I couldn't possibly have an answer to this question, Sweets, but I'm
guessing your paying customers probably likes it best when you go multiple
weeks before changing.

You need to go down to Cedar St. in Berkeley and have a word with Fat Dawg at Subway.

Personally I use DRs. Sunbeams for some basses and then whatever seems good at the moment for guitar. I got a deal with them, but I still pay. I also will dabble with Pyramid Gold flats on the bass if
I want to be all super 1972 authentic.

My local Best Buy has Boomers and Slinky for $3.97 a set as a regular price.
Bass string are cheap as well, but they only have 4 string sets. No
shipping.I gots to buy lots-o-strings for the multitude of instruments that
reside here with me.

I like Sweetwater. They also extend warranties 1 year.

I don't particularly like the brightness of brand new strings (luckily
for me).

If a string breaks or if the intonation starts getting off, I change
the set.

I feel the exact same way. I really do not like the sound of new strings. I also usually change when one breaks. I buy different stuff, really based on the packaging, but then again, I am not a professional musician. However, bass always gets flat wounds.

Who doesn't like a nice fresh set of strings?
I changed the ones on my Ibanez Artcore yesterday....
cleaned the frets/neck...joy....absolute joy.
I havent changed the strings on the bass I bought a few
months ago...what are good brands?..or does it matter?
I'm assuming wound are the way to go...unwound for fretless?
I cant see changing bass strings but a couple times a year.

I'm a hobbyist so I don't see a point in changing strings a lot. Mostly I wait till I break one. I change a little more often I my acoustics. I appreciate the change in brightness more on the acoustic. I prefer the elixir strings. I think they are made by ibanez. They are a little more expensive but they last longer and in my opinion sound better. Especially on acoustic. I don't mess with the bass strings at all. I've bought a few things on sweet water as well. I think I got my Gibson 175 from them.

You have a 175?...That Inbanez I have is a 175 knockoff.....
a great git for the price.
Post a pic of that axe, Sparks

James Jamerson only replaced a string if one broke. He sounded pretty
good. I like the cleanliness of new strings but not the brightness.
You got an amp you can adjust if you want it bright ...

I went back to Dean Markleys but there's been a little rust on them
out of the package. Not sure if it is a bad batch. When I've through
the sets I have on hand, I'll give them another try. If the next batch
has rust, time for something different.

I'd consider DRs for bass based on Edwin's recommendation. I just got
a Rick 4003 but it will be a long while before it needs new strings.

Rounds for bright snappy tones, flats for old school. Phil sounds are definitely flatwounds, especially up through the mid 70s (although not the LaBella/Rotosound flat tone, more Pyramids).

I use DR Sunbeams for rounds. Great strings. Thomstik Jazz Flats or Pyramid Golds for flats, unless it's a long scale, in which case, the DR flats are very nice.

Not necessarily. My starfire gets new strings every 5 years or so. Flats can last quite a while.

Rounds are a different case, but the Sunbeams can go a couple months of steady gigging.

I don't change them on my Tele until I have to. On my D-28 I change when they go flat.
Sweetwater is great. I putchased a Fender DRRI a couple years ago on sale for $800 new. The guy calls me a month later to ask how I like the amp. Really nice dude. I'm definitely a repeat customer now.

Man....I have a hard time buying new stuff....I guess if I
had endless cash flow I would, but I just wait it out and buy
everything ( 'cept strangs) used....that Squire Jaguar i picked
up a few months ago....I went to git center....played 'em....
checked out the body/pickguard colour I dug...then went home
and scoured Craigslist...sure enough, 2 weeks later, there it was...
new was $299....+ tax....no case....
I got mine for $200....no tax....with a case.
Sure, there wasn't the instant gratification, but you DO get a high when
you hook up a deal and know you've saved a buncha bread.

Sort of. They have a lot better service in the pro audio world. For inexpensive musical instruments, the difference is probably not that big, but when it comes to customer service for expensive and
complex pro audio stuff, I'd definitely head to Sweetwater before MF (aka Guitar Center). Even before that, I'd go to the locals, Wind Over The Earth or Sweetwave. No guitars, amps or strings there,
though.

Dave, thanks for this. I bought mando strings for my son. $6.95/set for D'Addarios. As soon as I placed the order I get a phone call from them thanking me. Then, when the strings came they sent along a little baggie with candy inside. I'll be back.

No problemo, Dan-O...Quite frankly, I'm actually more concerned
about you allowing your son to play mandolin...
what's next?...washtub bass?
Disgusted.

Damn, changes my view of MF completely. Time to check out Sweetwater.
Though I did buy my son's recent DW performance kit from
http://longislanddrum.com/. Guy has a Dead connection if you look him up
and a pleasure to deal with, a real pro and nice as can be. Sells to plenty
of NY area studio and touring drummers,
