Satish Kalra - Forever in our memories

Our dear friend is no more. I have been in touch with Guri for the
better part of today. Kalra saaheb's last few moments in this world
passed without prolonged pain or discomfort.
I know I speak for the RMIM family. Our prayers and support will
always be with Saroj-ji and the whole family. Their strength and
forbearance have been at once gut-wrenching and inspirational.
I would not presume to describe the depth and extent of Kalra saaheb's
knowledge and his passion for the art. That is a thesis unto itself,
and has come to be an RMIM axiom for eternity. But it went way beyond
knowledge and passion. His style was unassuming and simple. He
spontaneously exuded a brand of humility that can only come from
benign self-assuredness, total command over the subject, and true
inner strength. In our thoughts, he will always remain witty, funny,
kind, generous and altogether uplifting.
It seems difficult to have humility and majesty all in one persona.
But that, Kalra saaheb, is how we will remember you. You have left an
immortal trail of goodwill. And you probably never truly realized the
oft-healing nature of the things you said and the things you wrote, on
and off this forum. Your extended RMIM family will continue to think
and talk about you.

Kalra ji has become an inseperable part of our lives over the years.

I cannot muster up the words to write an obituary at this point, all I
can say is that RMIM will never be the same again. As a group we have
lost something very precious. And for all of us who had the good
fortune to recieve the abundant love and affection that he held within
him, our lives have also become poorer today.

Sorry to hear shocking news of demise of Shri Kalra , a treasure of
information. The circle of Music years of yesteryear is slowly getting
smaller. His demise will be leave a void very hard almost impossible
to fill.
I am sure his presence will be welcomed by likes of RCBoral,
Naushad,Madan Mohan etc in heaven.
May God grant him eternal peace to deoparted sould and corage to his
family to bear the loss.

It is a big shock to me! I thought about him a lot of times in the
past 4-5 days, but, strangely, I felt very uncomfortable about it.
Now I know why. May his soul rest in peace (Amen). I have my deepest
sympathy for his family. I have saved his last email to me, and now I
will preserve it forever.
Oh, I am running out of words so quickly. All I can say that now
whenever I will think about Shankar-Jaikishan or ask on RMIM something
about their songs, I will always miss Kalraji. He shared so much of
his own memories of those days. Now those memories will remain with
me.

Because of his work in his life time he is a happy person whether he
lives or dies. He will always be with us in our thoughts.
In my initial forays on RMIM I was occassionally impertinent with him,
but he never took it to his heart. When he came to know that I was in
US, he invited me to his place. He also offered to pick-and-drop me if
I was anywhere within 400 miles of his home.
Unfortunately we could not meet. I thought may be next time... Very
devious words those... next time..
He also sent a very encouraging mail to me when I sent him my first
half baked attempt at song composition.
RMIM has lost a good human being.
May his soul reach eternal Nirvana...

I was fortunate to have the privilege of meeting Satishji in November, when he
was still in (relatively) good health. He looked frail and weak, but as we
talked about RMIM, music and movies, he seemed to gain more strength & his
spirits went up and one could see his sense of humor was still very much intact.
All too often we give all the credit to MD's for their great work. I don't know
if there is one thing that makes someone a good/great music director. I do know
though, that it needs someone who appreciates their music, with few biases,
preferences and most of all for the sheer joy of it. AB, Naushad, SDB, OPN, MM,
S-J, CR, SC, RDB, ARR and others would not be the greats that they are without
someone to appreciate them in that true spirit. That someone was Satishji. In an
era filled with gadgets when it is so much easier to simply pop in a CD/DVD to
listen to music, see a movie or to just download it on your Ipod, we tend to
forget that there were fans like him who would walk/cycle in the heat or cold to
see the movies and listen to its songs. They scrimped and saved so that they
could buy 78 rpms and LPs. They stayed up at night or got up early in the
morning to catch the shows on SLBC or Vividh Bharati. They took notes and stored
away facts in their memories that would put all the world's search engines to
shame. We can only bow our heads and thank Satishji and his generation for the
sacrifices they made to bring us these riches. For a MD is nothing without his
fans and Satishji represented the best of that.
Ever the generous soul and despite his ill health, he had prepared a compilation
of 2 CDs of some of his favourite songs that he gave me during my visit in
November. When I protested, he laughed and said they weren't for me but for my 2
year old son--something he said he wanted to pass on to the next generation.
All I can say is, the next generation need only google his name. He has left us
way more than 2 CD's in terms of knowledge and love for us all.
RMIM is going to be poorer in his absence but he has left us richer in ways I
cannot even begin to count.

Having interacted with him on various yahoogroups like SKS/SJ/Lata/
Mukesh, I would say that he was adored and respected all over. Though
RMIM was his first love, he was quite active in other music discussion
groups also. I recall having read his post in Lata's yahoogroup just a
few weeks back.

I would like to share a personal memory of Satishji. Though I had been
active on RMIM for a few years, I had not met any fellow RMIMer in person.
The occasion came in the summer of 2003 when I decided to drive down to New
Jersy to attend a East Coast meet held at Abhay's house. We arrived a little
bit early on Friday evening and other attendees started showing up few at a
time. Introductions were taking place when another group arrived. After few
minutes, a somewhat bigger man from the group came towards me. I was
standing in one corner of the room, still feeling a bit inhibited. He asked
me 'Are you Anant'? When I nodded, he said, ' I am Satish Kalra'. I was
about to extend my hand and say something lame like 'Nice to meet you', he
held me in a tight bear hug such that some of my bones creaked and said
'Aakhir mil hi gaye yaar'. The scene wouldn't have looked out of place in
any Manmohan Desai 'lost and found' film. That is how he felt about
everybody who shared his love and passion for the golden age of Hindi Film
Music. They were all his lost brothers and sisters and relatives. I am sure
every RMIMer who is lucky to have met him share this feeling.
I am looking out of my window as I am writing this. It is a beautiful
Christmas morning in Ottawa. After a record snowfall, it is all pure and
white where ever one can see. And a bright sun is shining on it from
perfectly blue sky. God seems very happy and why not. He has just got a
great company.

I just cannot describe how I feel about such a generous, knowledgable,
caring and affctionate person. Last few years we have been constantly
talking.
One thing which amazed me was his cheerful attitude - no complaints,
none whatsoever. He always cared for me so much.. If I was sick, he would
constantly call to see how I was doing.
I can never forget when he called me from hospital on Diwali day to
wish me Happy Diwali. That was the last lengthy conversation we had
And what an amazing family he leaves behind. Sarojji is just such
a wonderful and affectionate person.

Virjee and Saroj jee. We thank God for every moment we spent with
them. He was the elder brother we did not have. And, very few would
know that he passed away on the same date, December 24, and at about
the same time, 5:55PM, as our father (Guri s and mine) 12 years ago.
We must have a divine connection with Satish Virjee and Saroj jee.
Satish Virjee will always live in hearts and prayers.

to say that Satish-ji always liked communicating with RMIM-ers and it
would be great if we asked him - health permitting, of course - to
join us over the phone for any session of the Meet. We wrote to Satish-
ji inviting him to join us at a time of his choosing should his health
permit it - hoping against hope that he would be able to make it!
Though that could not happen, his name did come up at the Meet and he
was remembered by many attendees, especially those who had met him at
previous Meets.
We have never met Satish-ji, but our sporadic exchanges online and
over email have always been enriching and enjoyable. You'll be much
missed by all those whose lives you touched, Satish-ji!

The RMIM family has lost a wonderful man. I was privileged to have met
him at Neha's for the 2005 Meet but felt I already knew him well after
several e-mail exchanges that happened earlier, ever since he invited
my mother and I to stay with him for a few days - no casual invitation
this, for he sent train details, route maps and convenient flight
details. Recently detailed discussions were in progress with him about
listing 78 rpm versions of well-known songs that differed in some way
from well-heard versions. He knowledge of this as always was
tremendous yet he was self-effacingly modest. It's painful to reflect
that on RMIM we will no longer see those compact nuggets of wisdom
followed by the 'Happy Listenings' signature.

unfair means to get filmfare awards, just to provoke him. But he
quietly explained "vo kyaa hai kii LP ne pahale ye sab shuruu kiyaa.

Kalraji's departure to eternal abode is a great loss to RMIM.
I, however, consider it a personal loss.
He belonged to such small number of of persons whom I
really liked.

The very first time I met Satish-ji, it seemed to me like I had known
him for ever. I was instantly drawn to his magnetic personality and he
embraced me as a part of an extended family that all music-lovers were
to him.
He was simultaneously child-like in his enthusiasm but mature in his
magnanimity. He would liven up those quizzes (which he usually managed
to win!) with his good-hearted bickering over a point but would as
easily recommend a judgment in favor of his opponents. He was
simultaneously passionate in his love for the golden era but open-
minded about newer music. He was probably one of the first old-timers
to say nice things about the post-90s music.
The zeal with which he held his Farmaishi sessions at the RMIMeets was
astounding. I remember asking him for a Ladki Sahyadri Ki song prior
to one of these programs. He could not find the song and seemed
genuinely sad about that. A whole year later, at the next Meet, he
again apologized for not having found the song! The song has since
been released. Each time I listen to it, I remember Satish-ji. Now if
I go back to that song it is sure to bring a lump to my throat.
His writings on RMIM provided pictuersque windows into an era long
gone. His razor-sharp memory and narrative style lent a uniqely life-
like characteristic to his posts. Those not fortunate enough to have
lived through the golden era could re-live the magic of that age
vicariously through his articles.
I will always cherish my memories of Satish-ji and can only imagine
the void he has left in his family. My heart goes out to Saroj-ji and
the rest of the family in these difficult times. Hope they find the
strength to cope with their loss.

The RMIM family is poorer today - it has lost a loved parent. I had
the good fortune of meeting Satish-ji only twice in person over the
last 10 years, and numerous times virtually after that, be it on RMIM
or personal email. As was rightly noted earlier, he had that rare and
uncanny ability of inducing a feeling of warmth and familiarity within
a minute of meeting him... and my first encounter with him was no
different than what every RMIM-er who's met him has experienced. In
many ways, he was an embodiment of the spirit of the RMIM family, and
its most loving mainstay. As long as RMIM is around, he will never be
gone.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Saroj-ji and his family. Thank you
Satish-ji, for everything.

Kalra saab's death is indeed a very sad news. I was never fortunate
enough to meet him. But his deep knowledge and his articles always
inspired and left me in awe of this great person!
Thank you Kalra saab for everything! We will always remember you with
a warmth in our hearts!

That is so true. Kalra-ji's contributions, rounded off
with the stylish 'Happy Listenings' signature, were
eagerly sought and have helped RMIM archives become
the treasure trove that they are.
It was the good fortune of many of us RMIMers to have
known him. The combination of encyclopaedic knowledge
worn so lightly, generosity and gentle nature made him
very special. Meeting him in person added to the picture
because in flesh he exactly represented the persona
which his erudite and humane emails and RMIM posts
projected. As several posters have noted, RMIM will
never be the same again.
He will be missed terribly but his memories will
continue to enrich our lives.

A very sad news for all of us. Words are indeed short of describing
the magnanimity and contributions of Kalra-ji on this forum. I met him
only once nine years ago at the 1999 RMIM-meet in New Jersey and ever
since he had been a friend. Over the past six years when my
participation on the RMIM-forum became a bit constrained, he was
continuously in touch with me over email sharing his immense
knowledge, and, as he has done for almost every RMIM-er - sharing his
collection as one would with a close friend or family member. As
others have already said, he exuded a unique combination of humility
and knowledge, childishness and maturity, which endeared him to one
and all. Kalra-ji will be dearly missed and frequently remembered on
RMIM.

Sad to hear this. Kalra-ji is one RMIM-er, with whom I shared such a
relationship, without any personal communication, that I wanted to see
him in person.

after a long gap, he had sent me a very sweet personal email a few
weeks ago.

Before I knew it we were good friends. Satish uncle and Saroj aunty
were there with me every step of the way in my ongoing battle with
cancer, when I could no longer drive myself to hospital, he would
drive me to my chemo appts at times and bring me lovely bananas which
is all I could eat on days when the effects of chemo would put me in a
world of pain.Both he and aunty looked out for my my parents by
offering them their unstinting friendship, I am very simply at a loss
for words. I take solace in the fact that I was able to say good bye
to him just before I left for India in December. I know there is a
special place in heaven for you uncle.
