wondering exactly who would be the best opening band for the next tour.
The best opening band would be, and could only be, the Grateful Dead.
That was the way it was for years and years and years.

My *dream* opening band would be Bob Marley and the Wailers (hey, the boys
could open for Bob Marley--that'd be cool too). But since we all know that
my dream will not come true (at least not on this plane of existence), then
how 'bout the Radiators or Hot House Flowers (have they ever opened for the
Dead?)--uh....no pun intended.
Jilly
The Meters kick such ass, and everyone in New Orleans loves them. It would be a damn shame if they didn't get up there with Jerry, Bobby and Co. and jam to
Mardi Gras Mambo.

Actually, that's not too far from true. One of _my_ fantasy openers, Bob
Marley and the Wailers, was almost for real, in March 1981 at U. of
Maryland (aka "Terrapin Station"). When I bought the tickets in early
February, Bob and his pals were listed as the "special guests".
Obviously, this gig had been booked before the extent of Marley's cancer
was discovered, Marley was hospitalized and, of course, died shortly after.
Marley had only been gone a short while when the Cole Field House show
was played, without him or the Wailers. Shame; what a show that would've
been. Bob, I-mon miss you; happy birt'day mon', whereever you are.
Seriously, though, I just got back from a week and a half in Negril, JA,
where I saw Third World play a knock-down drag-out show at the Central
Park ampitheatre there, about ten minutes from our hotel. It was a
kickoff show for their new album, and they really burned the place down.
Since Marley's left us, I'd take Third World, Steel Pulse or Ziggy Marley
and the Melody Makers for the opener.

The reggae band I'd like to see with the Dead would be Steel Pulse. They
are incredible. However, the setting would have to be just right for
this show. I'm thinking the Matel Community Center near Garberville
(Electric on the Eel). Beautiful, sunny, good vibes everywhere! When do
tickets go on sale?
Matt
BTW, I just have to say that Phish would kick ass too. I think the Dead
would have to open for them though. :) Unless you're talkin pre-'90 Dead.
I really don't know if it would be a good idea to have any of these bands
opening for the Dead. All three of them play with such a high amount of
energy that everybody in the crowd could be too tired to dance by the time
the Dead play. I guess the only way to find out is to see it happen.
Not to mention the inevitable sitin by members of the opening band, just
think, Art or George or a Horn section..........
The horns really add a further dimension........while we are at it how about Rebirth Brass Band?

i saw him open for Porno for Pyros and for various other hard rock shows,
(he used to be a sure bet to open for anything in the Austin area)
and though i admire his work,
opening for the dead???
Miles did in fact open for the GD in the '70s at one point, for two shows.
Jerry says that the GD were embarrassed to come on stage after he played. I
think he had his Bitches Brew gang with him, an amazing group of folks!

They'er not bad without him, too bad he can't make amends and The Band
get back together.
As for dream opening acts: I'd take the Talking Heads, Santana, the
Allman Bros. with Duane, the Who, Eric Clapton.

By the way, the 'tones are scheduled for Saturday Night Live on
April 15. If you've never seen them (or even if you have), then
by all means tune in!! They are a unique group, super talented,
making magic with electric banjo, bass, and electronic drums.
- Tim Miller
Huntsville, AL (on the way to Birmingham, April 4)
Tim is on to something here. I saw these guys in Lisner Aud.
on GWU in DC. I'd love to only see them open for the dead, but I'd
love to see Bela play with the Dead. I don't remember the bass players
name, but my God what a talent. Also, I'd love to see "space age man"
or "future man" whatever the drummer calls himself, add his magic
to drums. Now that would be a show.

Now some of you might critisize a contemporary band, in favour of a
more traditional one, as old as the GD. But think about, opening bands
are about discovering new talent, and I can think of no other band
today, which has the potential of the Black Crowes. Their last album
wasn't as good as their first two, but I envision a long and rewarding
career for them. Have you seen what older musicians like Joe Cocker
look like? Pity city! Most of the bands that grew up with the GD are
washed up and are best remembered in their original state.

I'd like to suggest Neil Young and Crazy Horse or perhaps, Santana.
Mmh. Coming to think of it, THEM wouldn't be so bad. But THEY, of course, are
unfortunatately no longer with US.
Who was it that said *Cleaning Windows* was a song to be covered by the Dead?
Don't let me catch THEM.

Neil or Santana would be great, (Santana would be a hot opener), but I'd like
to see Van Morrison or the Pat Metheny Band.
