Scored the last Pure Jerry's...

Well as I continue on my quest to fill the holes in my
collection... I have always tried for the elusive Pure Jerry's I'm
missing (Hampton, and Bay Area) on ebay. Without paying $200 a piece,
it's hard to catch em.
Tried to get them in bundles, or mis-spelled postings... or once when
someone listed a Jerry Garcia Lot for $100 and Bay Area was in
there...

But I never catch it... and once in a rare while they show up in the
Amazon marketplace.

So the other night I'm sitting watching tv at 1am (EST) and thinking I
need to just check Amazon marketplace for Pure Jerry Hampton.
There it is.. used.. $149, 159, 189... and new, $50. $50????
1 left.
Got it.

On a whim, checked Bay Area...ued $179, 189, $200.... $55.
$55??????? new? Yep. From the same seller.
I couldn't bite on this one.
Went to bed... woke up, and pulled the trigger.

2 days later (being, yesterday) Hampton arrived. Listened to it. Very
good disc!
Today, Bay Area arrived.... listening to it now. Pretty good! Worth
the $50. Not $200. :-)


Only one tough find left to go.. View from the vault 2... I really
want that one, I was at the 1990 show at RFK.

Then just a few Dicks Picks (4,7,8,12,23, 26-33, 36) and I've got
everything.

AND... Got my May 1977 box on order....
Just rolling in the good music lately. :-D

The Viwe From The Vault Soundtrack is verry hard to come by. I once
saw a listing on ebay for $150 or so. I'm looking for a pressed
compact disc of this release, too.

for any GD or GD related disc. Why?....anyone here will
burn you discs....you must have serious throw away $$$.

I tried to reason to him about burning cd-r, he'd rather have the
pressed silver compact discs. Have you checked the prices of Real Gone
Music's Dick's Pick reissues? Their prices are a bit steep and are
almost on par or higher than some used GD discs on ebay.

Jesus fucking mighty. Send him the flacs, he can burn a new disc every day until he dies, if that's what he's into. But I've *never* had a cd go bad on me - not the expensive TYs, not the piece of shit drugstore blanks. If I took care of them. And that really just means not letting beer or grit or chewing tobacco get on the discs or in the sleeves. And when did I start burning . . . 97? 98? Can't remember. Not one disc gone bad. Obviously, the sample isn't every disc I've burned, it's every disc I've played. But - not one has gone bad.

That guy would be better served by accepting your kind offer and spending his money on the beer that Sweets reviews positiviely instead of going all collector and shit.

One of the Hampton's just sold yesterday for $35 on ebay but the case
was literally shredded.

And that's not to say, at all, that I think that spending money on audio equipment is ridiculous. I've hemmed and hawed for a few years, now, on how to move to the next level . . . I'm now slowly researching DAC / Amps that will accept usb input and drive good speakers. I'll get the amp, first, and use the PSB speakers that've been in a closet for the last ten years. Then, when I have more money, I'll get some decent speakers. I think that'll be the best I can do.

Well, my buddies and I just penciled in 2015 as the year of our return to the Sierras, so the bigger rods will finally get some use. Gone are the days of general activity keeping me in decent shape. I'm going to start training, umm, soon.

Not sure what gear you have at present, but I send digital off a laptop
with 24 bit capability via SPDIF into a Benchmark DAC1 that feeds analog
out to a vintage McIntosh pre amp. Newer Benchmarks also have USB input.
Decent mid price DAC, run you about 1100 bucks. If you have an amp you're
happy with now, any decent DAC would be the way to go. Nothing ridiculous
about spending a few bucks on audio equipment.

Well, I've been looking at Benchmark's stuff, as well as others.

Right now, I'm running out of the laptop's built in sound card to a pair m-audio av40s. What I have is the best I can afford, at this time, but I'm in the budget/research phase to upgrade.

I want a unit that's got both an integrated amp and decent (meaning, for me, basement level audiophile) dac. I'm poor. I want audiophile gear, but just-barely-got-my-foot-in-the-door level audiophile gear. My budget for the unit I'm looking for will be in the, say, $700 to $1200 range. I'm going to listen to a pair of bookshelf PSBs, which I love, which I will be happy with until I can afford something better. Again, at that point in time, my budget will be in the $700 to $1200 range for speakers.

Then I'll be left with the problem of getting decent quality portable sound out on the deck. I solve that now by having a highish-end iOS device dock that's got a rechargeable battery in it. Since it's charging all the time, in the kitchen, I just unplug it and drag it out to the deck when I'm spending time out there. It works ok, it serves the purpose. But the funny thing about it is that I'm fine "losing" my iPad or iPhone to the dock when I'm cooking or doing house errands, but when I'm relaxing on the deck I usually want to actually *use* the iPad for reading or whatever, so I've got the iOS dock out there with never quite the right thing to plug into it. Keeping all those devices loaded up with what I want to hear is a pain in the ass, anyway. I want to play from my 8+TBs of online storage. I like the monkeymote remote control on the iPad, I want to use that to control my laptop that's in the house to play through the new amp/dac to some new kind of portable speaker.

Hope nobody minds, but I'm going to repeat this stuff in a new thread, I
always learn and get pleasure from what people are doing and what they plan
to do. That goes for both the people who can afford and are excited by the
true high end stuff that I'll never get, and those who scrabble together
cool / impressive systems with less than big budgets.

I think Neil evaluated and rejected a Peachtree integrated amp when he got
his awesome new system a couple/few years ago. Sorry if I have that wrong,
Neil. If NAD came out with what I wanted in my price range, I'd put it at
the top of my list for evaluation, I've always liked their stuff in my poor
man trying to get decent sound category.

Completely agree on the benefits of cds, I like liner notes and being able to hold the music in my hands. Lately the only time I dl shit is when I know I can't get it on cd, today was Jaco's Word of Mouth Big Band at the NYC Savoy 1982, a show that I was at. But that's the first thing I've dled in months.

Monkeymote rules. I take the iPad into the kitchen and stream from the
hd while I'm cooking, also use it remotely to change music on the big
system and modify playlists without having to get up and go to the computer.

I was thinking maybe you had the amp that powered those speakers in the
closet with them, in which case a DAC would get you playing all that
digital stuff sooner. What I like about component systems is you can
upgrade as you can afford to. If you still have the old amp, I'll
suggest Cambridge Audio's DacMagic, which is somewhat less expensive
than my previous suggestion, there's at least one person still posting
here that is happy with the performance he gets out of his.

You might also look at used gear on craigslist, etc. I got my DAC for
about half price from a local person who had upgraded and advertised
via AudioGon, which is a high end online marketplace.

I've got to run now, I'll add more if this discussion continues...

I still use the Grace in the living room, but a Metric Halo ULN-8 lives in my home studio and serves for mixing down, as well as listening to music (including vinyl as it has RIAA built into its DSP).
These days I spend a lot more time listening there.

I have two more LIO-8s with preamps for my remote recording rig. Great company!

Nice, but perhaps a little more than I need in the living room at present.
I'm pretty satisfied with the Benchmark thus far, I've had it a few years
now with no problems, and it does sound sweet. I did check out Grace when
I was looking, Not much different from Benchmark when running through
speakers, though I think the Grace has the superior headphone system.
But I'm not big on headphones, so I settled for the BM, which I got used at
a bargain. The other thing I like about the BM is that it is made in the
USA, like Grace and I believe Metric. Even used, I try to buy American
when possible. Also, it's from upstate NY, like the McIntosh gear it's
hooked into.

I'm with you on that. Metric Halo was in upstate NY until a move to Florida last year. The ULN-8 does interface quite well with my MC2105!

BM does have a great rep. I haven't had the chance to listen to any of them yet, though.

I'm also pretty spoiled using the LIOs for my in ear monitor mix. Sounds like a record, every night!
