Scale length?
I'm having a discussion in rmmgj aboout the effect of scale length on tone. Someone is suggesting that 24.75 gives a dark sound compared with a light sound from 25.5 - his words. What say? Al, Kevin? -- Tony Done [link] [link]... more »

Kerfed Sides
I had the opportunity to examine a 19th century Appalacian dulcimer recently. I saw something that I have not seen before. The sides on the dulcimer were kerfed--the whole side, not just separate top and bottom kerfing as found on acoustic guitars. The sides looked to be about 1/4 to 3/8 inch think, with about a 1/8 deep saw kerfs spaced... more »

Padouk
Has anybody built with Padouk? I recently found some nice quarter-sawn boards which I purchased. It's a bit orange, but nice grain and dense. The color seems to go toward brown when finish is applied, so I think it will be nice. Any unusual safety concerns? Dave

Filling Pores on Mahogany and Rosewood
Just curious--what do you all usually do about filling the pores of timbers like Mahogany and Rosewood when prepping for finish? Best wishes, Dr. Jim Lowther

Gibson Adjustable Bridge
Kevin's recent comments on unusual things Gibson has done with acoustics over the years got me thinking again about the LG-2 I was given (not with which is was gifted). I have had it for a few months now and it has realy grown on me. I probably would never have bought a cherry sunburst finish guitar, but I have managed to overcome... more »

More daft Gibson tricks
Last year when I encountered a 2-piece Brazillian rosewood bridgeplate in a '68 Country-Western Gibson I thought perhaps it was a one-off, as so many odd details with 60s Gibsons seem to be. Wrong. Last week I bought a '69 B-45 12 string and today I started trying to turn it into a musical... more »

Cheap and easy finish
I'm refinishing my Burny, that was the subject of the catalysed poly thread. It will involve cutting back and overspraying the current finish. I can't get nitro, and I want if possible to keep it cheap and simple, using spray cans. Has anyone used or has any ideas on car bodywork touch up cans? They are... more »

vermin control
Isn't there some way to get rid of jackasses like 'Noah' and 'salvatore 45'? The future of newsgroups is tenuous enough without the contributions of these clowns. KH
