Sorry to hear that...my mom got diagnosed last week.
She had breast cancer in '74....had it taken off...but now,
it's reappeared in the same area on her sternum. the Dr's
say this is pretty rare. she's gonna start chemo next week.
I was in tears yesterday after I got of the phone with her
yesterday...she'll beat it again, though.
Bet.

I'm pretty sure the development of gene therapy will for tumors will end
up requiring tailoring individual genotype-specific therapies for each
patient. Not a cheap process.

This will end up being quite lucrative for Oncologists and Cancer
Institutes.

You can't get rid of us that easily.......

Common virus kills cancer, study finds

Jun 21, 4:21 PM (ET)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A common virus that is harmless to people can
destroy cancerous cells in the body and might be developed into a new
cancer therapy, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.

The virus, called adeno-associated virus type 2, or AAV-2, infects an
estimated 80 percent of the population.

"Our results suggest that adeno-associated virus type 2, which infects the
majority of the population but has no known ill effects, kills multiple
types of cancer cells yet has no effect on healthy cells," said Craig
Meyers, a professor of microbiology and immunology at the Penn State
College of Medicine in Pennsylvania.

"We believe that AAV-2 recognizes that the cancer cells are abnormal and
destroys them. This suggests that AAV-2 has great potential to be
developed as an anti-cancer agent," Meyers said in a statement.

He said at a meeting of the American Society for Virology that studies
have shown women infected with AAV-2 who are also infected with a
cancer-causing wart virus called HPV develop cervical cancer less
frequently than uninfected women do.

AAV-2 is a small virus that cannot replicate itself without the help of
another virus. But with the help of a second virus it kills cells.

For their study, Meyers and colleagues first infected a batch of human
cells with HPV, some strains of which cause cervical cancer.

They then infected these cells and normal cells with AAV-2.

After six days, all the HPV-infected cells died.

The same thing happened with cervical, breast, prostate and squamous cell
tumor cells.

All are cancers of the epithelial cells, which include skin cells and
other cells that line the insides and outsides of organs.

"One of the most compelling findings is that AAV-2 appears to have no
pathologic effects on healthy cells," Meyers said.

"So many cancer therapies are as poisonous to healthy cells as they are to
cancer cells. A therapy that is able to distinguish between healthy and
cancer cells could be less difficult to endure for those with cancer."

AAV-2 is being studied intensively as a gene therapy vector -- a virus
modified to carry disease-correcting genes into the body. Gene therapy
researchers favor it because it does not seem to cause disease or immune
system reaction on its own.

I always read Dave's posts ... and in so doing I have never, ever seen him
respond to a personal tragedy with humor--black or otherwise. And I say
that as someone who has occasionally been the object of his wondrous and
wicked sense of humor.

I like to laugh, and I like to see others laugh. And as a result, in
attempting to be humorous I have occasionally misjudged and crossed the line
into either tastelessness, or being a smart ass. So I can understand that
transgression ... and have offered an apology upon occasion. To attempt to
defend tastelessness simply confirms that it was, in reality, maliciousness.

Ah well. This has gotten too much air time. Someone is gonna step up and

I just found out ~20 minutes ago that my father may have prostate
cancer. Given that he just turned 78 last week, it's not too
surprising. He's off to the urologiost in two weeks for some poking and
probing that'll have him in a foul mood for a few days.

Thankfully, prostate cancer in older men is pretty slow growing and
there are usually a number of treatment options available. It's the
price most men pay for living through their late 70s...

Chin up sweets... Folks who live that long are pretty stubborn and
don't usually give in without a hell of a fight. I'm sure your mom will
be fine -- just print out a bunch of your posts for her to read during
the treatments. They'll take her mind off it. Bet.

I never claimed that my post wasn't malicious. It was

There's a couple of other conditions generate the same symptoms, and the

Dave,

Best wishes to your mom! My mother survived it back in '85, and it was
a scary time indeed. Hang in there!

Passed by this thread initially, so I missed this little gem from RMGD's
biggest retahd.

Dude, you are truly an asshole. Moms with cancer are real life, not
newsgroup flame fodder. Learn the difference between real life and faux
life on Usenet.

I think your problem may be that you have no real life; this is it for you.

Being the tremendous asshole that you are, I certainly understand why that's
the case.

My mom has had cancer several times and beat it every time.

Moms who beat it once are guaranteed to beat it again.

Hang in there man, and try to keep your sense of humor. Hundreds of
RMGD'ers count on it reading it every day!

Blow me. I don't know Dave Kelly and I sure as hell don't
know Dave Kelly's mommy. I couldn't give a shit care less
about some random Usenet puke who apropos of absolutely
nothing decides to trash me and my wife in a public forum.
I feel no obligation, social or otherwise, to treat Usenet
punks any better than they treat me, so to make a long story
short, fuck him, fuck his mommy and fuck you. And that *is*
real life on Usenet.

The kids in third grade were *far* more creative in making
disparaging variations on my surname (think flatulence ;-).
But I've come to realize you're easily amused and that I've
probably condemned myself to engaging in a battle of wits
with an unarmed man.

Yo, that's some funny shit. Whoopee.

For someone who doesn't care, you sure get upset easily over harmless faux
life Usenet flames. Your skin is tissue paper thin, you are fragile, weak.
Your real life anguish is very apparent; I can picture you red faced,
hunched over your computer, blustering and blubbering, sweat beads flying,
as you angrily pound away on your keyboard, wishing you didn't have to
pretend you have a wife.

You have alienated everyone on RMGD with your childish tantrum over a
harmless faux life Usenet flame; a tantrum which included hurling real life
insults intended to cause harm. Not that it did; Kelly is clearly more of a
man than you and is much better able to deal with insults than a fragile,
weak, and thoroughly annoying unmarried nimrod like you.

I don't know why anyone would want to alienate everyone and intentionally
become an outcast; certainly you have been here long enough to watch the
wagons circle whenever any regular is in need or is being attacked in an out
of bounds, over the top real life manner, so you had to know this group
response was inevitable. Yet you crossed the inhumane line and continue to
refuse to acknowledge it anyway. Hmmmm.

The behavior you exhibit is usually indicitive of unresolved real life
problems, most probably loneliness and the lack of a fulfilling sexual
relationship. Armchair analysis of the sort I'm doing in this reply *is*
Usenet real life too, so you will just have to live with it.

I wish you luck in your efforts to seek help. Maybe a real life friend
could be of assistance, if any exist. I sure don't see any online friends
rushing to your defense. This is your *new* Usenet real life and you will
have to live with that too.

Until then, I bid you adieu.

Kelly, on the other hand, is always daily reading material and always good
for at least a few out loud belly laughs every day. I will continue to
read and enjoy his posts as long as he's here.

I have a copy of a recent sermon from the Chuich, and it says here that
it is inhumane to ask any woman to live without a testicle or two.

Oh, that's rich. *I* have thin skin ? In case you hadn't
noticed all the whining and wailing is coming from elsewhere.

I knew Sweetbac was a jerk, but I had no idea how truly
stupid the guy is. If I had known his driveway didn't go
all the way to the street I might have cut him a little more
slack. I mean the guy sends me email that could be read as
vaguely threatening and then he posts my emailed response to
Usenet without my permission. How stupid is *that* ? That's
Usenet 101 fer christ's sake. If I had wanted to be a prick
about it I'd have complained to Pacbell but instead I composed
a response at least as "funny" as anything the fat fool has
ever flung my way.

If it weren't for the rampant hypocrisy all the indignation
would be quite funny. You guys never cease to amuse.

No dipshit, that's what *YOU* posted yesterday. That

so stupid I expected that even you would know better.

We're a pretty wide-ranging, tolerant lot around here, you know...despite it

Bullshit. He was a mean-spirited jackass and there was
absolutely no justification for his foul-mouthed spew

I was a mean-spirited jackass, in this case, so to my mind
