but I've only heard 3-4 songs(Down 4 My Niggas, Shorty Wanna Be A Thug
and a couple others I can't remember). The ball and mjg was only
slowed down a little and chopped.
So is this the first "official" swishahouse release??

No, they have a few others. In a sense, their mix tapes are "official
releases" in the sense that they are available above the counter
(though I'm sure they aren't licensed or anything).
In this case, i believe they took a pre-existing Suave House release
(correct me if I'm wrong), licensed it out from Suave for a percentage
of sales or even a flat rate.

SwishaHouse is licensed etc through SouthWest Wholesale.
All the product they sell is official except maybe a few of the out the
trunk freestyles, but selling out the trunk is technically offical too if
you filed all your paperwork. The biggest issue to them is protecting
there product from bootleggers. Major commercial releases aren't really
hurt by bootleggers unless the album leaks and is wack, but small indie
labels can be hurt significantly, which is why they shout out places to
get 'official' copies of their product.
I think the major difference is that indie camps like SwishaHouse and the
SUC have legions of footsoldiers that make up their street promo teams.
I've been in a number of record stores all over the state of Texas and
they have people who hand deliver units for sale.
It's not just a passion, they make it a business too.
Micheal '5000' Watts isn't just some hip-hopper, he's a very well
established Houston radio personality on 97.9 The Boxx, probably one of
the biggest stations that plays hip-hop in the country. He has lots of
contacts, he's been on the radio for at least 10 years.
Part of the success of screw is the fact that Houston is a very large city
and local indie artists can sell 20,000 units locally if they have a club
hit.
Independently they make $5 a unit, that's a lot of cash from limited sales.
That's why I say hip-hop is regional, more so than most folks believe, to
the point where the actual 'elements' themselves come into question.

ship for not getting paid which forced them to switch labels. Rap-A-Lot

have westcoast and DefJam connections, so commerically they are a viable
entity.

chopped version. Some albums like the Botany Boys ship with regular and
screwed versions. I think yall don't comprehend how popular screw music
is down here.
You'll hear screw bumping in more peoples cars than regular radio.

Pick Up that 'Screw Heads' compilation, it's got a few good artists on there.

probably available nationally.
If you can find it, get The WreckShop Family 'Ack'n A Azz' lp.

Most definitely.
I think the major difference nowadays is that screw is in a post DJ Screw era.
DJ Screw's mixes where different in that his tapes were popular becuz he
screwed artists that weren't really popular but were good like the Botany
Boys. It made you want to listen to his mixes becuz you didn't know what
to expect but you know it would be good. It kind of makes you non-biased
in your listening tastes, which is a bad habit of lots of backpackers,
which made the tapes universal. Screw also produced lots of orginal beats
with his freestyle tapes, moreso than SwishaHouse.
But there are lots of dj's making Screw in Houston.
Beltway 8 Records, DJ Bone, Freestyle Kingz, Sh!t Factory and the list goes on.
It kinda really just depends on what side of Town you live on.
Here in Austin, erebody's either a backpacker, a boheme, or trying to be
like Houston so they clone anything H-Town does. But that's a whole notha
story.

You're missing what I'm saying.
They are not licensing all the songs on the mix tapes (CD's)
yes, labels are giving them the wink-wink treatment, and possibly
they're giving oral and/or written permission for song usage (maybe
the local labels?)
so technically, although their sales are legit, they are arguably
BOOTLEGGERS, because there is NO WAY that they're licensing all that
shit. If it was specific to a couple of labels maybe, but it's not,
it's across the boards, especially the "Fuck Action" series, you know
they ain't clearing all those songs with all those majors...
that doesn't mean labels won't turn a blind eye to it, but if he was
selling 50k+ consistently on the mixtapes, best believe labels would
be steppin' to him.
oh yeah, I don't "know" any of this, but it stands to reason
on the flip side, in some cases I wouldn't be surprised if he's being
paid to put groups on tapes, it's great promotion for emerging
artists, or any artists for that matter.
So that's why i contend that they are releasing shit on two levels.
When Watts puts out Swishahouse artists LP's, they don't even have
samples usually, cuase they're keeping the shit on the up-and-up in
case it really blows (I think). The exception to this would be the
Slim Thug album, but hey, I don't think it's a coincidence that you
can't find that widely like you can the Archie Lee or something else.
It's treated like one of their mixtapes, becasue frankly that's what
it is. And there's no way they licensed all those instrumentals on it
either, it doesn't move enough units (imo)

reporting income (I think), I'm talking about (lack of) licensing of
at least SOME (probably most) of the material on the mix tapes (CD's).

yeah, I do like the way Watts and them take elements from current hits
and splice them up a bit. It's derivitave, but that's what mix tapes
do...
