Mother has been rushed to hospital in St. Malo, don't know why...yet.
Can walk, pain in her right abdomen, can't answer simple questions
(like 'what day is it'). That's kind of conflicting - a stroke would
make her unable to talk coherently, an illness (like appendicitis - I
think she's the only person I know who's got an appendix - as far as I
know she's never even been indexed...) would simply leave her in pain.
Odd. Worrying..she's 79.
I don't do the prayers thing, but I am worried. Mostly because if she
dropped dead overnight I'd have to take care of my bloody father, who
will definitely take his time shrugging off his mor....

I see a trip to France in my very near future. Dad can't cook...and
mother won't be vertical for some time, I guess. Neither will Daddy -
he's going to do in a bottle of malt by the time the night's

Spoke to the hospital a few minutes ago. She's out of surgery. It's
weird - if it was Caroline or me neither of us would be worried -
we're middle aged and relatively fit. At Mother's age you start
worrying if she'll survive the anaesthetic. The people at St. Malo are
excellent though.
I am very proud of the National Health in the UK, but the French have
it down compared to just about anyone else in the world - they just
throw money at it, and they simply assume that when a doctor makes a
diagnosis he doesn't have to worry about the cost - just get on with
it.

Tense night, I think, then a lot of travelling and cooking for the
olds. With a bit of luck they'll be showing the Cape Town test on the
telly on the ferry..:-)

Even if you don't do the prayer thing, I'll do it for you. I've only had
problem with one and that was the day Lady Di was killed and at that
time I wish I could have traded places with her. The morphine helped,
but didn't stop the pain entirely. I send my best and prayers to both
your parents and you as well.

Well, she's out of surgery - I imagine that was less painful than
having to piss the thing out.
I remember the day Lady Di died well. We were camping, it was pissing
down with rain. We went to see 'Men in Black' in Derby. Good film,
miserable day. We struck camp and cut the holiday short. No-one was
having any fun.
The hospital tell me she's in recovery but they won't talk. Late at
night, language problems...

Man, kidney stones are extremely painful. My idiot brother-in-law has
had them twice. He got to experience some groovy pain killers while
waiting to piss them out.

I think at her age, anything is serious. However, the biggest part of
kidney stones is the excruciating pain. I know there are better
alternatives now. When I first had mine, there was little more than
morphine and pass it. If they can extract it surgically, even with the
concern about the anesthetic, it'll be easier on her than passing it.

My experience is... when you are in pain, painkillers aren't worth a crap.
They only deaden the pain a little bit and make it bearable. It's only when
you take them when not in pain that they are any fun.

A power soak is a speaker volume control - more amp drive at less volume.
oftimes handy for matching levels with other players whilst still beating the
everloving shit out of the amp.
The tone bypass in this case is a footswitch that turns the amp up to 11 - more
din!

Being 69 (this month) I have had 2 kidney stones and 2 bladder
stones. The second was so large my Doctor forbid me to drive from Iowa
to Arkansas for Christmas. I had TO STAY HOME DRINK LOTS OF FLUIDS AND
PRAY that it did not try to pass.
There is a chance your mom may pass another one and a discussion
with her Doctor might be in order. The tube that connects the Kidney to
the bladder passes over the hip bone and this is the narrowest point
and the place any large Kidney stone mill have trouble. So you might
want to discuss it with her Doctor if you get a chance and find out
what could or might happen in the future. Good luck and good vibes your
