God Knows.

We've received so many e-mails about this date, most disagreeing with each
other, I have no idea when it is. The most recent of those e-mails, from the
esteemed Slaghuis itself, asserted that it was the 7th August...

What is an overworked bunch of goffs to do...? ;o)

Spoke to sam last night; he got the date wrong. The gig was last
night, there is no London gig in august.

The next UK gigs are:

04.08.99 UK NOTTINGHAM ROCK CITY
07.08.99 UK BROCKWELL PARK SUMMER RIGHTS FESTIVAL

I should probably mention that last night was a bit of a stormer too.
It was dead hot and sweaty but a damn fine performance, they even
pulled 'Peekaboo' out of the closet as well as a cover of Iggy's
'Nightclubbin'. Best song was still 'Second Floor' though :)

How very Wayne's World.
Well, the image in my head right now.

So, did you ask him if he's putting out a NEW album?

(How can a man go from being so awful (early Tubeway Army) to so good
(Replicas onward) to so awful (mid-80s/mid 90s) and then so wonderful again
(Dawn/Exile)?

Did I bollox. :O

If I'm going to a gig, when I'm not watching the bands, I'm at the bar,
and there's little time for anything else...

Personally speaking, anything he does now, will never be as good as what
he did then, so why waste the time? I wonder how much Fear Factory paid
him to sing a few verses of 'Cars'.

So, if someone has a hit album, and a few years pass they should never
try to make music again because they won't be able to be as good as
they once were? It's better to try and fail than to never try again.
Besides, there's plenty of bands that went on to record again and
sound better than their original "glory days". I'm not a huge Gary
Numan fan, but I think his most recent stuff is pretty damned good.
I'd hate to see more people share your philosophy, otherwise all bands
would cease to record once they had a hit.

although i'm not totally agreeing with alexanders point.. i'm disagreeing
with that one... in the world of music you can live forever having released
a load of really brilliant stuff.. or you can die athousand deaths by
releasing a load of shite and getting slatted for it...

i listen to my dad and his friends talking... and if someone was once great
and hasn't released anything for ages they'll talk for ages about him, or
them, or her... if someone's recently come out with something shite they
tend to get a side mention, and then they move on to something else (i'm
using this example cause i haven't really been into any people or bands long
enough to have experianced someone not releasing something for 10 years then
coming out with something shite).

I disagree.
Can't speak about the Fearful Factory collaboration,
but the latest Numan album (and the one before it) far outstrip anything since
Replicas IMNSHO.

Exactly! I strongly commend the artist that continues his/her efforts to record
again after a hit album. Especially when they evolve their personal style,
change and grow. The worst is when an artists re-releases the same hit album
over and over again due to public and record company pressure. I can't imagine
how much courage it would take for a musician who has had tremendous success
with one style of music to try and change that sound and style. I only wish
more industrial bands would do this instead of re-releasing the same sounding
album(s). Gary Numan is a perfect example of an artist that has changed with
the times. Even though he has been around a long time, his music still is
current and appeals to the underground. I am relatively young and not as
familiar with Numan's earlier work but recently discovered his music through
the album "Exile" and absolutely loved it.

Yes, but the trouble is that whilst we might think it's shite, the
musicians themselves generally (but not always...) think it's worth
releasing.

Of course, some of these musician types are too underqualified to do
anything else, so they keep on musicianing even when sometimes we wish
they wouldn't :)

Let's face it, it's either that or be a taxi driver[1] :)

I do know exactly what you mean, though, there are certain groups I wish
had split up long ago rather than embarrass themselves further- but
every now and again a group will suddenly go back on form and make the
"shite years" worth enduring.

For instance, I wished Killing Joke had split up before they released
"Outside the Gate".

Then they released "Extremities".

Even now I get shudders listening to "Money Is Not Our God" and
realising that Killing Joke were *back*... if they'd split up when I
thought they should have, we'd never have had that or "Pandemonium"-
which is a pretty amazing album, especially for a band who'd been going
15 years or so at the time.

I think the issue here is not the making music, but the releasing of
said music to an unsuspecting public.

Musicians, like any artists, need to be perfectionists. There's no
shame in admitting that some of one's work is a bag of shite, so long as
that work isn't put on an album. Better to be a little bit self-
critical & wait till one has a superb album to release, even if it
*does* take ten years.

Aye, I can't think of many bands that made a comeback after taking their
final nosedive. Metallica are lost in a world of soft rock after a huge
metal career... I wonder who people are really going to see at the Big Day
Out this weekend... Marilyn Manson or headliners Metallica? Alien Sex
Fiend or living out on planet bleepy, so far underground they may as well
be dead... Led Zepplin finished years ago, but I suppose Plant & Page
still get to look forward to being on the front cover of Kerrang! every
now and then.... if you can call that fame.... Queen are still plodding
along without Mr Mercury... can anybody name their last album? The list
goes on and on.

As for bands that gave up whilst the going was good.... look at Bauhaus
and their recent world tours.

Of course, there are exceptions... kinda... you could say Blondie is doing
quite well, although they're never going to hit the peaks they used to...
same with The Creatures... great band, but not as classic as the Banshees.

Name one... "New Order?" ;P

Wire split up (although they called it a sabbatical instead of a
breakup) for several years and reunited to continue putting out great
music...

It's the "since" word that I'm on about ;)

However, I may go and but the latest album if it really is up to scratch.

I would agree with this. I would rather wait years and years and get a
quality album rather than get the same recycled stuff on a yearly basis.
A good example of this is KMFDM. Don't get me wrong, I love KMFDM, but I
would have rather heard them branch out a bit with their music rather than
hearing the same thematic guitar riff on every single album.

Then again, recycled is better than utter garbage.

In the end, I guess it comes down to money. If your album is selling
really well, then you aren't in such a hurry to release more music. You
can sit back and take your time and put out a quality product. However,
if you are literally living from album to album, tour to tour, I guess
necessity is the mother of invention, or at least music making in those
cases.

I think it is.
But then I could go on and on about it for hours.

Don't you or Ben play anything off it at Malice?

Well, I don't, obviously, cos I don't have it.

And I don't think Ben plays much Numan either... although I may be
wrong, but i can't remember seeing any on the setlists recently.

Well, saying that, I did go down to Beggar's Banquet today and picked
up 'Best Of The Bolshoi' as well as Gary Numan - Tubeway Army (Premier
Hits)... £5.99 each on CD.. bargain!

Now... d'ya think Ben will let me get away with playing Cars at
Malice?

I think not... ;)

I usually play something off either Exile or Sacrifice at Exile (funny
that). Both are damn good albums, Exile in particular. Buy buy buy!
