As you know, I reduced the maximum number of selectable scores to 12
from the normal 15, based on comparatively lower output of Roshan. As
usual, pariticipants were also free to provide up to 15 additional
songs from albums not selected in their album list.
Here are the results. Feel free to comment or add your own analysis, or
even ask for a specific data, if I have missed any. Corrections are
also welcome.
All percentage scores below have been rounded to the nearest integer.
The results will also be available soon on the web at:

Scores (in percentage of participants)
======================================
There was tough competition for the first three spots. Eventually, and
not surprisingly, Barsat Ki Raat clinches the top spot. Taj Mahal is
just one vote short and at the second place, followed by Chitralekha,
another two votes behind. These three were in the list of over 85%
participants. Top ten are interestingly divided between early 50s (3
albums), early to mid 60s (5 albums) and later (2 albums).
The number denotes percentage of pariticipants who selected that score.

voted for Lata's version ? :)

Can't believe Bharat Bhooshan won. Guess it must be all those qawwalis
and Sahir.
And what about Pradeep Kumar's Taj Mahal.
Bharat Bhooshan acted in probably some of the best Musicals
of HF - Baiju Bawara, Basant Bahar, Mirza Ghalib and Barsaat Ki
Raat.
Similarly Pradeep Kumar too has his share in Best of Musicals like
Taj Mahal, Chitralekha, Anarkali and Nagin.

Irfan
1. How many of your top 12 albums made the list? I scored only 8/12.
2. How many of your 15 songs made it? And which ones? I got only
5/15.
3. Barsaat Ki Raat and/or Taj Mahal were no-brainers. :) These two
are probably his most popular soundtracks.
Happy Listenings.
Satish Kalra
Absolutely. Though I hoped against hope that "Naubahaar" would make it
there, I knew that was too much of a hope :)
But I cant digest seeing "Devar" and "Bahu begum" getting more ayes
than "Raag rang" ! *sob* !!
- Sathya
Well there are two things here.
1) Guessing what are the most popular top 12.
2) Picking your top 12.
Both these are bound to have some common tracks but they are
independent events.
I mean you won't pick your top 12 based on the fact that most people
wud pick those
top 12 right ?
Aarti (1962)
Aagosh (1953)
Anhonee (1952)
Barsaat Ki Raat (1960)
Bawre Nain (1950)
Chitralekha (1964)
Mamta (1966)
Nau Bahaar (1952)
Raag Rang (1952)
Sanskaar (1952)
Taj Mahal (1963)
Zindagi Aur Hum (1962)
songs:
raat ki mehfil suuni suuni - Noorjehan
sharabi sharabi ye saawan ka mausam - noorjehan
tera dil kahaa hai - chandni chowk
garjat barsat bheejat - Malhar
nigaahen milaane ko jii chahtaa hai - dil hi to hai
jhuum jhuum ke - coffe house
dhaani chunar mori haaye re - Madhu
apni nazar se unki nazar tak - Humlog
bahaaron ne mera chaman luutkar - Devar
ohre taal mile nadi ke jal me - Anokhi Raat
main jaagun jag soye ri aali - Rangeen Raaten
phuul chun le more baalam - Firdaus
unko apna banaake chhod diyaa - Malkin
aa jaa ai jaanevaale - chandni chowk
jhilmil taare kare ishaare - Mashuqa
And I kicked myself for not picking the ultimate Lata soother
"giit mere jagaaye sulaaye tujhe" or " tum ek baar muhabbat ka imtehaan
to lo"
or "salaam-e-hasrat qubool karlo".
I would have loved to pick Malhar, Shisham, Chandni Chowk, Dil Hi To
Hai, Rangeen Raaten etc. among my tracks.
Roshan offers so much desert island quality even though he did so few
movies !
Maybe I shud get shipwrecked with some other RMIMer who has maximum
mismatch
with my picks :) )
You and I have only 5 common soundtracks among the top 12! I knew you
would be definitely choosing Aaghosh, Zindagi Aur Hum,, Aarti, and
Chitralekha in your list. But, try as I may, I can't listen to
Chitralekha as an album - only individual songs spread on various
compilations.
Malhar, Shisham, Chandni Chowk, Dil Hi To Hai and Rangeen Raatein were
among my picks for the albums, and what melodious songs they all have.
They are enough to turn a full desert into a perennial oasis, let alone
a desert island!
But then again, To Each His Own.
Happy Listenings.
Satish Kalra
In my opinion, these movies would have done just as well with any other
actor. I believe that music was the main reason for their success.
Deepak
I got top 7. Got 10 out of 12.
Got 5 songs out of 11 submitted. I thought
I had submitted 15. If I had submitted
15 songs, my score would have been 7 out of 15.

Thats a fairly high common-ness :) My other two being "Malhaar" and
Sheesham".
>From the songs, only two in common though :
> aa jaa ai jaanevaale - chandni chowk
> jhilmil taare kare ishaare - Mashuqa
I completely forgot the "Maalkin" beauty ...
> unko apna banaake chhod diyaa - Malkin
And I dont know how I could have missed Talat's "mere khayaalo.n me
aake gale lagaa jaa mujhe" !!
Some of other songs in my list :
dil bhii teraa ham bhii tere
darde dil tuu hii bataa
aa phir se mere pyaar kii
bataa do koii kaun galii gaye shyaam
- Sathya
My list was the same except I picked Anokhi Raat, Taksaal and Dil Hi To Hai
instead of Anhonee, Mamta and Sanskaar. I didn't realize till I was almost
done with my 15 songs that I had left out Anhonee! If 15 soundtracks had
been allowed, I would have added Anhonee, Rangeen Raaten and Shisham or
maybe Mamta or Sanskaar or...:-)

Ditto. And I wish I had a spot for "Chand takhta hai idhar" and "nigahon
main yeh mastiyan kyon." Actually, while I obviously like some more than
others, I would be happy to have most Roshan songs for company on a desert
island.
Shalini
My 'score' was as under :
I got 10 out of 12 in the Albums category. I didn't select
"Aarti" and "RaagRang". Instead, my vote went to "Hum Log"
and "Bheegi Raat". The last named was 14th on the list. But,
in a way, it was disappointing that only 3 or 4 people picked
"Hum Log".
In the individual songs category, 7 of my selections finished
in the top 15. Maybe, I can add songs from "Bheegi Raat",
"Bahu Begum", "Devar" and "Mamta" too, since I chose these
films in the Albums category. From "Taksaal", my vote went to
"Aaye sajna hamaar". Apart from the "Jhoom jhoom ke" number
from "Coffee House", I selected the other Geeta Dutt song too,
"Is mehfil men aana bach ke". These two are amongst my all-time
favourites. Years back, I was fortunate to get hold of the
78 rpm record, where both these songs were on the same disk.
Thanks and kudos are due to Shri Jain for such a painstaking
job.

Well, we also need to know how many among the participants have heard
all songs
of Hum Log. Such polls are definetely skewed towards popular tracks.
While we are on Roshan I am reminded of an amusing incident.
One RMIMer had a few visitors. They were going thru the RMIMers music
collection and
started discussing about various composers. They talked abt SJ, Naushad
and so on when one person said " actually I like Roshan among all of
those". The RMIMers respect for him was about to go a few notches up
when he said " he still gives good music" :)
Read your last sentence again (specially "when").
All those Rip Van Winkle RMIMers :)
AJ
he = Rajesh Roshan.
Yes !!!
A few interesting observations on Results..
1. Barsaat Ki Raat got the top spot but none of its song could make it
to the list of top favourite songs.. Quite unbelievable!!! how did
songs like 'na to kaarvaan ki talaash', 'zindagi bhar nahin bhoolegi'
'garajat barsat' from the top album couldn't find a place in the
personal favourites list? BKR seems like NewZealand team wining the
champions trophy without any stars.. How come No takers for the all
time great qawwali 'Na to kaarvaan ki talaash hai'
2. Similarly the sons from Silver Medalist 'Tajmahal' and the bronze
medal winner 'Chitralekha' are missing from the top 15 song list
(Sansaar se bhaage phirte ho, Kahe tarsaaye, ai ri jaane na doongi,
chha gaye baadal and the BIGGEST LOOSER of the Poll 'Man Re Tu Kaahe
Na Dheer Dhare' SIMPLY UNBELIEVABLE!!!... Incidently the song was
selected as all time No. 1 Song recently in Outlook Poll)
What could be the reason of this mismatch? 'Koi Jaane Na!!!'
2. Only two films Soorat aur Seerat and Madhu had more than one song
(two songs each) in top 15 songs list but while Soorat aur Seerat
featured at the bottom in the albums, Madhu is not there in the list..
3 Barsaat ki 'Raat' featured at the Top of Album list while 'Bheegi
Raat' and 'Anokhi Raat' featured at the top of songlist..
My all time favourite songs of Roshan saab are two of his simpler
compositions, 'Bahut diya dene wale ne tujhko' and 'Oh re taal mile'...
just another roshan fan
Pavan Jha
Pavan,
All your questions/concerns have one simple answer:
The songs selected were *in addition* and *exclusive* to the selected
albums and participants were not permitted to select the songs from an
album if they had selected that album in their album list. So to answer
your individual questions:
1) Those who selected BKR as an album could not have selected any songs
from it. And as you know over 90% selected it as an album.
2) Same thing worked for Taj Mahal and Chitralekha.
Second 2) The reverse of the above happened for Madhu and SAS. Most
people did not include the album in their list but wanted individual
songs from these.
3) Exactly.
Vinay
But how does it make sense then? The favourite "desert island" song
list becomes meaningless as on the whole You cant find a correlation
between the album and the song list... Take the example of "Bheegi
Raat", the song "dil jo na keh saka' finds a top place in the song list
and the film too finds a place in the top album list.. but does it lead
to any conclusion?.. Think of using this survey(kshan) as collecting
not only DI albums but also DI Songs for an artist.. Or may be you can
use the TOP 15 list for the songs from the films not chosen even once
in the poll...
or may be I am missing a point!!!
bahut diya dene walon ne mujhko
bheje me na samaay to kya keeje.. :)
Pavan
>Think of using this survey(kshan) as collecting

A better sampling of collective desert island choice wud be this.
Choose the
top 15 tracks from the poll. Among the top individual songs choose the
ones that don't belong to the top 15 tracks.

1 Coffee House's Jhoom Jhoom Ke Jaam Choom Ke, is not a Roshan
composition. It is a well known Spanish instrumental number. Yes,
one can and should give full credit to Geeta Dutt for excellent
rendering
2 Missing from the Songs from Lesser Known Films is CHANDINI CHOWK's
number: Zameen Bhi Wohi Hai, Wohi Aasman, Magar Ab Wo Dilli Ki
Galiyan Kahan, quite difficult to sing, but Rafi Saheb made it
happen
Agreed to sound quality of this song on the LP / Rafi We Remember
(2-LPs set) is bad. But still it is quite enjoyable song.
