I've been hired to play at the installation of Presbyterian Ministers at
one of the local churches here in Mississippi. Specifically, they want
me to play during the processional and the recessional. I've been asked
to play something that might be played for the Church of Scotland. The
only tunes I can think of are Highland Cathedral, Ode to Joy, and Simple
Gifts. Can anyone offer me some suggestions?

Thanks,

Sam Thomas

How about "All Creatures of Our God and King" (tune name is Lasst uns
erfreuen) and the tune Hyfrodol (words are usually "Love Divine all Loves
Excelling") and "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" (the tune name is
Nettleton)?

I've played these in church and they work well, but I don't know if they're
used in the Church of Scotland. All three would, however, be familiar to
Presbyterians, especially the first.

A wonderful tune fully adaptable to the Highland scale is
the Charles Wesley hymn "Come Thou Long Expected
Jesus". This hymn has been a standard in both the Methodist
and Presbyterian hymnals forever.

"The King of Love My Shepherd Is" works beautifully and is very appropriate
to an installation of a minister. The tune name is "ST. COLUMBA".

Others might be :

1. Guide me, O Thou Great Jehovah
2. By Cool Siloam's Shady Rill
3. Thus and Did My Saviour Bleed
4. The Lord's My Shepherd

...or maybe just sit down to the piano with a hymnal and see what works within
the range.
