Playing machine or work of art?

This thought was prompted by the thread on D-16's versus D-18s.
 
Do you see merit in good looks, hand made, hand rubbed lacquer etc, or do you see your guitar as a music making machine? In the latter case, it would just have to sound and feel good, and be well made. Or maybe somewhere between.
 
I'm pretty much in the second group. If I had a custom guitar made, all the talk would be about tone and playability (as it was in the case of my Beltona), not much about purflings etc. I do take a lot of care with my guitars tho, mostly because I think about preserving resale value.
