"Bitch" by Meredith Brooks spends a second week at number one,
having deposed "I'll Be Missing You" by Puff Daddy and Faith Evans
(featuring 112) last week. With the phenomenal global success of Alanis
Morissette's third album (she had two previous ones released only in her
native Canada), record labels are frantically searching for "the next
Alanis" to tap into the extremely lucrative demographic that wants angry
female rock and has embraced Morissette and, to a lesser extent, No
Doubt, with hopes of profiting the way Maverick Records, Morissette's
label, has. Brooks appears to be the first to achieve some kind of global
success, with "Bitch" making the top ten in the United States, United
Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand; however, it remains to be seen if
she can even approach the sales of Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill."
Take, for example, the performances of the two albums in the United
States, the music market I have the most familiarity with and the most
information about. At this time, "Jagged Little Pill" has been certified
15 times-platinum, which commemorates sales of 15 million copies of that
album in the United States! Obviously, this has been over a long period
of time, more than two years. Brooks' album, "Blurring the Edges" has,
after fourteen weeks, climbed only as high as 22 and been certified gold
for sales of 500,000 copies. Excellent for a new artist, especially based
on only one single, but certainly not another Morissette. One has to
consider, though, what Morissette's album sales would have been had her
first three radio singles ("You Oughta Know", "Hand In My Pocket", and
"All I Really Want") been commercially available in a form other than the
entire album or import copies of cd singles from Europe. Would earlier
single releases have eaten into the overall sales of her album? One has
to wonder if that is happening to Brooks since "Bitch" has also been
certified gold for sales of the single. Would 500,000 more copies of
"Blurring the Edges" have been sold if "Bitch" had not been a commercial
single in the United States? One can only wait to see how her next single
does before passing judgment.
Ten singles bullet this week, including the new Hanson single,
"Where's the Love," which debuts at number 26. It is receiving votes from
France, the U.S., the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Venezuela, and New
Zealand. To my knowledge, it is only available as a single in Australia,
where it debuts at number two this week. "MMMBop" falls from two to four
on that chart, giving Hanson two singles in the top five at once in
Australia. They became the first act to debut at number one in Australia
with their debut single, and almost managed to pull it off with their
first two singles. However, "I'll Be Missing You," the single that
knocked "MMMBop" off the top in the United Kingdom, United States,
Australia" and on our chart, stopped "Where's the Love" from achieving
that record.
Bulleting from 100 to 69 this week is "How Do I Live" by LeAnn
Rimes, THE country music sensation of the moment. Two facts are
interesting about this single. First, it is the highest charting country
single ever on our chart, not hard considering it is only the second one
to make the top 100 ("It's Your Love" by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill was
the first, peaking at 89 last month). Secondly, notice Tip 35 this week
on the Runners-Up chart, "How do I Live" by Trisha Yearwood. Yearwood is
also an American country singer, and this is the same song as Rimes'.
Yearwood's version is from the soundtrack for the movie "Con Air." Rimes
originally recorded it for the film, but had her version rejected by the
soundtrack producers in favor of Yearwood. Rimes' American label, Curb,
decided to release it as a commercial single anyhow, just one week before
Yearwood's. Each has found its own musical niche. The version by Rimes
has gotten as high as six on the American pop charts while Yearwood only
climbed as high as 23. On the American country chart, however, Yearwood's
version is triumphant, moving up to number six while the version by Rimes
peaked at 43. As "Con Air" is released around the world, it will be
interesting to see which version ends up being a bigger hit
internationally. Yearwood's debuts at twenty in Australia this week while
Rimes' is in the top ten in Canada.

The new voting forms are ready! We now have brand new WWW forms for you to
use when you want to make a vote for the charts. This is what the new forms
can do:
- When you type a small part of a title, a Search button can look for titles
that match the characters you typed. So you don't have to remember the
exact title, and there is no need to find it in a long list. The form can do
the searching for you.
- You can type the titles yourself, and give or select extra information
for them, like names of publishers or categories (for some of the charts).
- You can still select multiple titles from a long list, as you were used to
do with our old forms.
- And best of all, you can use each of these three methods in any order, and
repeatedly, until you've configured your best set of votes. You only need to
click on Submit when you're ready.
- The forms will remember your previous votes. When you return to the forms
a week later, your votes will still be there.
- There are several more options available: You can reset any votes you sent
earlier, and you can vote anonymously if you like.
- And of course, the forms are now looking much better than before.
Several more features will be built in later, but we think the new forms are
so good already, you can just as well start using them now. These are the
addresses of the forms:
http://www.worldcharts.com/gvote-central.html PC Games
http://www.worldcharts.com/vvote-central.html Video Games
http://www.worldcharts.com/mvote-central.html Movies
http://www.worldcharts.com/svote-central.html Singles
http://www.worldcharts.com/avote-central.html Albums
And here's the last thing: You can support titles through your own webpages.
Find out what the ID numbers of your favourite titles are and make a link
like this:
http://www.worldcharts.com/gvote-central?add=[1234] to vote for one title and

When people click on this link, your favourite titles will already be on their
