I thought nobody else besides me and Vish (and perhaps Irfan) read
those things :)
No Prof - I am a great lover of old magazines and I do read
them .
There are very interesting and note worthy things and I might post
some of
them for discussion and for my own clarification .
I always look for the updates on your web . Hope you will slowly post
whatever you wish to share with us . Excellent work Prof - Pl. keep it
up .
BTW - another queiry from this movie .
Yaqub and Ashraf Khan acted together in Mehbub Khan's
film Roti . Is he the same Ashraf Khan ?
There were some articles mentioning him to have
become a Sufi saint .
Warm regards ,
k
I think he is the same. There is ton of info on him in the old issues
of SIRC, which I will start posting beginning next year.
Ashraf Khan had acted in many dramas on Gujarati stage, and was called
'Saigal of Gujarati Drama'. He acted in a few RANJIT films around
1938-39. Suresh Chandvankar had written a short article on him which
was later included in a book. The article gives an impression that
Ashraf Khan's film career ended with Ranjit in 1940-41. Which begs the
question: Was Ashraf Khan of ROTI a different person? I checked with
Dr Chandvankar; he thinks he made a mistake in not mentioning Roti,
plus a few other 1940s films, in his article on Ashraf Khan. Unless
proven otherwise, I see no reason to doubt that we are talking about
only one person with that name here. The comparison with Saigal
suggests singing ability; Jnan Dutt did not do justice to it IMO, but
Anil Biswas did.
I have heard a song or two sung by Ashraf Khan for RANJIT and also 2-3
of his songs in Roti (1942). The song(s) he sang for Jnan Dutt are
utterly ordinary AFAIR, but the songs in Roti are utterly brilliant.
The chasm in quality notwithstanding, the songs were sung by the same
person; the chasm did make me wonder, though, whether it could be two
different persons with the same name.
Ashraf Khan did become a Sufi figure of note, and was known for his
spirituality. Flute player and ace composer Dinakrrao Amembal (urf D
Amel, co-md of Beete Din) was deeply affected by Ashraf Khan's
spirituality, regarded him as his guru, and a picture of Ashraf Khan
was to be seen in D Amel's room during the latter's old days around
1980.
Ashraf Khan died around 1961; I think an annual urs is marked every
year at his mazaar.

Mubarak Begum in her interview:
“This struggle continued till I met Yakub, who was making ‘Aayiye’,
the music of which was composed by Shaukat Dehlvi, who did the popular
‘Nagma’. I remember going to Eastern Studios at Worli (Mumbai), where
Allaudin, Yakub’s brother, was the recordist. And there, for the first
time, we recorded without a hitch! The song was a solo, ‘Mohe aane
lagi angrayi… aaja aaja balam’. I also sang a duet (with Lata
Mangeshkar) for the same film, ‘Aao chalein, chalein sakhi wahan’.”
How many names he had used, can be read here:
Thanks for the excellent link . Nice to know
he introduced Mubarak Begum & Suman Kalyanpur .
k
Mahesh,
Thanks for the link. Looks like the original article was by Nani with
later contributions by Rawat.
