it doesn't even come close to the 18th letter. i want to listen to a
new rakim album as much as the next man but this one is neither here
nor there. he used to have much better beats + i don't even want to
talk about the singers.
seriously, i don't believe the hype. he's turned from a leader to a

Okay, they went a bit overboard with that singer (who seems to be the
same on every other track). But to compare it to the 18th Letter? That
was pretty hit or miss in my book.

Yeah, I prefer follow the leader or let the rhythm hit em too, but this
is him, now. And it's pretty decent. Nothing to be ashamed of.

So... I take it this is Ra's attempt at a contemporary album. A
failure IMO. The beats are just bland compositions that may
sound contemporary but lack any character. No rapper will
ever truly shine on beats that don't aim to rise up to his level.
Most of the time, if I didn't know any better, I would say that's
not the God. What happened to the grit and bass in his voice?
The singers (and hook samples) are a distraction, often
downright annoying.

back in the day and now he's finally fallen from this high pedestal
you've put him on. Or am I wrong? (It was like that with P.E. for me.)
I just take it as an album like any other and I'm not disappointed,
partially, I guess, cos I toned down my expectations like 10 years ago.

Eh, not disappointed. I wouldn't listen to this LP no matter whose
name was on it. There were at least 5 LPs put out this year that were
better, and that's saying something for 2009. Blaq Poet, Puba's, Marco
Polo & Torae, Raekwon -- even Kurious' CD was better than this shit and
it had a number of let down tracks. If you want to use the
disappointed argument Kurious got it, but still -- that's an "okay"
record; Rakim's is just shit. Even Capone and Noriega had a couple
Primo tracks to prevent you from smashing the CD and cutting your
wrists with the shrapnel.

rakim on 18th letter sounded different from his earlier records as
well. this only annoyed me when i saw him "perform" with two different
voices, realizing that he probably was too lazy to remember the
lyrics. but he still sounded good on that record. pete rock, clark
kent + premo did a good job as well.

Pretty much. I have a feeling the Dre-camp wanted to turn him into a
complete, marketable package ala Snoop, Eminem, and others. Some sort
of tangible gimmick to hang off of. Rakim probably didn't like that
idea, or had something else in mind. Somewhere along all of that he
got infected with their popish beats and didn't shake it off for this
album. Problem being, Dre's people sort of know how to make pop-hop
work without alienating everyone.
The result of this whole experience is an LP where he had creative
control, and attempted to duplicate what he'd learned at Aftermath with
his own special ingredients. Unfortunately the resulting entree is
vomit-inducing, like pancakes with mayonnaise on top: an average dish
you'd usually enjoy, but is now completely fucked and no amount of
syrup can really fix it. Throw that shit in the trash and start over:
you wasted Bisquick, mayonnaise, and your time -- don't do it again.
Fuck it, I'm going to IHOP.
Hey -- how about a remix? That's not even possible because the
concepts, lyrics, and hooks all suck.

somehow rakim without eric b suck, while rakim with eric b is
amazing. 18th letter had like 2 songs, seriously, whats with people
jocking it? I mean its better than the master by almost the same
degree as its worth than DSTT, but just like being a lot smarter than

"Blaqprint" wasn't horrible but middle of the road at best. My fear is that
Blaq Poet would even be considered as one of the best albums of the year. If
so, I will finally succumb to the notion that hip hop is dead...
