A Tribute to a Song: jiivan me.n tuu Daranaa nahii.n (Khote Sikkay, 1974)

love for the splendid Kishore Kumar solo 'jiivan me.n tuu Daranaa
nahii.n'. That this song is highly inspiring would be an
understatement. I just cannot explain the uplifting feeling that I
get every time I listen to this song. Kishore Kumar’s singing is
simply stunning, especially his high-pitched calls in each stanzas –
‘jiinaa hai to pyaare tuu la.Danaa zin.dagii se’. This particular
line is truly sensational for its message, meaning, and magnificence,
and I am grateful to Majrooh for penning it. RD Burman on his part
created a thrilling tune for the song and never repeated it. I think
he mostly composed memorable tunes for songs that inspired him for one
reason or the other – and then never repeated them. Feroz Khan
delivered an excellent performance in the song and the rest of the
film.
By the way, film is well-made and has a fairly tight screenplay,
thanks to good editing by B.S. Gladd who later won a Filmfare Award
for his editing in Badalte Rishtey (1978). Besides Feroz Khan, a few
others, namely Rehana Sultan, Narendranath, and Danny also contributed
decent performances. In a scene Ranjeet wonders, “gaa.Nv me.n jaakar
ham apanii maut ko daawat de.nge kya?” Danny answers, “maut daawat
dene se nahii.n aati, balki bin bulaaye aatii hai.” I loved this
line. The film looks a lot like Sholay (1975), but comparing it with
the legendary Ramesh Sippy blockbuster would be unfair. To its
credit, the film came a year earlier than Sholay and did a decent
business. I would be curious to know if Ramesh Sippy was inspired
even slightly by this film as well (even though he planned and
visualized the film in 1971-72). Does anyone have any tidbit
regarding this to share?
One more question: the print quality of the song on YouTube link is
truly brilliant. If anyone saw this film on DVD, would you please let
me know the DVD publisher who owns this print or equally good print?
My DVD (by Music India store at Jackson Heights, NY) has a real bad
print and is surely an illegal copy – I am going to throw it away
unless someone wants it. I bought 8 DVDS from them for $52 (including
shipping) and, believe me, all these DVDs have darkish print - often
you cannot see anything. I am going to throw all of them away. Don't
