What is the most unique album cover artwork of all time?
Is there any more album cover artwork out there any more? Well, when
there was it was pretty cool. There are / were so many different kinds.
Most of all of "Pink Floyd's" album covers were very unique. "Dark Side
of The Moon" & "Wish You Were Here" & "Animals" to name a few.
A band called "Nectar" had a good one on the album named "Remember the
Future". Remember that one?
That is the problem with CD's these daze, the cover is so freakin small
that there is no room for creativity for artwork.
"Led Zeppelin" had quite a few good ones. "Led Zeppelin III" was cool
and so was "Physical Graffiti". What was the one where the album had a
spinning dial on the cover that you could turn and make it look
different at you choosing?
The Grateful put out a couple of sweet ones. "Go to Heaven" was probably
was one of their weakest one out of the bunch. I like the "Without a
Net" cover.
The "Rolling Stone's" also had a couple of great artwork covers on their
albums.
That is something that I miss, is the great artwork that the bands came
out with. Oh those were the days.
I have not bought any recorded albums in the last 20 years that I am out
of touch with the artwork that is out there.

One of my housemates has Physical Graffiti on vinyl and it has the
spinny thing. It changes what you see in some of the windows of the
building on the cover. Wait, I swear he has III too, where the spinny
thing changes some of the weird random stuff on the cover. I could be
confused though. I know one of them for sure does what I said.

The spinny thing was from the Led Zep III; Physical Grafitti has the aprtment
building with die-cut windows that you can change the pictures with.
I've always thought the boxed set and Remaster boxes had nice artwork to
them.

Others in my collection: The Small Faces' "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake" has a
circular sleeve similar to a tobacco tin. And I don't think many bands
have come up with something like the 3-D cover to the Rolling Stones
"Their Satanic Majesty's Request." Heck, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin had
their friends at HipGnosis come up with some trippy images, but the Stones
have their own wing in the Interactive Cover Hall of Fame -- the zipper on
"Sticky Fingers," the beauty salon pics on "Some Girls," a toungue-shaped
vinyl single for "She Was Hot"...

My two favorites have always been
Strom Thorgerson (I'm almost certain I mispelled something there), a.k.a.
Hipgnosis did alot of pretty sharp photograpy for the albums by Pink Floyd,
Led Zeppelin and others. His illustrated work never really impressed me
much (Black Sabbath's Technical Ecstacy comes to mind), but the
photographic works are amazing.
Vaughan Oliver, who was half of the design collective 23 Envelope and later
V23, put out stunning covers for most of the bands that came out on 4AD
throughout the 80's and 90's, including the Cocteau Twins, The Pixies, and
This Mortal Coil. Definitely artsy.
This would make a good top ten list in this group.

Cal Schenkel's work for Frank Zappa/Mothers Of Invention is certainly unique.
"We're Only In It For The Money," "Uncle Meat" and "Burnt Weenie Sandwich"
comes to mind.
Neon Park also did a great cover for Zappa's "Weasles Ripped My Flesh" as well
as his wonderful LP covers for Little Feat. "Sailing Shoes" is a favorite.
The Beatles (aka "The White Album") and R. Crumb's Big Brother & The Holding
Co. "Cheap Thrills" are also high on my list.

70s?), When asked why he said no, he said (a touch miffed), "Let me put it
in a way for you to understand, What's more prestigious than doing a
Rolling Stones Album cover? How about *REFUSING* to do a Rolling Stones
Album cover.
It was twisted logic but brilliant, I always thought.

Finding "ugly rumors" on "Mars Hotel" when it first came out was an

Santana's early stuff was great also.
Roger Dean's work with Yes was always great too.
It may not qualify as a cover, but Big Bambu was certainly unique. The huge
rolling paper must be a big collectors item by now because I don't think I
knew anyone who resisted the temptation to roll it and spark it.

Very easy answer - Santana Lotus.
You have to see the vinyl packaging to appreciate. There are
three records; the album opens up with three page turns. Each
turn presents a unique "Santana-esque" image. Then, each sleeve had
a poster that openned up similarly. Amazing. Fully openned, it
covered my den floor.
This is also my favorite Santana album. They need to rerelease it
with *all* the tunes - Love Supreme, Creator Has A Master Plan, etc.
For all you vinyl freaks, this one is definitely a keeper.
Bitches Brew is also killer.
