Does anyone happen to know which is the lighter wood-- cherry or
walnut?

Hoadly gives the average specific gravity (density relative to that of
water) of black cherry as .5, and black walnut as about .56. That's
interesting: I tend to think of walnut as a bit lighter than cherry.
Both range widely, of course.

I had started my project, using walnut, which I kinda thought was
light as hardwoods go. But by the time everything is finished, it's
gonna be a rather heavy mama jamma nontheless. Cherry is cheaper-- and
I hoped, significantly lighter. Sigh... But as the song says, we can't
always get what we want. :-)
