Hello,
In a recent India trip, I came across a set of Gujarati songs which
seem to be a good representative of the work done by singers
associated with the Hindi film industry for Gujarati (film and
non-film) music. My guess is that the film soundtracks are composed
predominantly by Avinash Vyas, Dilip Dholakia coming in a distant
second (any information to the contrary will be welcomed !) Non-film
songs are composed by these two as well as composers like Ninu
Majumdar and Kesri Mistry. I am categorizing the songs by singer
mainly because I do not have composer names for most of them. Please
add any information you can !
Lata Mangeshkar :
===============
She has sung, it would seem, mainly in the 50s and 60s and some in
the 70s. Not a large number of songs but a few extraordinary ones !
* maajham raate nitarti nabh ni chaa.ndni (music Avinash Vyas)
In his book, Harish Bhimani recounts a story. Lata had gone to
meet the great Khemchand Prakash, presumably for an audition,
with AV. On that occassion, she sang this song. Of course, it was
recorded much later - my guess is late-50s. What a beautiful song
it is ! Lovely melody, an unusual rhythm (derived from Guj. folk)
nice lyrics and beautifully sung.
* roople maDhi chhe saari raat re (music Dilip Dholakia)
Another lovely song. This was the song Lata chose to sing in its
entirety at her first live show in England. In this song, she has
charmingly used some colloquial words to great effect.
* kaho ne kai dishaa maa.n
* benaa re saasariye jaataa
* he kaanuDaa taari govaalaN
Unusual tune for what is essentially a bhajan. Like the easy pace
plus the intensity of feeling.
* chaa.nchar ni chaadar oDhi
* havay sakhi nahi.n boloo.n nahi.n boloo.n nahi.n boloo.n re
She sounds very sweet in this song. Great use of the lower part
of her vocal range. Who is the MD ? Just for voice quality and
range this would be close to my favourite Gujarati song sung by
Lata.
* ek rajkaN sooraj thavaa ne shamaNe
A rather profound song sung like a ghazal (no flames please,
Abhay. As you can see, some myths still remain :) Again, a
leisurely pace help accentuate the rather sobre mood.
* na na nahi.n aavoo.n
* kesuDaa naa van ni
* tane saachve paarvati
* odhavji mara vhaala ne
* aaj no chaa.ndaliyo
* maari veNi maa.n chaar-chaar phool (film Samay Varte Saavdhaan)
* mehndi te vaavi maaLve (film Mehndi Rang Laagyo music AV)
* nayan chakchur chhe (with Rafi film Mehndi Rang Laagyo music AV)
The melody is very tightly maintained. The orchestration is very
impressive. Hats off to AV for this one ! Lata outdoes Rafi in
all aspects of singing here.
Asha Bhosale :
============
She has been quite prolific in Gujarati songs. And she has some good
songs to her credit. From perhaps the late 60s she worked closely
with AV and later his son Gaurang. It seems as if Asha has sung lots
of folkish songs in Gujarati.
* chhelaaji re maari haaTu paaTaN thii
* oo.nchi talaavDi ni kor
* nahi.n meloo.n re taara phaLiyaa maa.n pag nahi.n meloo.n
* mhaare paalavDe ba.ndhaayo jashodaa no jaayo
* chhanoo.n re chhapnoo.n ka.nii thaay nahi.n
* navi te vahu naa haath maa.n rumaal
* taari baa.nki paaghalDii nu.n phumtu re
* hu.n to phoolDaa viNvaa gai'ti
* peeyar ne peepaLe thi aavyoo.n paarevDoo.n
* peepLaa ni neeche
* maare te supDe daaNo ne
* morli veraN thai re
* dham dhamak dham dham dham saa.mbelu
These are probably folk songs adapted for films or for non-film
releases. I suspect most of them are by AV. All of them are
nicely sung by Asha.
* pa.nthvaar paachaa aavo (film Gunsundari music AV)
Geeta Dutt :
==========
Probably sang some songs in the 50s-early 60s range. Charming as
usual !
* albelo phool
* maaroo.n man eklu.n naache re
* mune keD kaa.nTo vaagyo
* laal ra.ng naa lheriyaa (with Mukesh)
* o bhabhi tame thoDaa-thoDaa thaaO varNaagi (film Gunsundari music AV)
A cute song about a "nanad" advising her "bhabhi" to be more
modern ! In those days, wearing a fancy sari and high-heel shoes
and not wearing a bindi the size of a 25p coin was the extent to
which modernism went :) Geeta has poured just the right amount of
playfulness into this number.
* taaLiO naa taale gori garbe (film Mangalphera music DD?)
* raakh na ramakDaa (with DD. film Mangalphera music DD?)
The tune is identical to 'tora manvaa kyoon ghabraaye re' from
Sadhana (music NDutta). Which one came first ? I personally like
the duet (Guj) version more. That may be because I have known the
version longer !
* aaj maari naNadi e mheNu.n maaryu.n (film Gunsundari music AV)
Suman Kalyanpur :
===============
* raati raati paarevaa ni joD
* me.n to veNu ne saa.mbhaLi
* naagar na.ndji naa laal
* maaroo.n jhaa.njhariyu.n khovaayu.n
* jesal kari le vichar (film Jesal Toral music AV)
A very nice tune sung admirably by Suman. Great song overall.
Other female singers :
====================
* koi maLe meLe jai ne (Vani Jairam)
* hu.n to aNajaaNi (Krishan Kalle)
* mane saav re sonaa nu.n tu.n beDlu.n (Kamal Barot)
* rasiya re (Kamal B)
* maaru.n naam paaDyu.n (Kamal B)
Was Kamal Barot a native Gujarati speaker ?
* jhule maaro hi.nchko (Rajkumari + Habib Wali Mohammad !)
Mukesh :
======
As far as Gujarati songs are concerned, he seems to be the most
prolific of all the Hindi male singers. He does have some diction
problems but he covers it up for the most part.
* pa.nkhiDaa ne aa pinjaroo.n
We begin with his best known Gujarati song. Composed by AV.
Poignant lyrics are Mukesh's forte. In this particular song, he
sounds more sad than whiny. (hope SJ/RK fans are listening :))
* maaru.n man mohi gayu.n
* chalyaaj karoo.n chhu.n
* o neel gagan na pa.nkheru
* chalya gayaa aa.nkho thi aa.nkho chaar kari ne
* dilruba dilruba
* aavo to ye saaru.n na aavo to ye saaru.n
* najar ne kahi do ke nirkhe na evu.n
* najar na jaam chhalkaavi ne chaalya (film Akhand Saubhagyavati)
* mane taari yaad sataave
* bhamraa sarkhu.n maaru.n manDu.n
* aapNe sahu e hartaa-phartaa
* preetDi baa.ndhtaa re manDaa
* have prabhu avtaar lyo to
* maitribhaav nu.n pavitra jharNu.n
* maaraa bhoLaa dil no
* mhaataab sam madhuro
* sanam jo tu.n bane gul to
* amar jyoti
* jaaNo jigar no miTho pyaar
* have tane jaataa joi
The above songs range from okay to good. Unfortunately, I don't
remember the details. I would have to subject myself to more of
Mukesh's voice in order to comment on the songs individually :)
Manna Dey :
=========
* jaag ne jaadvaa
This is a Narsinh Mehta bhajan. Lovely rendition by Manna. MD is
perhaps AV.
* ha.nslo pi.njre puraaNo
* raheshe aa mane maari musibat ni
* pa.nkhiO e kalshor karyo
* laagi re lagan piya tori
* hu tu tu tu tu
Cannot tell the last two are Gujarati songs from the mukhDa :)
Mohammed Rafi :
=============
* kahu.n chu.n jawaani ne paachhi vaLi jaa
* divaso judai naa jaay chhe
* bhoole chooke maLe to mulaakaat maa.ngshu.n
These few songs seem to be decent. Not heard anything
extraordinary in this bin.
Talat :
=====
* sukaani jaa tu.n mane naav
* chaDhyaa aNmol kishti par
Mahendra Kapoor :
===============
* aaj ni ghaDi chhe raLiyaamNi
* dhooNi re dhakhaavi beli (film Jesal Toral music AV)
Like the Suman song from Jesal Toral, this song is very good. It
seems to have some folk influence.
Once again I request you to try and fill in the p-stats !
Comments are welcome as usual.
Thanks.

A masterpiece! It's difficult to tell whether the 'dharani' (earth) is showered by
'chandani' or the honey dripping from Latabai's voice!

Latabai's first Gujarati song, composed by Purushottam Upadhyay. Agree with comments.

Superb lyrics by late Harindra Dave. MD is Dilip Dholakia. Flute piece accentuates, as you
aptly put it, "the rather sombre mood"...
>
> * na na nahi.n aavoo.n
Another one penned by Harindra Dave. MD here is P. Upadhyay. Very typical P.U.
composition, with each phrase appropriately set to tune, e.g., "thaak laage" (feeling
tired).

I love this song. I would venture to say that MD is AV.
> * raheshe aa mane maari musibat ni
> * pa.nkhiO e kalshor karyo
> * laagi re lagan piya toriMD is Avinash Vyas. The same song has also been sung by Hansa Dave, set to a different
tune by Kshemu Divetia.
> * hu tu tu tu tuThis one is written by Avinash Vyas, composed by Gaurang Vyas. In fact GV's first
recorded song!
I also like another Manna Dey song by AV - "vijaladi re...aam varasi ne haalya javaay
nahin...". Super orchestration by GV. (I would like to point out that after mid-sixties,
most of AV's songs were arranged by GV).
>
> Mohammed Rafi :

These two (and probably the next one too) are composed by Purushottam Upadhyay.
Interesting anecdote for the last one: Rafisaab was given the deposit for this song. PU
invited Mohd. Rafi to one of his concerts and he then sang this ghazal just before the
intermission in his inimmitable style. Rafisaab was so moved by his rendition that he went
to PU during intermission and returned the deposit, telling him that he would not be able
to do justice to the ghazal the way PU did. PU convinced him that if anybody could, MR was
the only one. Rafisaab went on to sing this eventually and we got an immortal song!
BTW, I have heard PU sing this and I tend to agree with Rafisaab!

Thanks for reminding lot of good songs...I haven't heard some of them...Please post any
info on how to get these albums.
Regards,
Pranav
wasn't there a gujarati song, that went like "hu.n amadaavaadi rikshaa
vaalo, nav so navaanu nambar vaalo..."
I'd appriciate if someone can tell me the rest of the lyrics of this song.
I'm not 100% sure, but it's a Mukesh's song.
Thanks.

Hi
I just ran into this one ! It is an AV song from "maa-baap". And the singer
is (surprise surprise !) KK. It is a below-average song. As is the other KK
song for AV from "moTaa ghar ni vahu" - can't remember the mukhaDa, except
that this song also has the word "amdaavaad" in it.
C
ps - btw, the mukhaDa of the song you mention is "hu.n amdaavaad no...". It
has been picturised on Asrani, who is presumably the hero of the movie.
