especially on his own
never cared much for his vocal interjections though-----but hell,
that's the same for Tony Williams too!
so there you go
anyway, Mitchell and Miles........apples and onions, at the very least
and i like both!
labor of love indeed!
mixed results of course
but hey man, a biGhat's off, and i'm presently digging into that
