Hi friends

There was one occassion when I heard the interview of Kishoreda in
which he was talking about SDB..and I really wondered what were SDB's
thoughts on Kishore !! and here is what I get....

I received one Anmol Khazana from one of my dear friend....in that I
got to read an interview of SD, in which SD speaks about Kishore ( and
Dev ) !!!! The interview is in Marathi...it came up in the Magazine's
November issue 1987...the actual interview was given
in 1966 to that same Magazine, in their Diwali Special of 1966. I would
be more than happy to translate it later on, to all of you ( or to
those interested ). Maybe some of my Marathi-understanding friends can
help me out to save my time ?

Some excerpts from that 1966 issue ( so many things to learn about SDB
and Kishore in such kind of interviews !! ) :

kalpaktene khulavla. Dev-Vahidane ya gaanyachya veli ekmekanna itki

chitrapat sangeetasaathi ghetla tevha tevha Kishorechach awaaz
vaaparla. Pan Kishore aaplya laharipanacha malahi prasaad deun gelay.
Tyaala gaanyapeksha abhinayachi hukki aalyavar to gaanyasaathi
aksharshaha shodhun saapdena tevha mala nailazaane Raficha awaaz
vaaprava laagla.

"Guide" saathi 10 gaani hoti. Tyaatil avghya ekach - "Gaata Rahe" ya
gaanyasaathi Kishore upalabdha zhaala. Baakichi gaani me Rafi ( Tere
Mere Sapne, Din Dhal Jaaye, Kya Se Kya Ho Gaya ), Manna Dey ( He Raam
Hamaare Raamchandra ) yaanchyakadun gaaun ghetli. Don gaani ( Wahaan
Kaun Hai Tera, Allah Megh De Paani De ) me swatahach gaayili.

Me Devsaathi Kishorepramaane Rafi, Manna Dey, Hemant Kumar yaanche hi
awaaz gaanyasaathi vaaparle. Pan Kishoreshivaay phakta Rafichaach awaaz
Devla Yogya Tharla. Mandy Burmanchya "Manzil" madhye me Devsaathi Manna
Deychya awaazacha vaapar kela hota tar "Jaal" madhye Devsaathi me
Hemant Kumarcha awaaz ghetla hota. Ya "Jaal" madhil Hemant Kumarna
Devsaathi Gaayilela "Ye Raat..Sun Ja Dil Ki Daastaan" he gaana gaazla
khara pan padyavar hech gaane Devchya tondi khatkat hote. Kaaran Hemant
Kumarcha awaaz kahisa jaad, bhaardast aslyane Devchya "gulaabi"
vyaktimatvala to shobhla nahi. Mhanunach me nantar Dev saathi Hemant
Kumarcha awaaz ghetla nahi.

"Navketan" chya "Baazi" saathi me prathamach Kishorecha awaaz Devsaathi
ghetla. Tyaatil ek yugalgeet tyaane Geeta Dutt barobar gaayile.
Devsaathi tyaane "Dandara Dandara" he vinodi bolgeet hi gaayile.

Kishorechya awaazatil vividhata, lavchikta vilakshan. Tyaamulech ha
kotehi gaana sahajtene gaau shakto ashi maajhi khaatri pakki zhali.
Tyaachyasaathi me udatya chaalichi, paaschimaatya suravatichi,
anandadaayi, karunraspradhaan, raadaari ashi anek prakaarchi gaani
gaaun ghetli.

Kishorechya gaayanatil harhunnari kasabamule me chaanglaach prabhavit
zhalo. Mhanunach me "Aath Din" saathi tyaacha awaaz nirmatyachya
virodhala na jumaanta vaaparla. Kishore tyaveli prasiddhila aala
navhta. Pan tyaache gaayanache cheez karave ya hetune me tyaala sandhi
det rahilo. "Aath Din" nantar A.V.M. chya "Bahaar" saathi me tyaala
muddaam ghetle.

Me dilelya sandhicha Kishorene manapaasun upayog karun ghetla. To
prarambhi Saigalchya awaazachi nakkal kari. Kaaran Saigal tyaacha
aadarsh gaayak hota. Pan me tyaala "nakkal" chaalnaar nahi, swatahachya
awaazache vegle vaishishtyach pudhe yenyaas upayogi tharel asa salla
dila, navhe bajaavlech. Tevha tyaane aaplya veglya vaishishtyacha shodh

"Khwaab Ho Tum" yaansaarkhya gaanyaat Kishore ne Devsaathich manapasun
swar otun bahaar aanli. Kishorela Lata saarkhi lajawaab gaayika barobar
gaayla asel tevha vilakshan mood yeyi. "Gaata Rahe Mera Dil" he ekach
udaharan tyaachi saaksha tharavi.

"Aye Meri Topi Palatke Aa", "Denewaala Jab Bhi Deta Poora Chhappar
Phaadke Deta", "Chaahe Koyi Khush Ho" kinwa "Duniya Ke Bazaar Mein Apna
Band Bajaaye Ja" Yaansaarkhi Devsaathi khelkar, halkiphulki gaani

Kishorecha awaaz ghetla. Pan gaani gaazli ti phakta Kishore-Dev ya
gaayak-nat jodichich !

Kishorecha ek atyant changla gun mhanje tyaachi gaanyaachi samaj. Mala
nemka kay havay he keval don-chaar oleet saangitle ki to mala have tase
gaaun denaar ! Pan hyaach guni Kishorecha ek avagun mhanje laharipana.
Tya paayi tyaana swatahacha ani paryayana
chitrapatsangeetacha phaar nuksaan kelay. Tyaachya laharicha kaahi
bharavsa naslyaane anek nirmaate, sangeetkaar tyaala taalu laagle.
Kishore mage padat gela. Spardheche mahatva olakhlech nahi. Tyaachya

kaahi upayog zhala nahi. Devsaathi maatra tyaachi lahar to kaabut
thevat dhaavat gaayla yenaar ! Kishorene madhyantari gaaychach nahi asa
ved dharle hote..."Teen Deviyaan" tyaveli maajhya haati hota. Ani hi
lahari swaari eke divshi achanak maajhya ghari hazar jhaali. Kishore
mhanala "Dada, Devsaathi meech gaanaar ahe"

Me mhatle " Tu tar gaana sodlay mhantaat. Ani tuzha bharavsa kay?"
Tevha paay dharun mhanala, "Dada, attachya atta gaau ka bola?"

Kishoremadhla te baalman paahun maajhya dolyaatun ashru vaahu laagle...

Let me give you the gist:

- Kishore is a great singer who could capture the spirit of the song
perfectly. His voice was suitable for all kinds of songs.
- Kishore was the perfect choice for Dev Anand; no other male singer,
expect Rafi to a limited extent, suited Dev. "gaataa rahe meraa dil" is
a perfect example: Dev himself seems to be singing. The song is the
greatest Lata-Kishore duet.
- Thanks to Kishore's obsession with acting, he was often not available
for song recordings; on these occasions, SDB had to make do with Rafi
(and occasionally Manna De and Hemant Kumar). For "Guide", too, KK was
available only for the duet and SDB had to use Rafi and Manna De for the
other songs.
- Kishore had declared he would not sing. Then, when "Teen Deviyan" was
in the works, he landed up at SDB's place and insisted he wanted to sing
the songs and was even ready to record them right there.

Hmm. I wonder ... does the original Marathi line mentioning
Rafi in comparison with Kishore really say what the latter half
of your translation says? The line in question is this --

"Pan Kishoreshivaay phakta Rafichaach awaaz Devla Yogya Tharla."

Now, I don't claim to know Marathi at all, but this simply
seems to be saying,

par Kishore ke siwaaye sirf Rafi hii kii aawaaz Dev ke liye
yogya thii

(unless I am quite mistaken in thinking that 'phakta' means
the same thing as the Urdu 'faqat').

Which makes inquiring minds wonder: where did you get that
(uncharitable) bit about "to a limited extent" from? In the
original article, Hemant Kumar's is the only voice I found
SDB comparing unfavorably to Kishore's (inasmuch as its
suitability to Dev's face).

BTW, *all* the other translations posted in this thread
seem to have skipped translating this Rafi v/s Kishore
sentence, piquing my curiosity considerably.

You are quite right in the context of that sentence, Ravindra. I wasn't
attempting a line by line translation but just trying to capture the
sentiments expressed in the article. The overall pitch of the article is
that Kishore suited Dev best; even this sentence starts with "other than
Kishore...". The "...to a limited extent" was my interpretation, not
SDB's exact words.
