Yo, I know I aint supposed to be in here no more or whatever, but push
the bullshit aside for a sec. I had to speak on this. Its sad that he
died, not 'cause he was a dope ass MC, but because he was young, and he
was slain maybe before his time. God Bless his seeds. But this makes me
think about a few things. First of all, I know its not rap related, it
probably has somethin' to do with jealousy, which is somethin' that us
minorities kill and are killed over constantly, and we just can't seem
to shed that shit. Not even minorities, just poor people in general. I
dont mean to preach, but why is it that niggas hate to see anyone have
anything better than us? All I hear from cats is "Yo, Im'a stick that
cat, 'cause he think he fly", or "Yo, I gotta have that chain he got,
Im'a get him for that". I dont mean to stray away from the main topic.
Only in rap music is someone murdered every year. I would say the
Hip-Hop culture, but I know theres alot of suburban kids in the culture
these days, and theres nothin' wrong with that at all, but they dont
face the problems that the ghetto community faces, so like I said, its
poor people that really need to make some changes. The sad thing is, if
Big-L wasn't a rapper then niggas wouldn't even care that he got merked.
Theres hundreds of kids everyday that get slain just like that in
ghettos across the country, most of the time over stupid shit, "He
fucked my girl", "He got me in a one on one", "He think he hard", "He
came in MY hood", "He got somethin' goin' for himself, and I dont, so I
gotta kill him". Thats just a few reasons why niggas (ghetto cats) kill
each other. Its sad that niggas gotta get killed before you really
realize that things are real fucked up, and whats even sadder than that
is niggas STILL dont learn. And its a cycle that will never end, because
people raise their seeds to be the same way, so every generation is
gonna get worse, and worse. The other day I heard this lady tell her
daughter, who was no older than 5, that she was gonna go get the cop and
tell the cop to shoot her if she didnt be quiet. Now you might laugh or
whatever, but think about it, you would NEVER hear a suburban mother say
that to her child. I know SOME of you suburban peeps think that its cool
to live in the city, and some of you wish you were from the hood or
whatever. But ya'll just need to be thankful that you were lucky enough
to be raised in a non-violent area, because whats goin' on in the city
is a serious situation that can never be turned around, for the simple
fact that niggas are hard-headed. Yo, I just had to get this shit off my
chest. R.I.P. Big-L and everyone that got murdered on the street. Peace
to all.

Ah...the return of the Golden Child. No one said you had to go, glad
to see you come back on an excellent post.

Hip Hop does not create violence. Violence was around before Hip Hop.
It was out of the want for something better than gangs and living an
impoverished life that it was born. Inner city youth trying to do
something better with their time.

Over the years, Hip Hop has moved to every part of the world (just
about). But the violence seems to stay in the confines of Americas
Urban areas. What does that tell you? Theres nothing wrong with Hip
Hop, theres something wrong with society, the way we are tought to
live & how to look at things.

Now thats some messed up ish. But word on that too. There isn't any
way to control the way people raise their seeds, but we can help out
in our communities. Kids are amazing people. They have incredible
potential, all they need is for someone to believe in that potential.
I've mentioned that I used to volunteer with Inner City Youth. A lot
of those kids just needed some encouragement, someone to believe in
them. Now I know we can't save them all, but you can't even save 1 if
you don't try.

RIP to Big-L. May you rest in peace my brother.

On the real, Goldenchild, you've just expressed what I've been thinking
on for the past year. I hear more and more cats talk on how so and so
got busted for something stupid and this is just in passing. I don't
even know these people and it's like dag man, you realize what's going
on? I mean, i must admit, where I live, it's alot better than it used to
be. And I know there are areas in Philly which are definitely on the
come up. But there's still places folks won't or don't want to go to at
night. There's areas "which people fear to walk in." Cats is gettin'
busted over stupid stuff. Like I said, thangs are still ill.

So true. If you can help the children we will definetly have a better
future. I volunteer with kids often through the schools and through boy
scouts. You would not beleive how rewarding it is personally and how much
of a difference you can make in a childs life. It doesn't take much time,
try it out. Kids are amazing people.

every year? nah...not every year...hip-hop has been around 20-25 years.

and hella people die of drug overdoses in rock-n-roll...our fatalities are low
compared to rock's lists of deaths from various causes (cobain, that drummer
from smashing pumpkins, the lead singer of blind melon, hendrix, lennon
[murdered], jim morrison, and on and on).

Thats why I said Murders my man.
Plus, what I meant was....in the nineties there has been some kind of
tragedy in Hip-Hop, from Cool C and Steady B gettin' the death penalty
in the early nineties, to Big-L gettin' murdered in '99. And its getting
worse, not better. Let me ask you somethin' else, when you read someones
post, are you reading it to say what you feel about it, or just to pick
it apart and feel intelligent? Just wondering. Peace.

Not to be picky Spirit, but it was the keyboardist from Smashing Pumpkins
that died. The drummer was with him the night of his death. The drummer
was fine but was eventually kicked out of the group for his drug use.

Anyways, I think you could make the case that rap has a higher-per-capita
ratio of performers:deaths. I mean, of course more "rock'n'rollers" have
died, but that's because 1) more people perform rock'n'roll in general (at
least until very recently) and 2) mainstream rock'n'roll as we know it has
been around twice as long as hip-hop has (since the early 50's).

I think that definitely more rappers die violent deaths. I mean, the only
prominent rock'n'rollers that have died violent deaths are Lennon and
Cobain (but even that was self-inflicted). Most of the them are drug
overdoses. With hip-hop we have performers dying mostly as a result of
violent crime: Biggie, 2Pac, Big L, Scott LaRock, etc.

I'm not saying rock'n'roll is better than hip-hop in any way. Hip-hop
once again just reflects society, even in the way that its young, black
stars die.
