Damn man, I'm glad I didn't buy the 16gb earlier. My old school
ipod's in the shop getting fixed and hopefully they just replace that
jawn and I can get credit for this one. Or maybe wait until they got
a 64 gb one out.

i think it'll be a few months before we start seeing 64 GB flash mp3
players. within the next year or so probably, give or take a couple
months, but definitely not in the next few weeks/couple months, if i had
to guess.

So what's the difference between Flash drives and the traditional hard
drives that are in the 160gb iPod's? Is it that flash drives access
files faster? I heard something about no moving parts in a flash
drive, what's the significance of that?

However do I get by with my 500 MB?

yeah, exactly, traditional hard drives use a magnetic read head to read
sectors off of a spinning platter. flash drives are entirely solid
state (can't remember how they work exactly), like the cards you use in
a digital camera (which are also flash memory).

they have (i think) faster read times than traditional hard drives, but
slower write times (which is fine since you read way more than you write
on an mp3 player). also, since they have no moving parts, they consume
way less battery power, and are typically less prone to failure.

and in the last 3 years or so, flash memory has gotten way cheaper and
way higher capacity.

Well, you're obviously failing miserably... ;)
