Well, apart from the notoriety of being used to kill and wound more than
forty people at Fort Hood, I don't think a lot of it. It shoots a .22"
round at a little over 2200 fps - if you can get them. The ammunition
reputed to defeat body armor isn't for sale to civilians in the US, and
what you can get costs at least $2 per round.

Struck out again, Lenny.

I don't care for a double-action-only pistol. Either the Glock Safe Action
or the classic single-action 1911 is much easier to sustain over a
langourous afternoon at the range, and both offer a consistent trigger pull
from first shot to last.

Also, as noted, the 5.57 round isn't a common one. I prefer something
that's available at any ol' Wal-Mart - 9mm or preferably .45 ACP.

The FN offering is hardly the ne plus ultra of handguns.

It is an interesting weapon. 20 rounds could be useful for military
purposes. If you also have a P-90 (not the pickup), it would be good to be
able to use the same rounds.

It is advertised as a personal defense weapon. I would like something in a
larger caliber. This has sufficient velocity so an armor piercing round
could go through the attacker, the wall behind and into your neighbor.
Perhaps they have a hollow point frangible round that would make more sense.
Maybe if you are worried that the burglar is wearing body armor, this could
be useful if you can get the steel tipped rounds.

Also, it has no single action capability (hammer hidden?). It is harder to
get good accuracy with the double action. The second round would be single
action, but that's an awkward compromise. A lot of ifs.

For home defense, a hollow point 9mm, 10mm or .45 would be a better choice
IMHO.

One of Fabrique Nationale better weapons. Sure a lot of Armed Forces round
the worls use it, i think just behind the AK-47.

Still give me a shoutgun for close in home defense.

At pistol velocities, even 2k fps, a larger diameter round is what I
prefer. However, the US has been sending its soldiers to war equipped
with .22 cal rifles for many decades now.

Let me make clear that I'm by no means anti-gun
but in the realm of personal defense 99% of all
such encounters last less than 10 seconds and
expend no more than 3 rounds *total*. Carrying 20
rounds on one's hip concealed all day just doesn't
work and that gun is a bitch to conceal. If you
need more than a 5 shot .38 snubby you've let your
mouth write a check your ass can't cash anyway.

If someone is trying to kill you, you don't have time to wait for the
police to arrive. By the time they can arrive, you will be dead, and
the police can arrest your murderer. That doesn't do you a lot of good.

Yehbutyehbutyehbut...how many of you guys have actually had to fire a
single shot in anger - or self defence?

(Armed forces personnel excepted, of course).

Is the world outside your front door really that dangerous? I've spent

ever there was a soft target, I'm a walking one.

One town over, an off duty cop was showing his laser sight off to one
of his buddies and killed a kid. I guess states rights and all that,
but here in the heavily populated east coast, in the country's safest
major city (New York, that is), "home defence" causes more accidental
deaths.

Be clear, I'm not interested in another gun debate, but a was
interested to know if poeple who owned them had actually had a reason

endemic but it's usually baddie-on baddie crime. You're much more
likely to hear gunshots over here on misty mornings in the countryside

Knife crime, though, is slightly more worrying - there's a lot of kids
out there carrying knives for 'self defence', and that's a worrying
slide towards the American attitude towards guns, and knives seem to
be just as effective at offing people as pistols.

Well, I protect myself by living in an area with such a low crime rate
that I don't really think much about having to protect myself. That

A lot of people in the US carry knives, mostly as a tool. I carry a pocket
knife (except at work where it is not allowed) because it is useful for
opening boxes and cutting up recycled cardboard and all that. When I was a
kid, I was required to bring a pen knife to school to sharpen pencils. Try
that today.

It turns out each state has different laws about what size knife can be
carried. In Minnesota a lockback pocket knife has to be less than a 2 1/2"
blade. Non-hidden knives I think can 5 1/2" I think. I read that Texas has
a different restriction, however. The blade can be no longer than 68 1/2".
;>) Which means I can wear my Katana to the next get together.

I agree with you that a knife will kill almost as well as a gun. A baseball
(or Cricket) bat would also do nicely. I've heard of screwdrivers, chains,
sharpened bicycle spokes and all sorts of things being used as weapons. I
suspect people are the problem.

I think that most people need to be trained in some basic things. How to
drive a car safely, how to ride a motorcycle safely, how to use a gun
safely, how to use power tools safely, how to keep from asphyxiating
yourself, how to put out a grease fire, how to do cpr, how to keep from
accidentally poisoning yourself, how to keep from electrocuting yourself,
how to use a knife or chisel safely, how to use a ladder safely and numerous
other things, almost none of which are taught in school. So we have a lot
of lucky people out there.

As for guns, I feel that it would be useful for even anti-gun people to know
how to pick up a gun and make it safe, so that they can fulfill their desire
to not have people injured by guns. Or so that if they find a gun on the
street, they can control the gun and calmly call 911 and have the gun
removed rather than behave in some ineffective manner.

My wife is mostly anti-gun. Meaning she wishes that there were not so many
guns around, etc. When we had an escaped convict in the neighborhood
breaking into houses and kidnapping people. She asked me to leave a loaded
pistol with her (and our young children) when I went to work. She is
actually a good shot and would not have hesitated shooting someone
physically breaking into the house under those circumstances. Eventually
the convict was caught, but he had been not too many blocks away.

So my point is that a gun is a tool and it is useful to know how to use
tools IMHO.

It is very interesting how different people view this subject. FWIW,
I know people who consider it to be *immoral* to go unarmed, because
then you're expecting somebody else to take care it for you. Seems
somewhat self-righteous to me, but whatever gets 'em through the day.

Well, you just *can't* expect Big Brother to be
proactive about protecting you, can you? Is it
"OK" to let yourself get taken out of your wife

No, you can't. But I don't have the attention span for that
sorta thing. Look, violent death is remarkably less probable
than lots of other things. And I've bulls**t my way out
of more tight spots than I care to reveal.

I'd probably rely on my wife and kids to settle the score. I DoGAF, but
only about controlling the outcome. I wouldn't enter into a fair fight
for anybody's money. See "Charlie Varrick" for details. Fair fights are
for stupid people.

When you post this ( and I am taking liberties I hope I'll be forgiven
for, because I'm only drawing on an image to make a point ) , I
visualize the character from Ren and Stimpy of George Liquor,
veins bulging.

Please understand. My earliest musical career was in places where
you were fairly likely *to* get shot, compared to the average citizen's
experience. Didn't happen often, but a handful of times were sufficient
to greatly exceed typical probabilities.

I adapted more appropriate strategies. Mainly because I
couldn't afford a damned gun. I had to skip eating for
a day to buy strings, yo.

I like guns. But it hasn't exactly been a priority. I can smell the
"Gimme Three Steps" moment *well* in excess of it coming on. Drawing
on Sun Tzu, the best place to be when a blow comes is somewhere else.

I'm a primate; a monkey. That's my evolutionary heritage. Monkeys
hightail it out of there. I haven't had to execute the manuever very
often. Only when I knew reason wasn't gonna work any more. it worked
*much* better than it should have. The secret is eye contact. Lock and
*sell*.

Now, if you're gonna tell me that you're better off blazing away
than GTFOut of there, I'm listening. The Q for that is pretty damned
narrow, and the *first* thing I know about it is I am out of my depth.

And since we're here, I think the finest piece of work I ever did was
talking the guitar player out of going to get his damned .357 one
night when the owner wasn't going to pay us. Nobody got hurt. We got
paid. The owner wasn't up to a few paltry syllogisms.

So go Alamo all you want to. I won't be there. I might be up on the
ridge behind you, sighting in. But it depends.

Sorry Les, it isn't about your wife and kids
"settling the score", it's about you making sure
you're still around to "be there". If it means
recognizing a "Gimme Three Steps" moment before it
happens or removing yourself before shit goes

have in your trick bag. Some day you may not have

I believe another part of that equation is that I would rather not
risk injuring or killing another person because I want to keep a gun
around all the time because of a very small chance something nasty
would happen that I could not handle without a gun.

If these people, who should have a lot of training on handling guns,
have accidents, I believe the odds of having an accident is far more
likely than the need for a gun to defend myself.

Anyone who doesn't feel the need to carry a gun at all times doesn't
"give a fuck" about his family? That's over the top even for a gun
discussion.
Oh, and anyone who isn't a cop and has managed to get him or herself
into five situations where a gun was necessary probably could do with
some lifestyle changes, thereby making the gun alot less "necessary".
I don't mind people owning guns, they are going to wether I do or not.
I just don't think they should be able to buy mass amounts of them for
resale at gun flea-markets, and I don't care to have one on my person
all the time. I don't think that makes me "unprepared" or careless
about my family. It just makes me a normal person who doesn't walk

Holy Cow! You hit the nail on the head, Larry.

That's exactly what I did. From growing up in Eastern Kentucky to
moving to the Hillbilly slums of Indianapolis and Richmond, Indiana
where I always felt I had to be alert. I would walk into a bar and
always notice where all the exits were and try my best to make sure my
back was against the wall.

Until I moved to Michigan, I never new that folks could consistently
get together and drink beer and never have a fight break out. Now I
live in a quite peaceful place out in the country and the closest
think I have seen to a fight the last 30 years is either on TV or a
harmless shoving match on the basketball court.

No clue? Reread my post. I did not say one shouldn't have a gun for
home protection. I was addressing those who feel the need to carry one
all the time while out of the house, and even then I understand there
are exceptions. Off duty cops, somebody leaving a late shift in an
unsafe part of town, etc... But strapping on a gun to go down to Home
Depot or your kid's soccer game on a Saturday afternoon? Just weird.
May nobody decide to kick down your door while you're at home, Steve.
But if it happens five times you must live in the wrong neighborhood.

a gun. Or use one. And I hope to God I'm never in a situation where I wish
I had one. But... even in the 'burbs," bad things are happening these days.
People are homeless. People are hungry. People are out of work. The world
is going mad. Shootings in Orlando, Texas, Portland.

So for the first time in a long time, I don't feel as safe as I used to.
Even here in the burbs... homes are being broken into daily. We bit the
bullet, we installed a complete alarm system. Every window, every door.
Glass shatter detectors, motion detectors, monitored system, hooked in
wirelessly so that if the phone lines are cut, the alarm goes off anyway.
And that's as far as I will go. Beyond that... if it came to having to live
in a world where the only way to survive was by carrying a gun, I'm not so
sure it's a world I would want to have any part of anyway. I try to take
precautions, but at a certain point, you have to have faith that it'll all
be okay.

My point is that saying that doesn't insult all men, and calling
someone a pussy doesn't insult all women. As a matter of fact, this
whole thread has certain aspects of guys comparing the sizes of their
penises. But that's not an insult to all men.

Some people just need to lighten up.

In fact, quite a while back we had a wonderful human being by the name
of Elizabeth Papapetrou participating on this forum.

She was a terrific person, knowledgable about technical issues, was
writing for AG Magazin,e and involved in many aspects of the music
business (talented singer-songwriter as one)...

...I remember quite well the several times she just flat out posted
that "we" (the man-folk here) needed to stop waving our dicks around.

Period.

Sadly, Elizabeth passed away a number of years ago.

I miss her.

...oh, and boys (as she would appropriately call us), quit waving your
dicks around.

I think that it's a little different when it looks like one is using a
gender word to describe someone as weak and cowardly. But that's just
me, I guess. Like, "no one with a "pussy" would be expected to stop and
help those people."

I love it. Lighten up about people who compare their penis-surrogates
(guns) and engage in object adulation regarding a killing mechanism?
Maybe you really missed the point of what LA was trying to post:

guns suck they are not cool when they are bigger or last longer or
are more active after drugs are taken.

guns suck. you can rationalize all about how you need to self
defend, I guess that;s your choice , it's legal, blah blah

the fact remains GUNS SUCK

Wilbur was commenting on a reaction to the descriptive use of the female
anatomy, not guns. Get a grip (pun intended).

Luckily there hasn't been much around here. There was a few break-ins
a couple of decades ago and that was about a mile away and they mostly
just stole the feller's guns. And then, a year later, did it again.

There have been a few murders and attempted murders within a five mile
radius of where I live but those have always been family related. A
husband killed his wife, a son killed his brother and set out to kill
his parents but failed, a daughter tried to poison her parents and
siblings. The last one has been over a decade ago.

But I have been a bit nervous lately concerning the actions of my
Wife's brother who lives next door. When his dad died a few months
ago, he got about 80% of his dad's estate he tried to lie, cheat ans
steal more so we had it out with him. He is a bit of a coward but can
be dangerous when he gets really drunk and he has been drinking a lot
lately. And now his wife's family says that he has been deeply
depressed and out walking through the corn field late at night. I do
keep a ball bat handy.

I still think that the odds of something bad happening are small. And
there is no 100% safe no matter how many guns a person keeps in his
house.

Ah, I get it, you subscribe to the notion that men
and what is characteristically male behavior
aren't "right". I'm a joyful bundle of positive
male energy that doesn't buy into the underlying
male bashing that seems to prevail among the
politically correct. I embrace the feminine side
of who I am. Get over it. "Pussy" is just a word.

So calling someone "weak and cowardly" (pussy) is an awful insult to a
whole gender, but usign a "gender word" like "prick" to call someone
an aggressive and unempathetic jerk is not? Or it's somehow okay
(because all men *are* aggressive and unempathetic jerks)? Or what?

(and btw - I disagree that the meaning of the word "pussy" is "weak
and cowardly")

Wow. That's pretty unempathetic. But only passive-aggessive, I
guess...

and who determines what "the right amount " is anyway?. natural
variations, environmental factors (anyone smoke a lot of dope when they
