Hello RMICers/RMIMers,

Can anyone help with lyrics to this Sant Tukaram abhang (tune composed
by Ram Phatak, sung by Bhimsen Joshi)? The only site I've managed to
locate this on seems to have errors.

Thanks in advance,

Sanjeev

This looks identical to the version I saw online. Comparing it to the
sung rendition yields some discrepancies - can anyone comment on this?

Hi Sanjeev,

You might want try going to Tukaram.com. The time I was on there they
had an online version of the entire Tukaram Gatha in Marathi an online
index. It is in PDF form and looks a critical edition of this work.
I have found all the Tukaram Abhangas that Bhimsen has sung for
Shrinivas Khale and Ram Pathak.

On a somewhat related note....does anyone know the raga in which
Bhimsen sang the abhang under discussion? Secondly does anyone know
raga for the abhang sung by Bhimsen entited 'Sagunachi Shej
Nirrgunachi Bhav"

Hope you find what you are looking for....
Sandip

Small correction.

It is Ram Phatak. In fact I happened to be reading Ram Phatak's
autobiography today, "Maazi Swarayatra", interesting book in Marathi.

Sanjeev,

Here it goes:

paavalo p.ndharii vaikunTha bhavan | dhanya aaji din
soniyaachaa ||1||

paavalo p.nDharii aan.nd gajare | vaajatiil ture sh.nkha
bherii ||dhru||

paavalo p.nDharii kshema aali.nganii | s.nta yaaa sajjanii nivavile ||
2||
paavalo p.nDharii paara naahii sukhaa | bheTalaa haa sakhaa
maayabaap ||3||
paavalo p.nDharii yerajhaar khu.nTalii | maaulii voLalii
premapaanhaa ||4||
paavalo p.nDharii aapule maaher | naahii savasaar tukaa mhaNe ||5||

I have transcribed from http://tukaram.com/pages/gatha.asp site and it
is abhang #3884. Contrary to normal practice, dhru is second stanza
on tukaram.com I have not heard the record myself so I don't know if
that is how it is sung. Can you clarify this please?

Hope this will help you.

cheers,
Subhash

Bhimsen Joshi's rendition starts with the first stanza.

Thanks very much to several RMIM/RMICers for your response. I think
it's fair to say the song is loosely based on Raga (Mishra) Bhairavi.
Bhimsen Joshi's aalaaps in the last stanza are a distinct pointer in
this direction.

Cheers,

Sanjeev
