Dear Group Members:

I am wondering if there is anyone who has a recording of thumris by
Ustad Afzal Hussain Jaipurwale. I would be really interested in
getting a copy or having a lead on somewhere where such a recording is
commercially available.

Yours,
Sandip

Sandip - a commercial tape released about 12-13 years
ago (to my recollection) includes light classical performances
in the following ragas:

Pilu; Tilak Kamod; Pahadi; Khamaj; Gara; Jogiya; Bhairavi

Please email me and I'll make you a copy.

Could someone please let me know a bit more about the artiste? I picked up a
copy of this tape some time ago, and have been trying to get some info about
him without much success.

Abhik

Abhik:

Afzal Hussain Jaipuri from what I know was a very respected thumri and
ghazal singer of Jaipur whose family were Hindus known for their
devotion to the goddess Saraswati before they converted at some point
to Islam. Afzal Hussain Jaipuri's family were singers at the royal
court in Jaipur and Afzal Hussain himself had won the deep respect of
Ustad Barkat Ali Khansaheb.

Afzal Hussain Jaipuri's children are the popular ghazal singers ustad
Ahmed and Ustad Mohammed Hussain who are making a name for themselves
singing bhajans as well. Whether these two deserve the "Ustad" title
is debatable. They have such a rich musical heritage and a strong
knowledge of classical music which they have squandered with some very
uneven singing over the years. The Hussain brothers' last few
recordings have been utterly dreadful making me wonder how they won
the Sangit Natak Akademi this year (or was it last year ?).

I am curious to hear how their father sings. Maybe you can give me an
idea.

Hope this helps a bit...

Sandip.
