Hip Hop in the nine seven is kinda like the WWF....it's great
entertainment but that shit ain't real. Here's a list of what "we"
dissed then but accept now.

Tracks stolen from late 70s R&B funk/pop songs....

Then - You Can't Touch This - MC Hammer
Now - Can't Nobody Hold Me Back - Puff Daddy, Firm Biz- The Firm, Hey
AZ - AZ

Dancers who try to rap....

Then - MC Hammer, Kid N Play
Now - Puff Daddy, Praz (and he's not a good dancer)

Tailor made outfits with baggy pants and designer glasses.....

Then - MC Hammer
Now - Puff Daddy, Nas

Artists who claim to be "entertainers" and not rappers....

Then - MC Hammer
Now - Puff Daddy

Is it just me or is there a trend here? Rap is outta control. These
bastards are going multi-platinum just like Hammer before them.
Remember, you laugh at the name of MC Hammer now, but he was the most
popular rapper at one time. I just hope there isn't a Puff Daddy
cartoon.

The whole basis of hip-hop is to entertain. We listent to it because we enjoy
listening to music. Every artist contributes a little something that he or
she thinks people will like to listen. Whether it's hardcore or like Puff
said, I make music that makes you wana dance. And he does. And brother is
mad rich doing it. Why should we playa hate because he's taking the culture
to another level. Our music went from rap to hip-hop. It was already taken
to another level. If we can accept listening to music that glorifies gangstas
and talk about selling drugs, why can't we accept Puff Daddy making hip-hop
more mainstream.

Really?? So our culture is only there to entertain folks. We can't
educate unless we entertain. So this hip-hop way of life that we live
(or claim we do) is based on the fact that others are entertained by
it??

Every artist contributes a little something that he or
she thinks people will like to listen. Whether it's hardcore or like Puff
said, I make music that makes you wana dance. And he does. And brother is
mad rich doing it.

Who cares if he's mad rich doing it?? Good for him, but I am not going
to jock him just cause he made all this money. I'm pretty sure he
doesn't give a shit about the growth of this hip-hop thing. He said it
himself: it's all about the benjamins. If you believe that, then why
give a shit about hip-hop?? Just pimp it until you make your cash right??

Why should we playa hate because he's taking the culture
to another level.

This one gave me a good laugh.

Our music went from rap to hip-hop. It was already taken
to another level. If we can accept listening to music that glorifies gangstas
and talk about selling drugs, why can't we accept Puff Daddy making hip-hop
more mainstream.

Rap is still rap. It is an aspect of the hip-hop culture. I can't accept
glorification of gangsters or selling drugs (of course it depends on if
it is in fact glorification, or one's creative expression of their
situation surrounding their lifestyle, adding something new to this
played out theme. I don't think I can accept hip-hop becoming more
mainstream. It wasn't made to be mainstream, and if it does make it to
the mainstream, so much would be lost that I don't think it would be
hip-hop anymore.

Hip-hop is not just about entertaining, it's an outlet that stands for
the black community and there troubles. It was the one area that was
ours...ours to show our skills, creativity, and the ability to demonstrate
awareness of decaying neighborhoods and our people. It's an outlet that
reaches our young people the most, and the true talented lyricists like
Krs-One and Wu-Tang to name a few of the very few have used it for just
that purpose. They hip-hop unlike the many who are doing rap.
People such as puff daddy, mase, jay-z, foxy brown with the recycled
lyrics and beats my friend, are doing rap. Instead of trying to awaken the
mentally dead young brothers and sisters, they help to perpetuate the
stereo types laid down by the institution. Yes it's fine to make money,
after all we are sucked into this capitalist sytem, but don't do it by
exploiting your people and their situations. take note of the lyrics
forthcoming. compare them to any by any of the said artists and you will
clearly see who aims to teach as well as entertain...

this is hip-hop, this is what should be tought to our young people, not
how to pimp women and remain in the system. self preservation and pride is
what will ultimately make the difference, not how much money you have
make. all of us must remember no matter how much wealth and status you
attain, you're still black and you will always have hurdles to cross. they
should direct their energy on opposing the negative force instead of
enahncing it...light up a big brown garcia y vega and absorb the science.
