Norman Blake's Church Street Blues

For reasons I won't go into I recently found myself very much
interested in the Norman Blake song "Church Street Blues". There's a
really great version by Tony Rice on

But, I don't have a flat pick license so I started thinking about how
to do it with a thumb pick and fingers and then I stumbled on

No, it's not a great production and Norman Blake or Tony Rice with a
flatpick is hard to beat, but that's really some nice playing that guy
does and he captures the flavor of the tune, in my opinion-- all
within three frets. From Tel Aviv, too. It's a small world we live
in.

Man, I really wonder if he isn't using the other fingers on his right hand,
but I see the pick going all the way across the strings too. Does Tony
always wiggle his fingers like that on the right hand?

I believe Rice's right hand is all with the pick. That's some
extraordinarily sophisticated right hand technique. Of course, it's
Tony Rice. I love that tune.

I'm pretty sure it's all flatpick. I play it but
since I don't flatpick worth a hoot I'm resigned
to doing it because it's a great song to sing
never mind using it as a guitar showcase.

I've loved Norman Blake's music for a real long time -- probably 1976
or 77. Two songs that I've learned from his records are his "Southern
Railroad Blues" and Jean Ritchie's "The L&N Don't Stop Here Anymore."
Both tunes he finger picks. Anybody who has seen me try to play
understands why I like those two.

Been fortunate enough to see him play (with Nancy) a couple times.
First in Ann Arbor back in 1979 and then about eight or ten years ago
at MerleFest, which, in my opinion, is about the best damn festival
anywhere, anytime.
