Part "on T", part OT:

I got a paying gig and get to play/sing Friday. Next week.... less fun.

Trivia: What very well known singer attributes permanent vocal injury to
spinal neck surgery?

Don't spoil it for others, or you're disqualified from my free CD
(Cervical Disc) set!

Now it's only now pending 2nd opinion, but appears I have ACDF (anterior
cervical disc replacement/fusion) surgery coming, near term.

They go in through the throat, around the vocal cord, and remove the disc,
(in my case, < 2 > discs.... ) and replace with donor bone from hip or
cadaver, then fuse it all together.

From some heavy study, engineering POV, there's not a lot of choice here.

Wish me well or even better please pray for me... Hope to see and hear y'all
on the flip side.

yippe ki yay...

Oh bugger.

They have these procedures down pat these days Ray, so the real risk is
minimal, but I do identify with your feelings over such an operation
(not that the loss of my voice would be of much concern to those who've
heard me sing).

May the spirits be with you and with your surgeons and anesthetists.

Thanks Mike...and others. Somewhat agreed Mike... Dunno if "down pat" is
fully accurate... but you're right that risk of losing/paralyzing somebody
on the table is definitely not a usual. Long term "relief" has its
challenges.

This developed on me so recently, I'm "cramming" like a college senior
before finals to understand it...

Choices are Endoscopy, (minimally invasive but limited access, from the
backside)... Laser Techniques (most experimental/developmental and a ton of
lawsuits)... Artificial Discs (early on the development curve)...

And ACDF... (good access, lower in immediate risk, buys time, but transfers
stress to other vertebrae and can need more work down the road)

The amount of work and tradeoffs really point to ACDF.

From an Email I just sent to a valued friend:

Thanks so much. I have faith that I'll be ok.

Removing/replacing the disk is pretty much the convention for upper spine
and they've been doing it in various forms for awhile. Doctors say that it
eliminates daily danger of spinal cord pressure from herniated discs and
bone spurs, which can paralyze, and swear that it "works" to relieve the
pain... and from everything I understand, they're getting better at it.

From my knothole, there are a lot (of patients) on the web that say they're
not sure it helped pain at all, maybe made matters worse. For me, when it
hurts, (not that often) it's sharp shooting pain, beyond written
description. Otherwise it's kind of just numb arms, hands for now, with
dexterity and strength intact... (good signs that surgery will be
successful). Other symptoms may develop.

But from my current symptoms, the MRI's, and what I've read, that
clinically, I'm in "emergency" status and my body says something has to be
done soon or it'll just get worse all around.

Meanwhile I'm trying to avoid risky situations to my spinal cord, trying to
avoid pain meds whenever possible, and their drawbacks. And I'm still doing
my homework, on the right "practice" to let the doctors work it out for best
results. Finally, I'm trying to get loose ends in life (from before this
developed) tied up...

I have faith, but I need to figure out how to squeeze one year into a week
or 2... <grin>

If you get a chance, talk to her and find out if they used bone material or
artificial... Either way it seems more blogs are about the less than optimal
cessation of pain... Squeaky wheel syndrome I imagine, because my

How are you????

Havent heard from you, and was looking forward to it. Thinking of you
always makes me smile, and I was wondering if/when.

From what I understand about ACDF, both parts (bone AND titanium) are
pretty standard. The bone graft, whether from the patient or cadaver, fills
the gap, and hardware just holds it in alignment while it heals (fusion is
natural growth) from the bodily process.

If you don't get squeamish too easily, watch the youtube. I really find it
intriguing. It's not real "red" or anything like that.
