So it appeared. Didn't get much visitin' time as I had to play and he
and Kate had a demanding social schedule. (Maybe she doesn't want him
gettin' too comfortable in any one locale.) The event generated
sufficient interest that I look forward to a better visitin' op.

Well.... I had a feeling my good name would be besmirched around
here.... :-)
Here's a bit of an update.... I haven't been here AT ALL for quite a
while. It was a combination and culmination of a number of things,
most of which I'd be comfortable with just leaving in the past.
I had a thought a couple of weeks ago about coming back here on
January 1... OK, so I haven't done much in the way of improving my on-
time skills! :-) I signed on back then and took a look at what was
happening, just to sort of get a feeling…. . Unfortunately, I opened
a thread that had some real anger being put out and I thought let’s
just close this and forget about New Year's Day.....
Then it was off to Spicewood (Austin) for a pickin' party on January
1.... I wanted Kate to finally meet at least a few of the reprobates I
hang around with down there! Maybe five years back I went to the
party and was so stunned by the level of talent that I left my guitar
in the car..... I decided this year would be different. More on the
party in a bit.
Anyway, we got down there and had a GREAT time. I contacted Hank...
We had missed each other a bunch of times these past visits and I
decided that THIS was the year we would make it happen.
Unfortunately, Kate had discovered that The Band Of Heathens (her
favorite band!) was playing at Gruene Hall, somewhere out in the wilds
of the hill country. So we went and had dinner at Threadgill's, met
the owner and repository for all things Armidillo, Eddie Wilson
(Hank, do I have that name right?) and listened to Hank jam with Earl
Poole Ball.... I had to look up that name to be sure I was even
close! I remembered that he had played on "Sweetheart of the Rodeo"!!
Anyway (I guess I'm still long-winded!), Earl was terrific, but we
could only stay for maybe six songs, but they stopped me dead in the
doorway when they launched into "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere"! I stood
there and chirped along with most of the lyrics!! By the way, Hank is
a REAL guitar player.... I watched him as he was warming up and he
broke the Four Chord, Three Fret Rule about twenty times in the first
minute he had the guitar in his hands! And Hank, that's a McCollum,
right?
We left Threadgill’s and barreled (at the speed limit… This was Texas,
after all!) down 35 to Gruene Hall for The Heathens. If you mixed
parts of The Band, The Subdudes, and Little Feat, you’d have some idea
of what they do. But they are very much their own band… We stood with
the wife and in-laws of one of the Heathen’s and had a wonderful
time….
The Party…. Freddy Powers is a songwriter…. He’s a picker…. He’s a
wonderful man who, over the last six years, I have been proud to call
a friend. Freddy also has Parkinson’s Disease. He told me that what
he misses most is playing the guitar…..
As I said, I refused to take my guitar out of the car last time, but
this time I was determined to play, or at least have bring the guitar
into the house! The level of performance at the party is astonishing
every year. I told the list lady to put me in a sliding position… As
folks came in and signed up, I moved down. I was the absolute last
person on the list all evening. Most everyone was gone by the time I
went up to the mic…. Kate, friends I was staying with, the owners of
the house, maybe twenty people in all, were left…. and Freddy, of
course. I did my usual Guy Clark stuff…. Kate said I was wonderful,
others were enthusiastic, and Freddy was VERY kind….. I thought what
I always think…. It was a GREAT night.
So… Meeting Hank… By the by, what a gentleman he is. Meeting Hank had
me thinking about rmmga again. What with all the emotional content of
the week in Texas and my wanting to see what was happening here, here
I am. I guess we’ll see how it goes.

My poor dog is still waiting on the child support payments. As a guest,
Norman is a jewel in regards to the human species. He did seem concerned
that I preferred 000 Martins to dreadnaughts. My daughters like talking to
him but thought he talked funny. My wife is from Upstate New York and
explained that Norm's dialect was that of the lower Yankee classes. :-{)
Look forward to Norm's next visit and wish I could make it down to Austin
to see him.

So good to hear from yall, Norman!! Al and Cea keep telling me I need to
meet Hank but they may be trying to protect him from my influence. When ye
comin' to North Texas? We had a little get together in Euless on New Year's
Day; wish ye could have made that. I had a couple of Spaten Optimators

I'm doing better then I deserve
....and tonite is, music nite!
Our acoustic jam group is putting smiles on a lot of faces
lately...we are so fortunate to have this weekly musical gathering and
the feelings of renewal that come with it.
I'll make a list of the songs from tonite and post it tomorrow. I know
the stuff is right up your alley.

Hmmmm...
After watching a PBS show dealing with depression, about an hour ago
Kate and I had a chat about self-image. I know yours was an off-hand
comment, but... How good do you think you deserve to feel? Just
wondering. And I'm NOT suggestion yhat you suffer from depression.
I've played a bunch of guitar gatherings recently, most notably the
Texas pickin' party and Brendapalooza at Brenda and George's house.
There not a lot I do that makes me feel better than getting together
with people and beating up guitars, especially when something results
that sounds like an approximation of music. I wish ours were
weekly....

Well your uh... Kate certainly has good taste in music. I checked out
The Band of Heathens and am really impressed. I guess I wouldn't be
the first to think of The Band while listening to them, eh? One of the
things I've appreciated most about "this place" over the years has
been the music recommendations. Always something new(to me) and good
popping up.
Oh and welcome back. It seems your presence has been missed. :-)

The first time I heard them they didn't get through thirty seconds of
playing before I was knocked out (I was going to say twelve bars, but
I'm not sure what a bar is!)!! To my ear, the are a mixture of The
Band, Little Feat, and the Subdudes.... I have their albums, but live
(like so many things!) is the way to go with them.
