I dunno, I'll try. I honestly don't know when I'll get my computer back, or
if, but to be honest I don't think I'll mind that much. I need a change.
Anyway, if I do get my comp back I'll definately do more consume stuff, but
for the time being it's gone, I guess. It makes me kinda sad, because my
involvement in music has been the defining element of my life for the last 4
years, but I realized I'll be really pissed at myself if I'm 30 years old and
all I have to show for it is a big record collection. I'm glad I've made the
decision to do this while I'm still young and able, because I don't want to
deal with regret in my old age. Music gave me the first little push,
convincing me that for the first time in my life I could actually do
something that mattered that I could share with others, and this is just the
logical continuation of that. I want to live big and have cool stories to
tell when I'm grey.
J
> Can I ask you why you are enlisting? The military service was

Because I can. I personally believe non-conscript volunteer forces are the
way to go because that way you at least ensure that everyone who's there
wants to be there. Conscripts don't fight because they just want to go
home. As for my reasons, I guess I just need a change in life, and I'm not
fond of half-measures: as usual, I'm diving into the unknown head first. I
want to feel like I'm challenged every day, and to feel like I'm a part of
something more meaningful than commercial 9-5 white picket fence drudgery.
I'm bored with shit jobs and no fulfillment. Besides, things military are
my first love, almost. I mean, who else memorizes stupid details like the
cyclic rate of fire of an MG42 for fun, really? I'm tired of thinking
about it, I want to start doing. So yeah. I just hope it lives up to my
expectations. Some people have tried to convince me it's nothing more than
boy scouts with guns. Well, my answer to that is...maybe for them. *I*
choose my attitude about things.
J
> When/Where you doing basic Training?
13 weeks in St. Jean, Quebec. Hopefully it'll be far out in the bush so I
won't have to deal with those crazy Frenchmen too much:P After that,
probably about 2 years at various training facilities...the armour school
at Gagetown, etc. As long as I don't get to guard the north pole from
renegade penguins, I'll be happy. I need an escape from sedentary suburban
bliss.

Unless you're defending your home in which case there's nowhere to

should all do their part to defend the country. If your armed forces

After the bombing of the Baldwins and the subsequent attempt at public
execution of 40% of Canada's gross national product, the Canucks decided to
hatch a secret plan to invade the US and re-institute a government of their
own devising to enforce the love of Alanis Morissette.

I wasn't talking in terms of ideology-in that sense, I agree that in times of
need all people should do their part for the nation that like it or not, gave
them their lives and freedoms...the tree of liberty must periodically be
refreshed by the blood of patriots, and all that-but simply a measure of force
quality: historically speaking, the overall level of professionalism and morale
in conscript armies has been consistantly and drastically lower than those of
volunteer forces. It seems an obvious psychological reality to me that people
who choose armed service rather than are forced into it will pursue it with more
energy and vigour. In fact, the only thoroughly excellent conscript-based armed
force I can think of at the moment was the Wehrmacht, and that was because they
drew their recruits from an already highly disciplined and motivated population,
one thoroughly indoctrinated to the idea of the precariousness of their own
national survival. And even then, elites like the Waffen SS, GrossDeutschesland
Panzer Korps, Luftwaffe Fallschirmjagers, etc, were volunteer-only with high
recruiting standards almost until the end of the war.

Keith, you don't have to get pissy about it. All I was suggesting is that I'm
glad I came to this decision now rather than 10 or 20 years from now when it
would be difficult and impossible, respectively, for me to put it into
practice. I'm in good health now but a decade of sedentary retail work,
computer use, and occasional bar outtings would change that for the worse, I
think, and so I'm grateful I came to this point in my life now rather than
later, is all.

Not if every morning you get to wake up and go jump out of airplanes and roll in
the mud and play with grenades for a living. At least for me...I dunno, I'm tired
of compartmentalizing the parts of my life that give me real, lasting satisfaction
into my leisure time. Joining the military for me represents both a conscious
rejection of what I believe to be the corrupt and decadent values of North American
popular culture [honestly, comparisons to the late Roman Empire spring to mind more
and more these days] and a personal affirmation not to be mediocre in my own life.
I want to be able to look back at the end of it all and say that I lived in
interesting times, did cool stuff, had great friends and memorable enemies, and
came out of it with most of my limbs still attached. I look upon my involvement
with music and subculture as a valuable learning experience because it taught me I
can enjoy things and be good at them, a novel experience at first, and I want that
kind of feeling more often in my life. I would seriously encourage anyone who's
feeling like there's not much left for them but meaningless employment and
anonymous surburban bliss to consider trying this way of life out like I am...once
you think about it seriously, it's amazing how easy it is to cut ties with things
that used to seem gravely important. I took out my earrings yesterday and didn't
feel much of anything about it. Kinda anticlimatic.
>
> You are now officially on the other side of the fence from say, WIPO

When people are free to do as they wish, they usually imitate each other. I'd have
more respect for most "activists" if they were seriously interested in and
committed to the causes they champion...instead, it seems like most of them are
into it because it's the punk rock thing to do. Don't get me wrong, I'm very glad
in principle that we have young people willing to reject the vague nihilism and
"I'm not going to get involved" miasma of modern society, but I believe a crucial
step from well-meaning but juvenile behavior to adult behavior is the realization
that noise and spectacle alone achieve nothing. Concrete, decisive, organized,
motivated ACTION is what changes the world. A couple weeks ago I watched rich
twenty-something yuppies from the suburbs pelt poorly-equipped, bewildered-looking
Edmonton beat cops with bottles and broken glass to celebrate "Canada Day". I
watched them trash indie stores, throw concrete bus benches into the middle of the
street, and leave Starbucks and Chapters completely unscathed. They may have
thought they were making some sort of statement...I'll make my statement by going
to another country and trying to help people live in peace, if they're prepared for
it. Interpret that how you will, but I honestly believe that what I'm doing is the
right thing for me, or for anyone more committed to real productive action than
empty community college/arty coffee house style rhetoric. I'd like to earn the
approval of other people...RMI in general has been great friends and entertaining
nemeses over the years...I'd *like* to know people are proud of me...but I don't
*need* it. The most meaningful validation in this comes from myself. I just hope
that whether people approve of my decision or not, they can at least respect my
commitment to doing what I think is right.
I'm going to try and make it down for your show in Calgary, man. I must once again

Quite frankly I don't believe that. If you send your conscripts to
some other country then yes, but not if they defend their homes.
Yes, professionalism may be a problem, but not motivation. Ask
the Finns.
With conscription you get everyone, including the well motivated
people. You pick the best ones for the job. A good thing with a
conscription army is that you get a lot for competence for
free. People have civilian jobs and knows stuff that professional
soldiers don't.
For instance, take the peacekeeping forces who's been in former
Yugoslavia. The Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and Finish units were all
made up of volunteers, but very few professional soldiers (just the
officers). You end up with a very versatile unit who can take care of
themselves, build their own camps and so on. When the US came they
sent civilians in first to build their camps for them. When a couple
of dozen US soldiers were waiting at a train station and a bunch of
kids started trying to get candy and stuff from them, they couldn't
handle the situation and asked the Swedes for help (they sent three
guys who told the kids to go away).
I also remember reading about a PFP exercise in the Netherlands where
a US airborne unit faced demonstrating civilians and their commander
immediately asked permission to open fire.

I dont think you'll find any elite forces that aren't volunteer-only
even in countries with conscription.

Well, since I'm in a rare moment of humility right now (I almost got
killed while washing my car... don't ask), I thought I'd see what it's like
to be a newbie again.
What does "quotesfiled" mean? Does that mean you saved the post to
your hard drive?

too late. i'm asking. how the hell did that happen???!
i got hit by a car last week. luckily, i saw the car coming so i had time
to move my feet out of the way. unluckily, i couldnt fucking move much cuz
i was right up against a row of cars. those side mirrors hurt! heheh,
dumbfuck drunk drivers.

Well, I live in a court, which is shaped like a key, with the houses
on the perimeter.
I was washing my car and listening to music through a boom box. I
had my car in my driveway, and I was behind it, hosing off the back. I moved
to get the bucket out of the way, and a car crashed into the spot where I'd
just been. It was my neighbor's car - his kid was inside, and he released
the parking brake, and the car rolled across the court and smashed directly
into mine. I think my legs would have been pulped.
I think my insurance premiums are going to go up now. I hate kids.

Mike, you're so fat that even a two-foot gap would cause you to
complain you "can't move."
> dumbfuck drunk drivers.
And kids, dammit. Kids that live across the street from you always
suck.

hahaha. not true. i was up on the tips of my toes, and most of my fat is
in my belly. i got hit on my thigh. fat or no fat there wasnt much i
could have done. i'm just lucky i didnt get hit in the crotch. heheh

grah. dont get me started on the kids and thier damn half pipe. they're
on that thing, waking me up at the ungodly hour of 4pm.
The neighbor's parents or their insurance should be covering the
damage; your insurance company should never need to worry about it.
Well, for me it just means a file where I put amusing quotes I find in. You
can get all l33t and set it up so that a quote will be randomly chosen and
placed in you sig whenever you post.
