posted this, forgive me for the duplication. I've had no time, but I
just couldn't resist stopping long enough to post this. Guess I'd
better get my house ready for a BIG RMMGA gathering. I might be
seeing some of you next April! (I hope it's not the same time as

Guitar man strikes a chord with festival
A guitar fanatic has purchased one of the country's premier festivals
celebrating the instrument and is bringing it to South Florida.

Guitar-festival impresario Henry Lowenstein enjoys being amid his
guitar collection in his Miami Beach home. When Henry Lowenstein was
12, he saw Glen Campbell playing guitar on television and an obsession
was born.
It began with a $17 instrument in 1969 and peaked June 1 when the
Miami Beach lawyer -- with business partners Ron Hill and Eric Garcia
-- bought the Newport Guitar Festival.
The 3-year-old Rhode Island event -- a convergence of guitar builders,
musicians and collectors -- moves to the Miami Beach Convention Center
in April 2008.....

I heard that Julius was not going to be continuing on, and maybe this
move will be a good thing. It will certainly be good for the community
of guitar builders and guitar-buyers (!).
We'll see if they hold to the convention of every-other year, so that
the not-Healdsburg Festival will have it's own space.
Interesting article on this Lowenstein fellow...if I'm reading this
right, he also may have"purchased" the forum called "The 13th Fret."
The exact wording reads, "...and as of May 30, operator of
13thfret.com, an online community for the guitar world." I'm guessing
that Tom will still be banned!
In regards to local impact, Arlene, you'll have your choice of many
top-flight guitarists if you end up wanting to host a house concert
over that weekend!

I hope it's mid April. A year away, and already my mind is churning and

Wow. To be able to wander around and see Lance's guitars and Harvey's
guitars and Roy's guitars all at once! And second... I DO expect to have
some visitors that weekend.... hint hint Steve... and MANY others.
And as for a house concert, yes. I suppose I could do one that weekend.
But already I'm thinking... I want to go to the Festival and see it myself,
so I doubt I could do a concert the same weekend. And I'd want to host a
party at my house for all of you RMMGA people who might be attending. If I
do a concert, I'd want it to be the weekend before or the weekend after...
and I already have the guitarist in mind. Somebody whose name I heard
casually mentioned on here... and I checked out his music... and I was
TOTALLY blown away. First time I actually ever approached an unknown artist
and begged him to do a concert for me... usually it's the other way around.
And I've been negotiating with his manager to try to lure him and his band
(hint hint... he doesn't play in a ticket booth) down here... but it would
only be worth it to them if I could help them get some other gigs along the
way. So I've already been working on the Keys.. and if Miami is having the
guitar festival, it would be perfect!
So... is this usually just a weekend event? Wonder how I can find out when
it is. Googled it but couldn't get any information. Went to the Miami
Convention Center's website but their calendar doesn't show anything that
far ahead. I've got to start planning now if I want to make this happen...
If anybody finds out when it might be, please let me know.

Actually, Steve, Harvey got invited (and went) a few years ago after this
discussion came up and I made a passing comment that none of the Northern
California luthiers were invited. Someone on the newsgroup here, a friend of
Harvey's, called and asked Julius why Harvey hadn't been invited. So he was.
And he went, as we all would have, if we had been invited. To be fair, my
understanding is that Julius started this east coast event for luthiers who
could not attend the Healdsburg festival. It was brought up at an ASIA
convention that Julius was making plans with his east coast friends and one
thing led to another and the event was on. Friends of friends in the ASIA
community got invited first. It wasn't large enough to invite everybody.
Since a lot of us spend a lot of money doing the Healdsburg show, and we
don't go to the ASIA show because while it's a great resource for builders,
it doesn't sell guitars. So we were not in the know. Hopefully the luthiers
show in Miami will be more of a "come if you're interested" party. I would
like to go. I've never been to Florida....and all my favorite race car
drivers are there....and my wife was born in Florida...I have a customer
there who wants to take me fishing...I want to see a Manatee, I want to go
the visit Glades Gang (Wong, Durso, Wildley, Ed). I could go on. Sounds like
fun.

Really, this all surprises me! Invitation only? I could have sworn that I
remember talking to people who went (although maybe I'm confusing it with
Healdsburg). In fact, the summer that Harv first loaned me that VoyageAir,
I could have sworn I bumped into Steve Wildey and he was going to be demoing
the guitar for Harv. Maybe I dreamt it. I remember hearing both Donna and
Steve H. talk about being there and bumping into other RMMGA people there.
And I always assumed, with this sort of thing, that it had nothing to do
with invitation. Invitation? What the heck is that about? Seems to me
that if you want to pay for a display booth, you're in.
Guess I'll have to write to this Lowenstein fella and start getting chummy
with him...

April is my favorite time here. Well... April and October. It's when the
sizzle isn't in the air yet, but the winter chill is gone and it's warm
enough to finally hit the beach or the pool. I still do outdoor concerts in
April. (By May it's getting too warm.) Kaya hasn't been the same since
Norm left. And yes, Steve... your bed in April is already reserved. (By
the way, I'm about 45 minutes north of Miami. But still, it's close enough
that I think I can throw a party that weekend and people will come.)

Wong is in Orlando area, I think. I see Durso and Wildey around... and
they'd be on my invitation list for whatever I do here. I hope you guys all

Hmmm.... well, this is not a done deal, Larry. Just a fantasy on my part
right now. But one never knows.
Somebody mentioned hearing Brad Davis. I recognized his name because he's
on my MySpace site. I try to listen to the music when somebody asks me for
a friend request, but I guess somehow he slipped thru the cracks. So I went
back and listened, and was totally blown away. Then I started pulling up
youtube clips of him. And was even more blown away. He plays with a banjo
player (Greg Davis) and a bass player (Dan Miller) right now... and
sometimes performs with a singer-songwriter duo named Wil Maring (female)
and Robert Bowlin. Brad is one of the best flatpickers I have EVER heard,
not to mention that he has a wonderful voice and his songs are just
incredible. He has also played with some of the best. Wil Maring is also
very good. And Robert Bowlin is an incredible fingerstyle guitarist. They
probably all think I am totally nuts, as I have been writing to both Brad
and his bass player/manager, Dan. They probably think I'm some sort of
groupie or something. But... I'm in love. It's the first time in a while
that somebody's music has moved me this way. And I am determined to get at
least a few of them here for a concert.
Now... don't give away my little secret.... :)
By the way, Larry, I did not mean to leave you off that list. You went to
Newport, didn't you? I know you have family down here... but I would fully
expect that a trip to Miami for you would mean I'd get to see you!

purchase every CD he has released. He's incredible. If the house
concert doesn't work out with him and his band, or just him, then
perhaps he and Wil Maring, or Wil herself is an option? She also has a
Myspace site and is a wonderful songwriter and player. As an added plus
she is just one of those salt of the earth kind of kind persons the
world could use plenty more of.
It's disappointing to see the show move from my home state of Rhode
Island, but it also brings excitement and great opportunity to Florida.

I was at Newport one year...I may or may not make Healdsburg this year,
and that's about a 8-9 hour drive, not too much of a hassle... we'll
see what happens.
I can see that *you* might get some great benefits if this Lowenstein
fellow pulls things off without wrecking the event!

And yes, I did get on Mark Blanchard's wait list for a Classicool. It
is a nylon string built for steel string players - it is fantastic! I
played nylon string for many years, after playing steel for a few
years. Ten years ago I switched back to steel string and sold my
Ovation nylon string - that was a cool guitar! Occasionally I pick up
my student level Takamine nylon string and I even used it on a
recording a few years back, but Blanchard's guitar has created this
yearning and it is only getting worse over time. That guitar is
really special!

Yes, I believe so. We got on the wait list about nine months ago. I
think that that means that in about fifteen months we could get a call
saying that he is ready to start building our guitars. Then you have
to factor in a few things - Life's quirks and that thing called
"luthier time". Thus, this turns in to a bit of a trick question, and
thus, after much pondering, my response "I am really not sure!". ;-)
