RMICers,

As many are aware, this charmin Mand-based piece is one of the 10-12
in an LP of Ud. BGAK's Thumris released probably in the mid-late
1960s. Listening to it again the other day, it occurred to me that I
can't make heads or tails of the lyrics or language. Any help?

Not that I can make sense of the words myself, but from the sounds of
it, I think the language is Sindhi. Maybe one of our Sindhi knowing
friends (Hema?) can help.

The inlay card of the casette (Classic Gold) says it is Marwari.

Dear Sanjeev,

Mr. Rajeev Patke's informative site has the wordings as 'maran munthe
yun gal yun' and the raag as Sindhi Kafi (is the latter detail
correct?)

http://courses.nus.edu.sg/course/ellpatke/Miscellany/bade%20ghulam.htm

Also, I have never ever heard the Multani Kafi number that is listed
as the song on the flip side of the same disc: 'jindri looti te'. I'll
be grateful if someone can make this recording available.

The words 'gal' and 'jindri' are Punjabi words, are they not? I stand
to be corrected.

Regards.

Sindhi Kafi is the musical-linguistic form, is it not? I.e. a Kafi in
the Sindhi language as there are Kafi in Multani language (Saraiki?).

I think that's correct - there's no Raga Kafi within driving distance
in the composition. Thanks to all posters for help/clarification.

Interesting. So are we now this is Sindhi after all? Because after
reading Kiran's post in this thread, I second guessed myself and
contacted a Marwari-knowing friend who said, in effect, "लग तो
मारवाड़ी ही रहा है पर शब्द बहुत अस्पष्ट हैं, कुछ समझ में नहीं आ रहा.
(It does sound like Marwari, but the words are very unclear, I can't
understand anything.)"

BTW, is there such a thing as a "marwari kafi"? I thought kafis were
unique to the northwestern provinces (Sindh, Punjab, ...)?

Don't know about Marwari Kafi but there is something called Kutchi
Kafi. Is there a Punjabi Kafi?

Kutchi Kafi is called decaf in the West;
while Pakki Kafi (sung in areas that are
in Pakistan or contiguous to Pakistan)
is the regular brew....

Pt Omkarnath Thakur's 78 rpm release of Vande Maataram was labelled as
'Bangiya Kafi'.
