(Apologies if you get it many times through various ng/ml).

Hello friends,

I was working on a HINDI <-> URDU transliteration software.
It is now ready and working to a level of my satisfaction
that I am not feeling shy in sharing it with you.

For a few days, I shall be testing some transliterations
myself, posting a few mails having original hindi/ urdu
text typed in it and then the hindi/ urdu generated by the
software.

Please highlight any glaring obvious mistakes. Just keep in
mind that if hindi was wrong then generated urdu will
obviously be wrong. You can also send me any words or
phrases or long text in hindi/urdu to see the
transliteration. Once the members find that it is not a
bachkanii thing, I will release it for beta testing in a
week or so, depending on the volume of bugs highlighted.

Whatever good or bad you want to say about it, that will be
very useful for me. Please do share. If you don't want to
bog the ng/ ml by such discussion, you can write direct to me.

Urdu part in the following is 100% software generated. If
mozilla/ netscape based browsers are not showing it
correctly, you might need to copy paste to some unicode
copatible software like MS Word.

Today, Sep 15 is Engineering day. Hope this sets the mood
for the day.

Regards and Thanks.

The poem written by the President of India, Shri A P J Abdul
Kalam on the ku.mbhakoNam tragedy where dozens of tiny
children got burnt alive in a fire in a school.

You mean she wrote her books before dying? Facetious
comments aside, could you provide more concrete
context to that 'since' in 'since deceased'?

Thanks for all the responses and queries that you gave on it.

In some cases, I have not replied incividually to the mails
because some queries will automatically get answered once
you try the software yourself.

It shall be released soon for beta testing.

Here is some more information about the software that will
help you in deciding whether to try it or not, and whether
it will work on your system.

History of the software:
------------------------
Sometimes ago, working under Project Afzal, I had mapped
Devanagari and Urdu alphabets to each other, and then
alphabets of all indian scripts, too.

I would have loved to add this module to Jai Hanuman ji's
takhti which had initiated me to the wonders of Unicode, but
I could not locate the source code of takhti.

Searching on the net, I came across a copyleft software
Simredo 3.4 whose source code was available. It is developed
by Mr Klivo Lendon (indriko at yahoo.com). Its last release
3.4 is available on net with source code but that is not
having these modules. It is a simple editor (that is what
abbreviation SimRedo in the Esperanto language) doing
several things in various encodings.

I added full Indic modules to that software, and did some
more small modules here and there.

We are planning for a Jan'05 release of this software. It
will remain Free, CopyLeft, Open Source Code. No
registration is required. It is not adware, not nagware, not
guiltware, not lock-ware, or whatever-ware.

System Requirements:
--------------------
It is Java based, that should make it platform independent
and it should work on *nix, Linux also.

I have developed Indic module purely on Win98SE, thus it
will work on this and all higher/ later O.S. of MS, namely,
NT, 2000, ME, XP, 2003, etc. On win98SE, I find that at some
places, like windows titles, the text is not coming in
non-english scripts. I am not aware about its compatibility
on win95.

It needs Java, which is not part of this package, but which
is freely downloadable from net. I have developed it using
j2sdk 1.4.1_01. You need not have entire sdk. Only runtime
is required. It uses Swing extensively, thus you can decide
which version/ release of Java runtime will be needed.

You need Unicode fonts which are not part of this package,
but several of which are freely downloadable from net. Most
of the XP based fonts have worked on my win98SE.

The last jar file (java executable) of the main program was
some 156 KB. There are some other dozens of small and big
files for keymaps, encoding, transliteration definitions,
samples, help etc.). Help files (html text) themselves are
quite big. There are some other add ons like spell checker
for esperanto, which you can download separately.

Indic Feaures of the software:
------------------------------
It has modules through which you can type in dozens of
international scripts. I have added support for Indic
scripts enabling you to type in

Devanagari (Hindi, Sanskrit, Marathi),
Bangla,
Gurmukhi (Punjabi),
Gujarati,
Oriya,
Tamil,
Telugu,
Kannada,
Malayalam, and,
Urdu.

These are phonetic keyboards.

For all above mentioned scripts, other than Urdu, the
keyboard almost remains same. That is, the same key give the
character in different scripts depending on what script you
have curretly selected. Thus, if you can type in one script,
just by changing the script, you can type in some other
script without knowing much of that script.

The keyboard can be displayed on screen, though, at present,
you can't click on a key to enter that character.

You can also create your own keyboards by very simple method.

Default interface language (in which menu, messages, queries
appear) is English, but you can have the interface in
French, Esperanto, or Hindi also. Hindi interface has been
developed by me. I seek interested and learned members to
develop interface in Urdu and other Indic languages.

You can change the text between

Character
Code in Decimal HTML fromat (e. g. Ӓ)
Code in HexaDecimal HTML code (e. g. ኯ)
Code in Unicode format (\u12af called backslash u).

You can transliterate between

Hindi and Urdu (both ways)

In between Devanagari (Hindi, Sanskrit, Marathi), Bangla,
Gurmukhi (Punjabi), Gujarati, Oriya, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada,
Malayalam. (all combinations.)

Urdu and ArabTeX (both ways)

Hindi and iTRANS (both ways)

As ArabTeX or iTRANS don't suffice to handle entire Unicode
character set for all these scripts, I have created another
coding system which has roman codes for all charaters for
all these scripts. I am calling it UniIndic (Unicode Indic
scripts). It will have transliterations between UniIndic and
all these scripts (all combinations.)

Whichever of the above modules works to my satisfaction by
the time I release it, those will be available since the
beginning, and others will be perfected and added in due course.

You can't transliterate directly between the scripts which
are mentioned above in different sets, but you can do it
through some common script which in both sets, from/to you
wish to convert. Like, you can't directly go from Hindi to
ArabTeX but can get it From Hindi to Urdu to ArabTeX.
Similarly you can't do Urdu to Tamil but can do Urdu to
Hindi to Tamil.

While transliterating, the basic popular letters of albhabet
of the TO scripts are used as a default, but I have created
an extended character set to enable representation of other
characters of the FROM language into TO language. You have
option to transliterate to this Extended character set also.

Thus, I have created additional definitions in Devanagari
using nuqta and other characters so that ain, five z, three
s, two t etc can be correctly achieved in Urdu. However if
you don't use these definitions, the basic hindi letter will
be transliterated to one letter of Urdu.

There is no lexicon (word list) or spell checker.

Hindi to urdu is coming quite correctly without needing any
change in hindi text, but, to convert Urdu to some sensible
Hindi, you need to adapt to some new things. Like you need
to mandatorily put zabar, zar, pesh, jazm (for halant) etc.
without which you are assured to get incorrect Hindi.

There are some new characters selected from Unicode Arabic
definitions which are mapped onto some hindi letters for one
to one mappings, but even if you don't use them, Urdu
letter will get mapped to nearest hindi character.

by using some characters like backslash "\" or angle
brackets "<>", you can avoid part of your text from getting
transliterated. It will help you if you intend to
tranlisterate html files, or are using multiple scripts in
the same file.
--------------

Hope this information helps you to conclude whether it will
work on your system, what other software/utilities you need
to make it work on your system and whether the content are
worth anything for you to feel like trying it.

Any query/ suggestion is welcome.

Please wait for the release information about this by coming
weekend.
