Nuthin to do with Mac or Wiindoze, just play em in a different
multiplatform media player such as VLC. You and Larry BOTH gotta get out
more.

I believe VLC media player will play them, it's a free download if you
don't have it. Don't have any to play with, but VLC might convert them
to FLAC also.

They are video files. You can get a decoder for Windows Media Player or
you can use Quicktime.

If you want to send them to me, I can probably convert to a Windows
friendly format, but it better not be any of that cheap Chinese porn.

Actually VLC has been up there among the predominant multi platform
open-source media players for the past several years. It often plays audio
and video files where others won't, and is robust, reliable and continually
updated by crowdsourcing developers. OTOH Winamp is a one-trick pony best
left to the ashes of the early naughties (the past decade, the early
2000s).

Yea, it's certainly not a common format. Use the free XLD that can
convert just about any audio format to just about any other audio
format.

I know there's a Mac program that converts .flac into .m4a (Apple
lossless), so there must be something in the PC world that does the
opposite.

THANK you <stares at Bangladesh Billy>
I will google this XDL when I get home from work.
Since we jawin' and all....are these Mpeg 4 things just
the Mac version of Flac?....lossless?
As for the VLD player...I dont like it...clunky....where's
the hip little equalizer?...I load up winamp like a jukebox
and let 'er rip....now I gotta change players to listen to
these tunes?.....fuck that.
Dig....this VLD player is typical of Mac...take simple things
and complicate it...if they dont continue to to change shit
all the time, the lemmings lined up outside they stores arent
interested...

VLC isn't a Mac-only application; it's multiplatform, meaning there's a
version for you Windoze troglodytes. By contrast, XLD is Mac-only (I
think...unless it's also a Windoze codec). Mpeg-4 is simply a file standard
that works on most operating systems.

You're in SF: get a computer geek to help you...they're probably so
numerous you only need turn around at the Toronado to find one..just assure
him you're not trying to sex him up and for the cost of a beer or two
you'll be set with good advice (not that it'd be any better than that
you've already received here). You could also ping others here for Windoze
advice, no sexy strings attached.

Here's yet another good explanation of what mpeg4 is:

http://www.winxdvd.com/resource/mpeg-4.htm

MPEG-4 is one of the latest (audio and video) compression method
standardized by MPEG group, designed especially for low-bandwidth (less
than 1.5MBit/sec bitrate) video/audio encoding purposes. Probably the
best-known MPEG-4 video encoders are called DivX and XviD, which both are
nowadays fully standard-compliant MPEG-4 encoders.

It should be noted that unlike MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, the MPEG-4's
predecessors, MPEG-4 itself isn't just one unified encoding mechanism, but
rather a group name for several flavors of video and audio encoding methods
that share certain same characteristics. These "flavors" are often referred
either as "profiles" or "layers" in MPEG-4 compression scheme and each new
profile should be backwards compliant to the older, "lower" versions of
MPEG-4 in terms of playback capability. MPEG-4 group has standardized
several new layers - most important ones are h263+(which is used widely in
mobile phones, named as 3GP) and h.264 (often also called as AVC).

MPEG-4 Overview
MPEG-4 enables different software and hardware developers to create
multimedia objects possessing better abilities of adaptability and
flexibility to improve the quality of such services and technologies as
digital television, animation graphics, the World Wide Web and their
extensions.

The MPEG-4 format provides end users with a wide range of interaction with
various animated objects.

Standardized Digital Rights Management signaling, otherwise known in the
MPEG community as Intellectual Property Management and Protection (IPMP).

The MPEG-4 format can perform various functions, among which might be the
following: Multiplexes and synchronizes data, associated with media
objects, in such a way that they can be efficiently transported further via
network channels.
