The New York Times Nov 3 (Saturday) 2012 had Larry's
obituary. He started the Wetlands in NYC in about 1989.
Before that does anyone remember (I think it was called)
Club Dead? It was only 1 night a week at some interesting
(non-bar) spaces such as Shea's Dance Studio. But I digress.
The point being that I never thought a 7 night a week place
would last. But last it did for about 10 years. Larry
sold it to some young kid in about '95 who is now the big
promoter man at Brooklyn Bowl and Portchester NY (peter shapiro).
Anyway they talked about the Wetlands being instrumental (no pun
intended) in Phish and Blues Traveler's respective careers
(Spin Doctors too). Also the environmental/activist bent of
the place.

I loved playing there! Cheryl Liguri, the manager back then, later moved
to Boulder and now works at the Boulder Theater/Fox Theater
conglomerate. It's nice to have that sense of continuity.

However, the first time I played there, I walked in the door and was
faced with a huge poster warning me of The Attack of the Killer Hurwitz!
It was the first time I'd heard of Charles Hurwitz, who is definitely an
eco-thug and an abuser of our country and government of the first rank.
Junk bond washout turned clear-cutter based on our bailout of his
sketchy financial misdeeds.

Thanks, Larry, for the great times and the always educational experience!

Hm, the name doesn't sound familiar, but that doesn't mean I didn't. It
was quite a while ago!

It was a great place. As long as you didn't sit on that couch; I
think they gave out tetanus shots if you did...

I'll bet you did...full disclosure here...Edjuans old band
were the 1st act required to pay a fee to perform in NYC....
commonly known as "Pay to Play"....1/2 hour $300 from
the groups meager budget....it's not known exactly how much
they were bilked.....the lads did a month long residency at the
club in April 1998....some estimates would put the fee to the
booker in the 6 digit figure...plus the bands copious bar tab.
No wonder some members went back to school/day jobs...
they still owe the club owner for gigs dating back to 2005.
It's a shambles!
