I owe you a response to your email... will get to it soon. I'm glad you got
to meet Ellen at Folk Alliance. She is a pretty talented singer-songwriter,
and well known in these parts. If you ever come back down, I'll make sure
you get to see her again. (She's also the one with the huge property who
hosts song swaps and house concerts and has campfires and jams at her
house.)

feel so loved. Now, I am reading and rereading all these messages from so
many friends, and I feel totally overwhelmed. I thought I'd try and answer
them individually, but by the time I am thru, it won't be my birthday
anymore. So... thank you all, from the bottom of my heart."
It's true. I am sure that it's somewhat the internet/Facebook/social
networking phenomenon... but it just amazed me how many friends wrote me
personal notes (both here, and on Facebook, and via email, and on the South
Florida Folk mailing lists)... and it just felt really nice.
I did have a terrible week leading up to my birthday, as many of you know (a
killer migraine that just wouldn't end... knocked me out for most of the
week), but by the time the weekend rolled around, I was able to enjoy it. I
decided to spend the ENTIRE weekend just enjoying the various music things
going on in the community. So Friday night was an open mic, followed by a
group jam. Saturday afternoon, I participated in a monthly acoustic
showcase held at a local library. Later that evening was our monthly song
swap, and it was a great turnout and a great night. I left that early to
attend the second half of a house concert (Roy Zimmerman), and then the
evening ended with jamming around the campfire (after the house concert).
So, my guitar got a ton of use all weekend. Okay... Sunday was supposed to
be another music day (Sing Out in the Park, another monthly event), but I
ended up with my head in the toilet all day, as the migraine came back with
a vengeance for one final stab at my head before leaving for good. So the
day was a waste.
For my birthday... yesterday... my husband surprised me with a gift that I
never expected but I can already tell I will love. No, not music related.
But my other big love is reading... and he got me a Kindle. I honestly
didn't expect it to be as cool as it is. But as much as I love reading, I
also love technology... so this is a marriage made in heaven. It is very
easy to use. I spent a good bit of the day yesterday playing with it and
learning its features. And then the evening browsing Amazon to see what
kinds of books and other reading materials were available. (Which is why I
never had time to swing by here and pick up all the messages you all left
for me.) I was amazed to find so many books available for free... many of
the classics are... and I sent 3 or 4 of them that I'd been wanting to read
to my Kindle, and they appeared within minutes. This thing can hold 1500
books. And no matter where you are in the world, you can get them
instantly, and pretty cheaply (less than half the price of buying a book,
and saves a lot of trees, too). The display is easy to read (and you can
change the font size, bookmark pages, make notes, etc.). All in all, as
cool gifts go, this is one of the coolest I've ever received.
So, I'll say goodbye now, and head off to crawl into bed with my Kindle and
"Pride and Prejudice."
