Anyone have any idea how to get a musty smell out of a leather strap?
I just bought a strap from a forum and it STINKS of mold/mildew.

It's a nice strap and I'd like to save it. I've tried neutral polish &
waterproofing but it still stinks.

Thanks,
Geezer

The stuff you use for deodorising car upholstery or carpets? Stick in a
bag with carpet deodorant, shake and leave for a bit?

You need to kill the mildew first. First wash the strap in a 50:50
solution of rubbing alcohol ("surgical spirit") and water.
Let it dry and then apply leather spray/polish/whatever.
Just did my leather jacket last week!

Thanks,

Any good leather conditioner aerosol spray.
Google *leather protector spray*.

Please, before you do ANY of this stuff, just lay it out in the yard in
the sunshine in the morning. Turn it over a mid-day. It will be fine
by nightfall.

What does window cleaner (Windex) do for it? Windex will
just about clean anything.

Thanks, George!
And thanks everyone for the suggestions.

This thing stunk so bad that I went out and bought another strap from Lakota
Leathers
http://www.lakotaleathers.com/ The best strap I've ever owned!

Still, I hate tossing the old one so I'll try the germicidal
soap/alcohol/leather conditioner spray route.

Wash it with saddle soap?

That was the first thing I did.
I washed it with germicidal soap this morning and it's hanging outside as we
speak. It's cold & sunny so it should help.
Next step is a 50% strength alcohol wash followed by Wilsons Leather
Conditioner.

If that doesn't work, its into the trash!

And the guy I bought it from assures me that it doesn't smell.

With a band name like that, ye could play some pretty kinky bars.....
or maybe even some country/western clubs if they didn't think about
the name too much.

Alrighty, then. Maybe in needs to be in a specifically Southern
Californian sun. That sounds like one impressively stinky strap!

That's not a guitar strap--that's a science project gone horrible wrong!

Try a domestic/car deodorant. Having lived in the wet tropics, I know
from experience how effective they are. They was one I could get in
Darwin from the Greek supermarkets that came in a small dropping bottle.
No perfume in it, and a couple of drops would banish all the stink
inside a car, near-miraculous.

Did the germicidal soap wash and outside drying session today...MUCH better!
Gonna do the alcohol wash tomorrow and the leather conditioner on Monday.
It smells like it's going to work!
After the leather treatment, I'll be doing saddle soap and neutral polish
again...in a week or so.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! I think I have it licked!
