Here's a site that tracks current polling:

http://www.electoral-vote.com/

It has Kerry leading in electoral votes, 285 to 249.

Yet a huge chunk of thes are weak or barely for either candidate.

Ohio, PA & FL are all currently barely Kerry.

NM, WI & MI show as barely Bush.

I'm a little far away for the wine and dinner (plus I don't have any
desire to seduce you) but I'll be happy to discuss your little state.

I hear that Woonsocket is the locus of this entire election, and how
Woonsocket goes, so goes the nation.

Or was that Pawtucket?

RI, where you have to pay to use the beach. Wacky place.

Hey, we can share the wine without necessarily sharing the women, Toad.

RI is a funny place...tiny (you can drive across it the long way in less than
45 minutes) but it has many different ethnic communities. In the case of
Woonsocket, it's the French Canadien haven, which leads to people talking like
this:

"Welcome to Woonsocket, drive slow your car!"
"Next time you go thru my yard, go 'round"
"Park your cars side by each"
and my personal favorite:
"I put my shoes out on the porch last night, I went out this morning and there
they were, gone!"

Given the French influence, I'd say that Kerry has Woonsocket locked.

Well, we pay to park...like most places I reckon. With the exception of
Narragansett, where those fuckers running the town actually charge people to
*walk* onto their town beach. So I don't go, AND I fart in their general
direction whenever possible.

When did Plymouth Plantation get moved inside the border of the Ocean

Last I checked, The Mayflower, The Rock & the Plantation were all in the

Here in b-e-a-utiful NJ, we also have to fork over the cash to use our
beaches and lay our blankets next to those "Jersey Beach Whistles".
Prices range anywhere from $5.00 to $10.00 a day, depending on the day
(weekday or weekend) and the beach selected.

I was shocked that there are Portugese neighborhoods. They are talked
about as a separate ethnic group. Until I went to RI & TPP I thought
the Portugese were just regular white people!

Then I worked with a ton of them at a plastics factory in Warwick
(pronounced Warrick). Yup, they're a separate ethnic group.

Portagee. Weird.

I saw a game there once. It was pretty neat, like being caught in a

No one pays a dime to park at a beach anywhere on the west coast, its
all free. Every beach in RI & TPP is either private, as in you have to
have a sticker saying you live in that town, or you pay cash.

At least it used to be that way. Barrington had armed guards to keep
out the riff raff from Warren & Bristol.

I loved when people would say they were going to the shoa. I thought it
was some Jewish thing until I thought about for a bit.

And there is no "Rhode Island" in the state that I'm aware of. Not to
mention almost none of the state is on any island at all.

Block Island excepted, as it usually is.

Ahhh, but you are WRONG, blackjack breath and former Warrick resident.
Aquidneck Island, which is where I was raised and matured into the pillar of
the community I am today, is indeed an island. Portsmouth High, class of '76.
Newport and Middletown making up the rest of the island. Fun place to grow
up....tall ships and bicentennial occurred 2 weeks after my 18th birthday and
HS graduation.

Then there is Jamestown, Hog, Prudence, Goat, and a few others I can't recall.

The Block is one hellava cool place, isn't it?

You didn't know Rob Fogg when you worked at that plastic place did you?

And, young peon, I lived in BARRINGTON, not Warwick. Barrington, where
the skies and the blood are both blue.

not that there weren't a few islands. What is the "Rhode" for?

Uh, well, yeah, but not really my style if ya know what I mean.

WIIAAHS on Block Island?

> You didn't know Rob Fogg when you worked at that plastic place did you?

Gosh, I don't think I remember anybody's name from back then. Wait, one
of the Portagee machine operators was named Chago. I remember that
one. That man ate more donuts than Homer Simpson.

Jay Printing........probably outsourced to India by now.

This discussion has really got my mind going back.......no beer
available on Sundays, my cousin taking me to downtown Providence for
beer and pickled eggs at the Hope Cafe, that slut from the RI School of
Design, Roger Williams State Park, that incredible 4th of July parade in
Warren (or was it Bristol), New York System hot dogs, frosted schooners,
abandoned factories everywhere, a guy telling me he was taking his boat
to the shoa and therefore needed some days off (long drive--all the way
across the state from his house), all those towns with West or North
etc. as a prefix of their real names, yet with no town existing without
the north or south in front of it (N. Kingston, but no Kingston?), boats
everywhere, a mayor holding guns to people's heads, and a blizzard that
had me in the house for 4 straight days.

Wow, Little Rhody. How much are homes going for these days? I hear
Providence is actually nice now, back in my day it was a decayed remnant
of a city.

I'm pretty curious about the price thing if you can help.

Right.....it's PROVIDENCE Plantation, not Plymouth Plantation. AFAIK, there
actually was a Providence Plantation in Rhode Island, unlike Rhode Island,
which you can't find in Rhode Island. You'll have to excuse us

About Rhode Island...

I guess you "youngsters" are all too young, but Rhode Island was the home
of the Newport Folk Festival. And that my friends was the precursor for
Woodstock.

I attended from 1965-1969, and during those years, it was the greatest
music festival anywhere in the world!

And, that was when Newport was a Navy town. Each summer, the pre-hippies
descended on the town...and it was just a great, phenomenal party. One of
the best I've ever attended! The first few years, everyone was drunk. The
last few years, everyone was drunk and tripping. Ahhh...the good old days
;-)

I also attended the Jazz Fest in 1969, which was pretty crazy itself. That
was just 2 weeks before Woodstock. It was the same as Woodstock, only
different ;-)

I remember looking out over the field on the last Saturday night. It felt
like just before the Fall of the Roman Empire, with the barbarians at the
gates. There were fires everywhere, thousands dancing on the hillsides,
and free flowing intoxicants. And, then Sly Stone let loose the words that
ended the Newport Festivals: "Hey you, on the hills. Break down the
fences, and come on in." He then launched into "I want to take you
higher" and all hell broke loose, in a wonderful, fantastic LSD-fueled
hippie frenzy...from which Rhode Island probably never recovered.

Those were some great years for us young hippies.

Joe

IIAAHSWYPII?

Seriously though. My grandparents owned a beach house in Amagansett NY (long
before it was a place for the "beautiful people" to hang out) I spent a
great deal time hanging out in Montauk Point by the Lighthouse. Block Island
and Fishers Island are both visible from the point, and I was always under
the impression that they were part of NY state (I know that Fishers Island
is, even thought the only access is the Ferry from New London, CT.

An interesting side note about my Grandparents house in Amagansett is that
in 1942 a German U-boat landed 8 German spys less than a mile from my their
house.
My Mother, Aunt and Grandmother all knew the Coast Guardsman who discovered
them when they landed. My grandparents and my Mom had great stories about
what it was like on the end of Long Island during WWII. Even when I was a
kid during the early 60's stuff from ships that had been sunk during WWI
would occasionally wash up on the beach (the #best# was the tar balls that
were created by the bunker oil from sunken ships. YUCK!!!!)

Sounds like you might live either in the southern part of the state

I am between Bay Head and Lavallette. It is my front yard, but the
actual beach is owned by a beach club, so everyone from the ocean to the
bay owns the beach, conversely I am able to use the playgrounds, the
marina, bay beach etc. I like to call it my beach when they get uppity
with me, it makes them turn red and they feel obliged to explain the
legal aspects of beach ownership.

Most folks really don't bother me, there are just those few who feel the
need to be involved in everyone's life, those are the same ones who are
trying to turn the beach into an ashtray so my response to music
complaints is always a smoking complaint. They did send me 2 certified

John, take a deep breath, hold.............and release. Now, repeat.

Now a big smile out to ya!! :) :) :)

You'll have a heart attack if you watch the horserace steadily for the next
four months. Sure, follow the post-convention bounces, but other than that,
even in October, it's premature to be adding up electoral votes in an
election so close. We might as well just enjoy the summer and leave the
polling to Zogby and Gallup for the next 90 days. Lord knows, ain't nothing
we can do about it until the rest of the nation starts paying attention to
presidential politics, some time after Labor Day. Before then, it would
take a scandal of truly monumental proportions to have any significant
impact on the results.

Peace,

Well, just following up on the poster who noted that Bush was up within
hours of my posting Kerry was in the lead.

It reinforces the title of this thread, the horse race aspect.

It's possible that parking might cost, but all beaches in
California have been free and open to the public since the
Coastal Conservation Act was passed in 1972.

I think there's only exception. The beach that's the western
border of Vandenberg Air Force base is closed during launches
from the Spaceport. For safety and security.

The people of California own all the beaches in California,
and no one can charge to use the beach. Parking your car is
another story.

Wow, thats a pretty damn good RI synopsis.

The parade is in Bristol, oldest 4th of July parade in the country.
Buddy Cianci is in federal prison for 6 years.
I think I knew that slut from RISD.
I was at URI during the blizzard of '78...we ended up drinking Billy Beer by
the end of the week because the stores couldn't get deliveries in. Awful
stuff, even for a college kid.
There is a North Kingstown (where I live), a South Kingstown, and a Kingston,
where URI is located, which really isn't a town but is a part of South
Kingstown. Got it?

Providence is a beautiful city now, nothing like the 70's or early 80's. They
build a gorgeous downtown area with a riverwalk, outdoor restaurants...its been
a pretty amazing renaissance.

Housing prices have gone nuts in RI over the last 3 years. 30-35% appreciation
per year. Totally bonkers. 4 bed, 2.5 bath, 3000 sq. ft = $550-600k.

Taxes suck, but it is one beautiful place to live.

Holy Christ!

As soon as my house appreciates another 50-100k I'm moving to Bend
Oregon where a nice 3 bed 2 bath on a half acre can be had for 200k.

But after I get there, nobody else can move in. We future Benders hate
immigrants from CA & NV.

Thayer St. was nice during the '70s.

Still cheap compared to prices in Southern Cal.

The area around Bend is gorgeous. We had thought about moving there a few years
back, but housing at that time didn't offer us much more than what we had in
western WA. Seems the prices there have been pretty stable and now the way the
housing market has gone up out here, Bend is much more attractive. Steve

Just move Mt Bachelor, and no one would want to move to Bend.

I went to Thayer Street last month. I think it's gone downhill a bit
from the 70's. The East Side is still very nice. Downtown, however,
was a significant improvement. The Waterfire was very nice, and well
worth seeing. Now I just gotta get back to Al Forno ...

I don't ski.

I'm moving to Bend.

They even have a nice, brand new amphitheater that features lower level
national touring acts now. This month its Jewel, Keith Urban, and
Heart.

Not like I'd pay to see any of that, but at some point SOMEONE I would
want to see will be playing there.

Its a place that has everything I could ever want, including a beautiful
new retirement center for my mother.

I'm glad you're staying in Marin. Like I said, we future Oregonians
hate immigrants!

I don't know if it's still the case, but many years ago, Bend was
having traffic problems because there were two many cars for its one
main road to handle.

I'm hoping to go up there in August for a few days so I guess I'll find
out.

If they were having problems a few years ago, they must really be having
problems now unless they did something to fix it. About 10,000 people
have moved there since 2000.

Of course compared to Vegas traffic it would be literally nothing no
matter how bad it is.

And yes, SoCal has more traffic than Vegas so you win that one, Seth!

I ove those people. They sell their California homes for ridiculous
profits, move to Vegas, and drive our housing costs up like crazy.
YES! They're gonna make me rich and able to move to a nice town.

We're not selling our home any time in the foreseeable future. We want
our kids to attend the excellent public schools our city offers. They
start kindergarten in September.

True, but its not like anyone who lives here ever gets stuck in that.

Ha. I looked into Coos Bay since I'd love to live by the ocean, but
anything near the water is cost prohibitive for me. Plus it rains an
awful lot for me to live there fulltime.

But oh yeah, if this move were to ever happen I'll be on the lookout for
Oregon rmgd'ers.
