I live in San Rafael, CA and the other day noticed that a new art
gallery had just opened on 4th Street, the main street of town.

What caught my eye was a big sign in the window; it said "Nature of
Mongolia." Since I actually went to Mongolia a couple of years ago, I
went in and started talking with the owners.

After a few minutes of animated talk, I realized that they had a sound
system, and I heard a very familiar voice singing a very familiar song. I
said something like: "I love David Nelson Band, but I've never heard a
version that sounds anything like that. Where'd you get it." Her answer
floored me: "I got it from my friend, David Nelson. We've been friends
ever since Jerry Garcia introduced us, about 20 years ago."

Well, well, well...

The owners of the gallery have been friends with various members of the
band since 1980, and they said that they published several of Jerry's
artworks. I wasn't sure exactly what that meant, unless they were talking
about posters, but, to make a long story shorter...

The Vinglo Gallery is having their "Gala Opening Party" on Friday, October
19th, at 7 PM. Bill Kreutzmann will be there with his art work (for
sale) and so will Wavy Gravy, who the owners told me has produced some
collages that will also be for sale.

They will also have art work by Jerry Garcia, Grace Slick, Rick Griffin,
Stanley Mouse, and Robert Crumb. Along with "special guests."

It's a pretty large space, and they told me that they have plans (although
indefinite at this time) to have music there and they figure it can hold
about 75 folding chairs. They told me they were going to ask their friend
David (Nelson) to play sometime.

And, this place is 5 minutes from my house!! Man oh man, I'm excited.

Here's the particulars:

Vinglo Gallery
1560 4th Street
San Rafael, CA
415-460-5353

San Rafael is about 10 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. When coming
from either north or south, exit 101 at the "Central San Rafael" exit.
Make the 2nd left, onto 4th street, and it's about a mile down from the
freeway. It's right past "United Liquors" (as a landmark).

They do plan to set up a web site, so I'll let you know the URL when they
do.

The owners are really friendly people, and after they told me their plans,
I just hope that they are successful. As it is, the store has had a
succession of businesses, all of which folded. So, if you have any
interest in Dead-related art work, mark your calendar for 10/19/01 and
come visit beautiful San Rafael.

Ack. That's the directions if going north.

If going south on 101, get off at Central San Rafael, and make a right on
4th street.
