Charlie Daniels suffered a mild stroke on Friday (Jan. 15) while
snowmobiling during a vacation in Colorado. Daniels was treated at a
medical center in Durango, Colo., after the stroke and was then
airlifted to a Denver hospital, where he was released on Sunday (Jan.
17). He is recovering at his home in Colorado, where he has been on
vacation since Dec. 27. No concert dates are expected to be canceled,
according to his publicist

Did ya see the most recent commercial for Giaco with Charlie Daniels
in it?
Kinda funny....
Good luck to Charlie,
but I can think of plenty of better fiddlers.
Vassar Clements, Darol Anger, Mark O'Conner Byron Berline to name just ta
few.
I'm not saying Charlie can't play but the best? hardly.

The Wereo features a better fiddle than Charlie Daniels in Dan Seals. And it
came a year before Daniels' fiddle thing.
Goes to show how far the brainwash of classic rock can go. I am the only one
who matters in music, thank you.

That commercial is making me think seriously about leaving Geico.
Charlie Daniels is a bigoted condescending asshole.
Just my opinion, which is like the above mentioned anatomical structure.
Aiyeed.

Jasha Heifetz and I had a good chuckle over that.
Just came back from my dad's memorial ceremony si I guess
Whoops I was gonna say something about the fact that he was a red neck
douchebag and not all that good a fiddle player, but at this point who
gives a shit. He pretty much sucked, minor league all around. Next.
What's the difference between a violin and a fiddle? Nobody cries
when they spill beer on a fiddle.
Vasser Clements. Charlie Daniels would have to pull the fiddle out of
his ass and manicure it to get anywhere near that guy. Plus he was a
redneck douchebag, 0 for 2.
I caught Gatemouth Brown and Vassar Clements together back in the 80s in
Harvard Sq. killer show.
part way through the show these two dudes sat next to us, one turned to me
and asked "who are these guys?".
I looked at him puzzled and said Clarence Brown and Vassar Clements, he
said "who?" I said it again, he then asked me
"Isn't Clarence Clemmons playing here tonite?"
Ahh, I would argue that Charlie has more chops than Clements. Beyond
that, he's one hell of a guitar player. Check out some of the early
CDB records. It's like listening to the Allman Brothers on speed.
-JC
Papa John had limited chops. Played with a lot of soul though. I
caught him on several occassions with Kantner back in the day.
-JC
I can't stand Charlie's politics either, but your statement is way
off. Charlie is an incredibly talented musician. And he's not a
master of just one instrument either.
-JC
Ray is 100% correct (??!!??).

Oooh! Ooooh! Can we do a top 100 fiddle players list?!?!?
Allie Kral. Hell of a fiddler. Waaaay better looking than any of the
dudes mentioned in this thread. And I am blissfully unaware of her
politics. I saw Cornmeal open for Railroad Earth a few months back.
Before the show I was making fun of the "Cornmeal" name. After I saw
them play I was contrite. Play like that and you can call your band
whatever you want.
Allie Kral is really good - I'm a fan - but she's not in the same
league as Darol Anger or Mark O'Conner. No knock on Allie though - few
are that league.
Another very good fiddle player - in Allie's league if not IMO better
- is Drew Emmitt of Leftover Salmon. And that's not even Drew's
primary instrument, which is the mandolin.
Then there's Alison Krauss - she's primarily known for her
ridiculously beautiful voice but she's no slouch in the fiddle either.

Cornmeal puts on an excellent live show, yeah.
Charlie Daniels has more chops than Vassar Clements? I respect your
knowledge on this stuff JC so I'm either overrating Vassar or
underrating Charlie, or both. Or you could be wrong. :-)
Actually I don't really know what I'm talking about here in that my
exposure to Charlie Daniels is minimal, only what I've heard on the
radio and that's been a long time ago. From what I know of his stuff
it isn't really my thing.

Okay maybe I should know more about his stuff - that sounds
interesting.
=============================================================================
on 9/11 he was punishing us for letting "queers" get married. at least
that's was Pat Roberson and Jerry Falwell said.
I love Allie! She's a sweetheart. Hanging and playing with her is one of
things I miss most about not being with Taxi anymore. Good folks, those
Cornmealers.

I'm not suggesting she is in the O'Conner tier of players. Just
throwin' names out there. It's kinda like him getting the CMA musician
of the year so many times they just hadda stop giving it to him. Let's
just call him fiddle player of the millennium and move on to
recognizing some other very talented players. I've seen Mark O. in at
least one situation where, excellent as he is, he just didn't fit,
namely his stint with the Dregs. Speaking of the Dregs, Allen Sloan
and Jerry Goodman anyone?
Oh stop saying that Ray. You know just about as much as I know about
anything and more.
>so I'm either overrating Vassar or

I'm not saying Vassar is chopless, and I prefer that kind of music
anyway, but I've heard Charlie pull of much quicker runs, with a
greater variety of tones. It's been a while since I've listened to
both, so I may have to take another listen.

I'm talking way before Devil Went Down to Georgia. I like his early
stuff, and some of it is derivative of the Allmans, but Charlie proves
that he is an incredibly talented musician. His voice never did all
that much for me, so it's not like I'm a big fan. But his
musicianship is at a high level, and his politics have nothing to do
with it.
-JC
Jerry Goodman has insane chops. Never been my thing though.
-JC
Even if that were true I'd still respect your knowledge here but I
don't think it's true anyway. As I've said to you before as you know
I'm way into both music and wine and while I can hold my own on both
subjects in my estimation you've got me beat in a general sense (if
ever so slightly :-) on both of them.

Yeah I didn't read it that way - I'd be very surprised if you thought
that.

Yeah that sort of stuff is basically all I know about him - doesn't
grab me.

I'll have to check it out sometime.
Charlie Daniels had his first big hit in 1975. (Devil 85?) He was a
fresh addition to the ABB and Marshall Tucker at the time. Lasted
about one album for most. He was probably more aligned with Marshall
Tucker than ABB, His Long haired Country Boy with the pot reference
was somewhat of a hit on his first album. He was also a supporter of
Jimmie Carter, not sure why he went so nutty. But then Lynard Skynard
did as well. . The first 5 Marshall Tucker Band albums have Charlie
Daniels on fiddle, and his live work on their Where We All belong is
spectacular(as is Toy Caldwell)
But yeah, Vassar Clements work is far more listenable.
I think the only CD I own is on Marshall Tucker Band albums. If you
have never heard the live 24 Hours At A Time from Where We All Belong
you might want to.
Here is one from Volunteer jam, I believe Charlie Daniels had
something to do with them.
For awhile MTB were as hot as anybody. ymmv Nobody combined hippie
jazz country like they did.

ahh nice excuse to listen. Thanks.
Man, Toy Caldwell is soooo unapreciated as is the first 5 MTB albums.
Charlie is gettin here.
Devil 1979, man 30 years ago.

In a way I think Charlie Daniels is the John Popper of the fiddle.
Edwin
Definitely. I saw the Dixie Dregs first at the Coconut Grove Ballroom in
Santa Cruz in the fall of 1980. Spectacular show. One of the top 10 I've
witnessed. I still have the towel Sloanov tossed out at the end of the
night.
I saw them a few years later with O'Connor and it seemed like he was
constantly challenging Steve Morse to a duel. All the chemistry was
dissipated with the competitiveness. The following year, the Dregs came
by to the Paradise in Boston with no fiddle player and were simply on
fire. They had no fiddle, no record deal, no business plan, no future
and played like there was no tomorrow. Easily as good as the first show
I saw.
A few years later I saw the band that was Paul Barrere with the Dregs
rhythm section and that smoked as well. I liked that better than the
Little Feat shows I saw a few years after that.
Mark is pretty talented though. I saw him with Bela Fleck and Edgar
Meyer and that was stunning.

Dont worry...when you're rich and suing Applebees
for porcupine droppings in the scramble egg buffet,
you'll forget ALL about this "Allie" and the Taxi days!
Trust me, Eddy.
that would be.
