Recently I was watching a VCD of Bhai Behan (1959) and had the Hindi
Film Geet Kosh, Volume 3 (2nd edition) open at page 451 to find the
singer’s names for each song. As the movie credits unfolded, I was
surprised to find GS Kohli listed as the music director (a/c HFGK, it
is N Dutta) and Jan Nisar Akhtar listed as the lyricist (HFGK lists
Sahir Ludhianvi and Raja Mehndi Ali Khan as the lyricists). Two songs
were missing (par for Indian VCDs) but the remaining songs were all
there. Believing in the accuracy of the film credits, I wrote to
Hamraaz ji regarding this discrepancy. He insisted that the HFGK
information was correct and, in fact, had the song booklet of the
movie to prove his point. The mystery was finally resolved by Surjit
Singh. The manufacturers had spliced in the credits of Mr India, a
1961 movie with music by GS Kohli. (Hamraz ji had suspected as much.)
I went back and looked at the credits of Mr India and Bhai Behan (both
gifted by Surjit Singh) and, sure enough, after the “GP Sippy present
… Desy [sic] Irani and Baby Naaz in … Bhai Behan,” the font and font
size suddenly changes and the remaining credits are all from Mr India
(1961). Even the title music is of Mr India!

We all know that Indians are masters in adulteration of food and other
items, but this is rather unique in that they will go so low as to
adulterate the credits of a movie. Incidentally, Indus is the
manufacturer of the Bhai Behan VCD under discussion. Now, I vaguely
remember late Satish Kalra ji once mentioning another movie where the
credits had been similarly switched. So, you can’t even trust movie
credits any more.

Oh god. More fodder for the Jayaramans of the world to rant against
everyone but those who have 78RPM records in their library "in MINT
CONDITION" ...

Actually, records (mint condition or not) have wrong info on them too.
For examples, see HFGK, where we have statements like, although the
record says A but on listening to the record we hear the singer B (!
=A) :)

All this is irrelevant. What matters is the age of the person looking at the
record
and the MINT condition of the record.

Abhay

You are partially right.

What matters is the age of the person looking at the record, the MINT
condition of the record and
'LOOK-n-READ on both sides'.

I have another problem with film credits.

Shalini has uploaded video of "zamii.n bhii vohii hai" from Chandni
Chowk on youtube. The titles show names of Shailendra, Majrooh and
Raja Mehendi Ali Khan as lyricists. However, according to HFGK, the
film has two more lyricists; Saif uddin Saif for the song,
ironically, "zamii.n bhii vohii hai" (alongwith Majrooh) and Qamil
Rashid for the song "majboor kii muhabbat" . Were the names not
included because these two went to Pakistan?

Same thing about Malhar. Video of "garjat barasat bhiijata aaiilo"
shows names of Indeevar and Kaif Irfani as lyricists in titles, but
according to HFGK it has one more lyricist, Sham Lal. In fact Sham Lal
could be same as Indeevar because that was his real name.

If you watch closely there are mistakes in
assistant music directors in many movies .
Unfortunately most movie watchers do not bother
about the assistants .

For this kind of adulteration, (IMHO) person mastering the VCD had to go out
of
his way to do this kind of mixup.
