Lyrics Post - Dhiil di_e jaa ... chal chal chamelii baag mein
shamshad, durrani and saathi - film daadaa - 1949
MD - Shaukat Dehlavi 'Naashaad'

This is the promised tribute to Laxmikant Pyarelal. I
first thought this would be a tribute to R D Burman; but
then discovered that it was Laxmi-Pyare who were the MDs
of Krodhi - 1981-ish. I have actually seen the film
(blush and shudder, shudder and blush). I was surprised
that the third-rate song, 'chal chameli baag mein', in
that film was composed by the fifth-rate MD duo L-P. I
had no plans to pay tribute to them. But V Balsara
stepped forward with 'more naina sawan bhaado' to enable
me to post words later MDed by RDB. Now Shaukat Dehlavi
'Naashaad' is dragged as my ally for this post.

Kalra-ji has informed me that this was for him a long
forgotten song which used to be played by Radio Ceylon
during the kite season. It is a most charming kite-song.
He says this song was often heard alongwith the kite song
in Dillagi; but I haven't heard it. In 1957, the lifeless
kite song 'chali chali re patang meri', sung by Lata-Rafi
for Chitragupta in Bhabhi, was released. I will soon post
link to mp3 of Naashaad's patang-song. The listeners will
surely notice the contrast between Naashaad's magic and
the dull effort by Chitragupta.

Far from having a discussion group dedicated to his
music, Naashaad is either completely unknown to music
fans or is confused with a more famous MD with a similar
name. But he has quite a few gems to his credit. He
deserves to be remembered for them. This kite-song is a
testimony to his class. He may not have been very
prolific; but he composed wonderful songs. Lata's solo in
Baradari, 'dard bharaa dil bhar bhar aaye', is a
masterpiece by Nashad. I have read that he composed some
nice songs after leaving India in early 1960s for
Pakistan. Whenever an assignment came his way, he showed
his quality. Another superb, but not widely known, song
comes to mind : 'ek dil do hai.n talabgaar badi mushkil
hai', a Talat-Suman duet, softly sung, in Darwaazaa. Just
how these gems have remained rare is a mystery. Even
after listening to all the post-1970 garbage, is it that
difficult for people to have some time for really good
songs?

I would like to know about Nashad's 1940s output. The
following names appear in 1940s Geet Kosh, each of which
might allude to Nashad : Shaukat Hussain (Dehlavi) (Jeene
Do - 1948), Shaukat Dehlavi (Payal - 1948, Suhagi -
1948), Shaukat Ali (Nashad) (Toote Tare - 1948), and
Shaukat Dehlavi 'Naashaad' (Daadaa - 1949).

While going through HFGK pages, I also found some
interesting entries for 1948/49 : a film MDed by Amirbai
Karnataki, a film MDed by Sufi Samaaj and a film jointly
MDed by Shanta Apte and M. Golwalkar (Madhukar Golwalkar,
who has composed the famous Marathi song by Savarkar :
'Jayostute').

Some of Naashad's popular films are:
Naghma(sometimes written as Nagma) BaDi mushkil se dil ki beqarari ko qarar
Zindagi ya Toofaan
Baradari
He migrated to Pakistan alongwith Nakhshab Jarchavi and composed music for may
be more than fifty films.I think he died in late seventies.
His son Wajid Ali Naashad is a composer too.

Here is the link :
http://gantisri.tripod.com/dn-23aug.zip

It is thanks to Mr Srinivas Ganti that I have been able to share the clips
with others over the last few weeks. The zip-file covers three full/partial
songs whose lyrics I have posted recently. The songs are from the films
Bhai, Dada, and Vidyapati.
