Golden Earing: "Radar Love"
Mountain: "Theme from an Imaginary Western"
George Strait: "Amarillo by Morning."
Quicksilver Messenger Service: "Rebel"
Marshall Tucker Band: "This Old Cowboy"
Patty Smythe: "Because the Night"
We've done favorite albums and favorite non-GD groups, and I left
Santana and Sherryl Crow off that last post DOH, but I thought this
might be interesting.

you need to hear more.
Mountain has a bunch of great songs. Nantucket Sleighride, Long Red, Blood
of the Sun, Mississippi Queen, Never In my Life. and more.
Quicksilver also, I love their body of work. John Cippolina was great.Fresh
Air, Shady Grove, Doin Time in the USA,
Marshall Tucker is my number one all-underrated band.
Golden Earing a Dutchband only had the one U.S. hit but if you listen to
them you'll find they had a solid catalogue and a good long career, I think
they still play.
Sheryl Crow was IMO routinely terrible.
I saw Patti Smith open for the Dead at U-Mass, she was very good{you
confused her spelling with the the other Patty Smyth who did 'I am the
Warrior'}
I don't need to hear these songs OR their wonders, thank you. I have
grown up and progressed.
> Patty Smythe: "Because the Night"
Uh... I think you meant Patti Smith. Patty Smythe is the on who did
the forgettable duet with Don Henley.
> Golden Earing a Dutchband only had the one U.S. hit but if you listen to

Don't forget about the "Twilight Zone" hit!
Man did the 80s music suck.
Big big difference between the P. Smiths, I saw her at Amhearst too
and got to talk to her about it last winter, what a wonderful person
she is, I felt like I was having an audience with the queen and she
was as humble and gracious as could be-a couple of good Garcia stories
too.
Dusty Springfield "Son of a Preacher Man" I f'ing love that song
Blues Image "Ride Captain Ride", although they also do a killer
"Parchman Farm"
Joan Jett "Put another Nickel.."
"Liar" - Queen
"Liar" - Three Dog Night
"Whatcha Gonna Do About Me"? - QMS
"Rock Me, Amadeus" - Falco
"Green Eyed Lady" - Sugarloaf
"Magic Moments" - Perry Como
TOG
Uh... I saw Golden Earring do "Radar", "Twilight", and other non-hits
(anyone remember Candy's Going Bad?) in 1975, which, if my math is
correct, is a bit before the 80's. It was a three way bill, T-Rex,
Golden Earring, and BOC. It should have been the other way around
'cause T-Rex definitely didn't suck at all and Golden Earring sucked
way less than BOC.
> Uh... I saw Golden Earring do "Radar", "Twilight", and other non-hits
Uh.. I might be wrong about Golden Earring playing "Twilight" that
night. My bad.
"Liar" - Henry Rollins Band

Mountain's hit single was "Mississippi Queen" (although I realize you're
using "hit" in the sense of personal tastes rather than chart success). I
enjoy Mountain's early work, their live album recorded in Japan gets played
around here quite often, as well as a couple of their official bootlegs.
They're not a challenging band, you don't have to push the envelope of the
sort of music you appreciate to enjoy their work. But nonetheless they were
very good at what they did--they too serve who rock real hard (with some
style and imagination). Some of Leslie West's solo output is also pretty
good, although the reformed version of Mountain I saw perform a couple of
years ago was a feeble thing, they weren't really trying.
Yeah, Patti Smith is definitely on my list of "10 favorite non-GD
musicians."
Peace,
Neil X.

Marshall Tucker is scarcely a one hit wonder outfit, though their post-
"Carolina Dreams" albums never did much for me. Their early albums
hooked me solidly into Southern rock, well before I got onto ABB.
Dave
I didn't mention one-hit wonders. I meant groups or individuals who
only had one song that did it for _you_
Marshall Tucker, Golden Earring and some of the others are clearly
groups I _could_ get into but there's only so much time.
==============================================================================
every act has their clunkers, even the Dead
Twilight Zone was an 80s song, which was a rather bad decade for music.
> Marshall Tucker Band: "This Old Cowboy"
RUFK?
Anybody who puts the MTB on this tweet of a list does not know of what
they speak. MTB was far from one hit wonders. At one time they were
close to rivaling the ABB(yes, post Oakley and Duanne). Toy Caldwell
was one of the finest guitar players around. Their country rock
combined with jazz sensibilities led them to oh about 5 gold records.
Yeah, 1 hit wonders. If you have never "listened" to A New Life, or
Where We All belong is missing something
I still remember the day vividly when they blew the doors off ABB at
MIle High in June of 74. Of course gregg was pretty fucked up. It was
agreat loss when Caldwell died.
Can't you See
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEOV5vWfSgI&feature=related
yeah they suck!
They were probably the 4th fave band in my high school after Dead,
NRPS and Springsteen, Where We All Belong was blasting out of windows
everywhere. I saw them Boston Garden with Dave Mason and NRPS 1975
and a couple times after. Great great band. Anyone know how Toy
Caldwell died? I know Tommy was a car accident, both way too young.
He died of "respiratory failure" his heart gave out after years of hard
living{drugs and booze}
MTB never got the success I feel they deserved.
I was at that garden show too.
in fact I'm amazed at how many folks mention shows here in Boston I went to
too.
no song has a better start than Can't You See, I just love the way it swells
up to a start.
I still remember the first time I heard of them, a TV special called "A
night with the Allman Brothers" it was in the early 70s when quality rock
was rare on Primetime Network TV.
My first trip west was for backpacking and flyfishing in the Uintahs
in '92. Six guys, two jeeps. On the way home, the jeep I was in had
three tapes - "American Beauty," the Band's "To Kingdom Come," and the
Marshall Tucker Band's "Carolina Dreams." Got to know it well.
A real strong memory of my youth was seeing Mountain at Woodstock,
performing Theme From An Imaginary Western. I can close my eyes, and
almost see that whole insane scene again.
Ahhhh...to be young.
I think that was on Saturday, the afternoon I took the Brown Acid.
I'd started the day off, sleeping in a tent about 6 miles from the
festival. We were stalled in traffic the night before, said fuck it, let's
walk. And then we walked back to our tent after the first night's show was
over at what seemed like a reasonable time.
The next morning, my first sight on looking outside the tent was seeing a
naked guy, jumping around, ranting, raving, screaming, sounding crazy, and
selling LSD for $1 a hit. Whoa, I thought. That sure looked like a great
endorsement for me. I got some for me and the wife, and we were off...
That morning, when everyone in my party got it together, we joined what
looked like a fabulous freak parade, walking those last 6 miles, once
again, got settled in, and I think Mountain played mid-afternoon. An hour
or two after eating The Brown Acid.
So, I was more than just a little impaired by the time Mountain came on,
but they were just fantastic, that one and only time I ever saw them. In
all their glory. A fine, wonderful memory to be pulled up all these years
later.
Say what you will about Mountain, they sure brought some joy into my life,
and here I am, 40 years later, smiling while just thinking about it. Wow.
Thanks for the memories.
Joe
Marshall Tucker Band also opened for the Dead once - Englishtown
9/3/77. I found them to be rather ordinary.

I went to the sold-out show at Madison Square Garden to see the
Marshall Tucker. Of course there have been line-up switches over
time.
I was up there close too. In those days when they sold out they meant
SOLD OUT. Not 3/4ths sold out.
Learn to read for comprehension. That was their only song that made a
big impression on me. I'm sure, knowing generally what they are like,
that I would like their other work. But there is only so much time and
I never got around to it.
This isn't a list of bad performers with one song you happen to like.
It is a list of songs you like by people you have not heard much more.
I don't _think_ there's a group or performer on my original list I
would not call good.
--
Will in New Haven
At one time they were
- The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony
- Sugar - Helpless
I bought this CD (Copper Blue) like a kid takes medicine, based on the
Alt-cred reputation that would Improve Me, and was surprised when a big
pop hit I actually like blasted out at me.
- Todd Rungren - Hello It's Me
He's got plenty of other good stuff - "I Saw The Light" gives it a go as
the best song on that album - but what can I say, he had me at "Hello."
As for true one-hit wonders I keep around:
- Looking Glass - Brandy
- Johnny Nash - I Can See Clearly Now
- Fastball - The Way
and something in between:
- Enigma - Sadeness Pt. 1 -->
- PM Dawn - Set Adrift On Memory Bliss
the two of them segued together on an MTV "Party To Go" CD is pretty much
the last great thing MTV ever did.
It is,of course, a Jack Bruce song.
Mountain was originally going to be West with Bruce{and Corky Lang} they
even eventually cut an album.
but Bruce couldn't get a visa to enter the U.S. so Felix Pappalardi took
over the bass.
I've always wonder what horrible act or how bad a junkie Bruce must have
been to be denied entry, after all they always let Keith Richards in and let
John Lennon live here..
and Brian Jones, fired from the Stones because he did too much drugs and
began missing shows
how freakin bad are you when Mick and Keith think you are a problem and
that you do too much drugs.

Sounds like a nice trip. decent album selection
its the thread title you chose. don't bitch at us for you poor choice.
and anyway, once you start a thread you no longer have creative/editorial
control.
The thread title is "one-song wonders." It is clear what I meant by
it. The being I replied to decided to assume that I was denying that
the MTB had any real merit, ala the "one-hit wonder" lists you see on
TV and so on.
I can reply to his comment any way I please, especially since it was
directed at me. Having started the thread had nothing to do with it.
He misinterpreted what I said.
You should read for comprehension, you being you.
You are still incredibly wrong. MTB were not one hit wonders in any
shape or means. Anybody saying they were does not know what one hit
wonders are. Radar Love? sure. MTB no fucking way.
The song you referenced was off their 3rd or 4th album. Previous ones
already having gone gold.
So tell me with a string of hits BEFORE and AFTER the tunes you
referenced you think they can be classified one hit wonders? Just
because you think they were one hit wonders for whatever reason you
had no exposure to them at the time does not make it so no matter how
many times you say it. The Marshall Tucker Band were NOT one hit
wonders.
I never said they were, asshole. I said that only one of their songs
had caught my attention. I never once said "one-hit" anything. "One-
song wonder" was supposed to be something _personal_ not a judgment on
how good the performer was. I had never noticed much of what they did
other than that song. I'm not complimenting myself for that but that
was the case. Why don't you just make up posts to rag people about
since you can't be bothered to read what people actually write.
I never said that they weren't good. You are a complete pile of shit
who is insisting on criticizing me for something I never said or
implied. Why don't you go fuck yourself. And take Ray O'Hara with
you.

Anybody saying they were does not know what one hit
>
> I never said they were, asshole. I said that only one of their songs
> had caught my attention.
oh it was just a tweet kind of a thing huh? Yeah it was real important
to let everybody you don't know very much about MTB. NTTIAWWT
Perhaps you are wrapped too tight to start topics on your own.
have a great night! lol
It was supposed to be FUN, asshole. Most of the performers on that
list were people I might have really liked if I had taken the time.
Any list with "Amarillo by Morning" on it _can't_ be a list of one-hit
wonders. Strait has a ton of hits, several bigger than AbyM. But the
list wasn't "one-hit wonders" or "bad performers who made one good
song.": It was songs that caught my attention when the performer's
other songs hadn't and other people responded in a similar vein. No
one else, except maybe O'Hara managed to misunderstand.
Maybe you are stupid. Perhaps you are too big a piece of shit to be
around people who are trying to enjoy themselves. Or maybe you could
take remedial civilization.
And what does "to let everybody you don't know very much about MTB"
Well, I don't doubt you know more about MTB than I do. And I probably
would have liked paying more attention to them. But you can't do
everything. Noe go fucking yell at someone else.
Yeah, you're right there.
Gee, I wonder why folks might think you're talking about one-hit
wonders, given the thread title of "one-song wonders." The problem
here is your poor communication skills, not the folks who you've
labeled as assholes for misunderstanding your fractured prose.
HTH,
Neil X.
I just re-read my original post and I think you are wrong. However, if
you only read the title of the thread and the list of songs, you might
get it wrong. And I pretty much that fairly often myself. Certainly I
don't read everything as carefully as I might. However, if I were
going to lay into someone for calling a band a one-hit wonder, I think
I would take another look at the post. If, having laid into someone, I
got a response claiming he didn't _say_ what I thought he said, I
might re-read the original post, unless I was determined to be angry.
Which it certainly seems you were.
Fred
Did you read the reply that started this? He was defending the
Marshall Tucker Band as if I had attacked them, which I had not. Then,
when I told him that's not what I was doing, he made basically the
same post, ignoring my response. If there was room to mis-read my
original post, which there clearly was, I think my explanation might
have been good enough for most people. But he came right back in the
same angry, scornful fashion. So I got, temporarily, annoyed.
There were people who understood what I was doing and I enjoyed
reading their responses.
You're big mistake was trying to reason with Jeff.
JimK
Dude you have bee here way long enough to know that Jeff is not most
people. For reasons best known to him, he takes alternative takes on
stuff as personal affronts.
> But he came right back in the

Well, Will, you certainly trumped him in the scorn dept., so there ya
go. It was a right enjoyable little dust uplette.
Fred
>

What Deadheads are eFrd?
For reasons best known to him, he takes alternative takes on
> stuff as personal affronts.

Never personal affronts Fred. Perhaps loud astonishment. Having more
to do with the hypocritical acceptance of lunacy, often teh smae, from
some but not others. I should never have given up the more frequent
use of lol's and ; ) Since I never adapted to the uber hip replacement
of those, with the cynical ##'s
I just learned from the best around here, and tried to emulate to
survive when I joined this place 9 years or so ago. The decoder ring
never showed up.
Oh for the record, I was not the one calling others names in this
thread. And was never angry. And I might have gotten around to
saying , "oh you mean this is a list of single songs you like from
these bands?" Whatever that means.
Except for the breakdown that followed was more exciting with little
goading or prompting from me.
Peace
eJff
This was little or no prompting from you?
"You should read for comprehension, you being you.

So after I clarified that I wasn't calling MTB a one-hit band, you
replied "how could you call them" what I didn't call them.
Ok, you can't read. I should try not to take it personally. Just
another failur of our edumacational system.
