Query - Hai aapna dil

Hai aapna dil to awara from Solva Saal (1958) is picturized on Dev
Anand and Waheeda Rehman in a train compartmant. Does anyone know if
this was shot on location...i.e in a real moving train?

It may be a combination of both. According to me, the shooting is in a
real compartment of the local trains in Bombay of the 50s and part of
60s.The interiors are the giveaway. When the window and outside
scenery is in view, it was shot in a moving train. The rest of the
song may have been shot when the train was stationary.

The 'moving' effect is a result of 'back projection',
All the passengers do not have any 'moving' train
effect and I think it is very difficult to shoot in such
situation(moving train).

The use of back projection would be possible only in the studio.
As far as I can make out the shooting is in a real compartment of a
local train.
The absence of any moving train effect could be explained by the fact
the train is moving rather slowly.

I think it is a set, not a real moving train. Apart from what Irfan
has mentioned, I noticed that there are too many close-up shots, as if
they don't want us to see the edges. I think there is no shot from the
outside. Also, the characters do not show the movements typical of
people in a moving train, such as moving heads, shoulders etc.

Yes it is a set as there are many 'dolly shots' which are not
possible in a train compartment.

IMO, it is shot in real compartment. The interior details (the
ventilators, luggage racks, worn out rexine seat covers, etc.) could
not have possibly been exactly duplicated in a studio.

No body movements of the people inside means that the those shots were
taken when the train/compartment was stationary. Watch the station
lights through the door especially at the top end from 2.30 onwards
(the train is moving quite slowly, which would also explain the
absence of body movements). I remember those local trains were not
rickety.

Some months back, a local train was hired for a film starring Katrina
Kaif and was parked on the spare platform at Goregoan station. So
there you have it.

NB: At the end of the shooting on one of the days, Katrina had to be
in Downtown Bombay for a function and there was not enough time to
reach by road, so the Western Railway very kindly ran the train non-
stop with a single passenger (Katrina) to Churchgate station, where
she was picked up by the show organisers.
